JJ J.

deceptively benign name for an explosively delicious menu disguised in a typical looking place. nothing stood out for me and i'd not only never heard of it but never wanted to try. until i literally walked in here, luckily, out of curiosity; a hidden gem indeed. ironic bc the adapted style is very peruvian by its description: 'hybrid peruvian-mexican'. peruvian is a hyper-hybrid-mixed bag of various culinary greats like china, japan, spain, african & incan and has the geographic diversity to pull it off as they have virtually any ingredient available. so i was excited to see their menu, but... had plenty of trouble with their menu since their website link on google was bad and no menu on yelp, but i fixed that with posted pics once i was finally i was able to see their menu inside!! there's some 3rd party menu online but i don't trust those bc they're often wrong or from another location so i always look for an authentic pic taken from customers of an in-store menu. for example, they didn't even have alfajores here even tho it says they do on that 3rd party site. but anyways i was immediately sold on chilaquiles. yes very mexican but again hybrid peruvian had me wondering about the green sauce as peru is known for their chile sauces smothering things. things such as their amazing peruvian rotisserie chicken. so tender, juicy, crispy crust. perfect with the cut up corn tortillas & then there was plenty of queso fresco cheese and that subtle pungent spice of red onion to finish it off, all in that fabulous green sauce that wasn't very spicy. reminiscent of ceviche actually, the national dish, only mexican version minus the fish! yet also kind of breakfast-like too. indeed hybrid. the taquitos were very tasty too, as you can see (and imagine) in my pic. i should've had tostones too but their menu says green plantain & sweet plantain, not tostones like the word i'm familiar with, so i assumed it wasn't tostones, but i checked on the way out with an employee and confirmed the green plantains are in fact tostones. so...got the menu frustrations sorted, very impressed with the food, obviously will be back soon!!

For many years, I have passed this restaurant. The server told me it had been there for 12 years,…read morewhich seems actually shorter than my recollection, but I won't argue the point. Why it took me so long to get here however is a mystery to me because it's a lovely restaurant. I don't mean by that the ambience it's actually rather plain however the service and the food is absolutely spectacular. I'm by no means an expert in Peruvian food however the patrons were buying for Peruvian hence I'm going to take their presence as a statement about authenticity of the food and a 12 year history. They don't sell alcohol so all of their profits are from dishes, which are absolutely spectacular. We had something a kin to an empanada, which was made with beef deep fried, but the crust was very white and very flavorful. The server gave me a side dip which added some spice to the meal however, before putting it on, I ate some without the dip and it was very flavorful. Potatoes, rice and beans are a large part of Peruvian cuisine all of which I tasted here all of which were very, very good. We got basically a sampler tray which included ceviche beef, chicken, and a potato bean combination, which was just wonderful. The waiter was kind enough to point it out to us and I'm glad he did because it was a great overview of what Peruvian food is. Since I'm not familiar with the cuisine rather than spend a great deal of time addressing it what I'm going to tell you is, it is a wonderful restaurant, the service is equally wonderful, BYOB and enjoy yourself. I will not let so much time go again before I revisit this fine Restaurant. It was a pleasure.

This time I called in an order for tallarines saltados and two whole chickens for my family. They told me it would be ready in an hour, which was fine. When I arrived to pick it up, the owner handed me the food and casually said he replaced my tallarines with lomo saltado -- without asking me first. He said it was "a better choice" and that they were out of tallarines. I told him clearly that I did not want lomo saltado, but he kept insisting, so I just took it to avoid arguing. When we got home, the real problem started -- both chickens were undercooked, tough, and hard to chew. It was so bad that I told my kids and family not to eat any of it, and I ended up throwing everything in the trash. I paid good money for this meal, and we didn't get to eat at all. Changing an order without consent and serving raw chicken is not acceptable. I won't be coming back.

The service and communication could definitely be improved; asking basic questions about the menu or looking for guidance felt a bit uncomfortable, as if it was an inconvenience to the staff. During my most recent visit, I was even told my order was "weird," which threw me off. They were also out of sauce, which made a noticeable difference because the rice was pretty dry and really needed that added flavor. Without it, the dish tasted a bit like leftovers. The chicken was cooked well and smelled great, but the flavor didn't quite match the aroma. I really wanted to like this place, and I gave it multiple tries, but the overall experience just hasn't been what I hoped for.

The exterior looks nice and clean and I love the patio deck where you can sit and eat. The place has only been open for 8 month. The lady taking our order was very nice and service is good. The food took a little while but that's because they make it fresh to order. The food came out hot. Now on to the food review The lomo saltado - portion is on par with pricing. I wish they gave a bit more rice as it wasn't enough. The sauce that came with the meat is a tad too salty for my taste. They gave a good amount of meat and they were very tender. The flavor is decent but didn't have the oompf that made me go wow. Nonetheless it wasn't bad. Pan con chicharron - the sandwich was bigger than I thought. They gave plenty of meat which was great! However my bf prefer it to be served on sourdough bread. The sweet potatoes were fries instead of fresh slices of fried sweet potatoes. The sandwich needed a bit more onion. The rocoto sauce and aji amarillo sauce were good but it wasn't spicy at all. I personally liked my bf sandwich and the lime taste. Mango drink - for $3 this was amazing! Taste fresh and not artificial. Very refreshing. Overall the food was decent coming from a shack. The pricing is food truck pricing and not a bad deal. However my bf is from Peru and think the food is mediocre and didn't satisfy his craving.

I was starving, looking for food, hot as hell out, it's the Covid era, everything sucks right now (exaggerating but y'all know what I'm talking about) as far as food quality goes except this place I'm telling you if you read this review especially elite yelp members, y'all have got to pop in here and check this place out in Katy. Met the owners, hearts and minds are in this food I assure you it's ridiculously obvious when you try it and that's not any exaggeration check it out, unbelievable. I was in Katy working again today and popped back in to try something new, which didn't disappoint. I had a chicken sandwich the first time and beef tenderloin this time. Very impressive. When someone loves there job you can tell, and that's what this is, everyone knows how hard that is to get in a bigger restaurant.

I believe the chef also cooks for the Peruvian embassy here sometimes in Houston. The inside of their restaurant is decorated in a very intimate way with cultural aspects from the two countries. You already know I HAD to get ceviche when coming to a Peruvian restaurant. I got the ceviche chalaco, which includes mahi-mahi, octopus, shrimp, racoto-aji leche de Tigre, choclo, sweet potato puree, cancha, topped with fried cuttlefish. It has a nice citrus flavor and the leche de Tigre base is soo good. I actually really liked the mahi-mahi, and the fried cuttlefish was fried to perfection with the fish inside still being soft and delicious. That sweet potato puree really elevates the dish as well, it helps counter the citrus flavor but adds another dimension of flavor. My friend got the lomo saltado and it was so so good. The beef was so tender and easy to chew. The soy-oyster sauce they use makes this dish soooo so good. I love the steak fries drenched with the sauce too. I got the arroz con Mariscos. I remember they used to put squid ink in the rice back then. They infuse the rice with aji Amarillo (green pepper sauce?) and top it with shrimp, clams, mussels, octopus, cod, and sarza criolla (vinegar onions). It's basically a seafood paella. This was actually pretty mild in flavor compared to the lomo saltado. The rice was good and almost creamy like but I don't think I was a fan of the corn/bean like pieces in the rice? The seafood itself was good as well, especially the shrimp. If you come here you need to for sure get the ceviche and lomo saltado. They also have sushi rolls that you can order as well, they seem like very unique ones too
