I visited this location [Rio] on 8/12, and alerted the man helping me of my point balance. In summary, he couldn't figure out how to access my point balance, or I guess he just didn't want to, because after contacting another DC location, not only did they locate my point balance, they also sent me a $20 giftcard as an apology for the horrid service I received. What did the guy at Rio do? Called me by name like he knew me, waved his hand in my face, and told me to calm down. Oh, not to be forgotten, he offered me a "no protein" discount, which was less than $1 off what the price would have been. Wow. My company has an office in the Washingtonian area that I've been to many times over the last few years, but the last time I'd been, Poki DC hadn't arrived yet. There was a short line ahead of me when I arrived, but the few employees working there got through them pretty efficiently. The protein and topping offerings are pretty much what you'll find at any poké restaurant, but I was really pleased with how much you could get without being upcharged (e.g. crabmeat salad would cost extra at my favorite poké place in Tyson's, but was free here). I got a comical amount of toppings on my bowl; it was almost difficult to eat. The fish tasted fresh and the flavors were great. The employee who served me was super friendly. Upon checking in I had the option of getting a free miso soup or mochi ice cream; I opted for the latter. These were individually wrapped in the self-serve freezer up front. This is the most basic poke place I have been to. They have all the ingredients but the flavors are not all there. I didn't really taste the fish marinade. The dressings/ topping sauces didn't really have flavors that stood out to me. Also, the other topping options weren't as creative as many other places that I've tried. I decided to try it at a different location to give the brand another shot and felt the same way. However, the service was pretty good at both places. The employee were younger adults/ teen who actually cared about their jobs. Although I was uninterested and probably wouldn't go back. I don't know of any poke places around this area, so it's nice to have one here in Gaithersburg. They have a diverse selection of toppings as well as base for the bowl ranging from white rice base, brown rice/quinoa and even zucchini noodles. The fish and protein options are SO fresh and the restaurant itself is always kept incredibly clean which is important if you're serving seafood. The portion is large so I have enough food for later snacking. I just wish that there were descriptions of the sauces since there are so many of them, I wasn't sure which to choose. The staff was very patient and informative to this first timer. You can build on a base of sushi rice, brown rice with quinoa (my choice), zucchini spirals, or greens, or half and half. The theme of healthful and something for everyone follows through the whole selection of ingredients. Next, a protein: fish, marinated or not, chicken, or tofu. Then as many of a dozen toppings as you like. I chose straight tuna and a $1 upgrade to yellow tail. I went with the Asian toppings and passed on the fruits. Last, a sauce. I followed the Asian theme with ponzu. After paying, help yourself to crispy sprinkles including paper thin bonito shavings, and green rice tea. I always get the salmon, ahi tuna and spicy tuna but the other day I swapped my spicy tuna and splurged the extra $1 for the yellowtail and I must say I will be splurging from here on out. You choose your base of sushi rice, brown rice with quinoa, mixed greens, and zucchini noodles. Next, you pick your protein (2 scoops is standard, 3 is more $). They have a variety of marinated and unmarinated ahi tuna, salmon, yellowtail, chicken, shrimp, squid salad, and tofu as a vegetarian option. Next, you get to add your toppings which include a variety of vegetables and fruit. I highly recommend the crabmeat salad and the masago (fish egg)! They have 10 different sauces, but I chose the honey wasabi and Sriracha mayo. There's a self serve crunchy topping station which has seaweed, fish flakes, rice puffs, onion crisps, sesame seeds, and garlic crisps. Seating is pretty limited inside. There's 7 chairs for seating at the bar and 4 regular tables. It wouldn't be an issue if grabbing it to go and eating it at home or somewhere else outside like on a bench, but might be difficult for larger groups. They have a water dispenser if you don't want to buy a beverage, but there are a variety of drinks (Japanese soda ramune, canned green tea. Soda, etc.). A bowl for me ended up being around 14 to 15 dollars, which is getting close to 1.5 Chipotle burritos, but it did not fill me up to the point of even 1 burrito. I had poke here and there and never really found it to be groundbreaking, but I do like sushi and sashimi so this step was not a bother to me. I got a bowl with half rice half zoodles (Zuchinni noodles for the uninitiated) and with spicy tuna and marinaded salmon. The rest of the toppings? Uh about 10 other things. A bit of green onions, a bit of seaweed salad, some pickled radishes.. etc. And topped off with the spicy mayo and a drizzle of eel sauce. For the self serve station, I went with some dried nori strips, fried onions and crisp fried garlic bits. All in all a very satisfying lunch, with more than ample portions for a dinner.
