They have incredibly fresh sushi. We tried the truffle roll per recommendation here. It was such a delight with the crispy topping. I would order this again. I like that the spicy tuna rolls don't have ground tuna (like other places) but rather small pieces mixed with the spicy sauce. It lent itself to a more buttery taste in my opinion. Also tried the rainbow roll and the other rolls that came with the Spicy box set. The rolls were smaller than I was expecting so I'm glad we ordered an extra salmon roll. One note - the acoustics of the room are not great for a large Friday night crowd. It was so loud that my ears started to hurt and I could not hear the conversation with my guest. Quaint no frills neighborhood spot offering well executed fare with fresh ingredients. This spot does qualify as a hidden gem as it is tucked away on a quiet upper east side block. It is often full of UES locals and almost seems to lean into this role as a staple for return customers - it is BYOB, cash only, and even has hidden menu items. The staff are especially friendly with return customers and I even get the sense they try and pair you with the same waiter when possible. All of the standard rolls and pieces are excellent and consistently good. This is the UES answer to UWS's Sushi Yasaka. You MUST order 1 of each of the tuna bomb and salmon bomb (not listed on the menu) which are basically spicy crab with tempura crunch wrapped in a thin layer of the respective fish. The flavor and texture are unreal. Another MUST order is the mexican roll (not overkill on the truffle) and the agedashi tofu (incredibly crisp). The tuna bomb roll is amazing but relatively expensive and redundant if you order the off-the-menu appetizer. I will also warn you that the oysters on the menu are an illusion as they are never in stock! I am surprised by some of the negative reviews here but I think this place is more suited to locals who know what to expect. We love this place and have been coming here for the last 5 years. The menu is exquisite and from the apps to the rolls, there is always something to please all guests. We love their yellow fin tartare, gyoza (always cooked perfectly with one cripsy side and a well balanced dipping sauce), tuna bomb (Yum!), Tuna Tataki with peppercorns and of course the rolls and sushi pieces (ikura is a must). Their fish is always fresh, buttery and has been consistently good. This place is the best around this area. The rolls are perfectly balanced between rice, fish and veggies. These are not chunky rice rolls where you get mostly rice - these rolls are all about umami, quality over quantity and the price is fair. Also BYOB, why hello! TLDR: Great quality but small portion sushi, and CASH ONLY I'm really glad I stumbled upon this sushi spot in the UES. The menu has a good variety of apps, hand or simple rolls, and specialty rolls. I came super hungry and order 5 rolls (3 specialty and 2 simple) between 2 people. The food was amazing. But honestly, I could have eaten a lot more. Here's what we got: - Yellow Tail Scallion: This was fine, no strong flavor. Wouldn't order again - Toro Scallion: I'm a big fan of Toro and this was super soft and tasty - Manhattan: This was my least favorite roll. It's half salmon topped and half tuna topped, but I didn't think there was any special flavor - Spicy Spider: Super tasty with the tempura crab - Truffle: The waiter recommend we try this if we haven't before. The truffle flavor was super subtle but it was definitely tasty I really liked the food here and would be happy to come back. The only catch is the portions are super small, so while the prices per roll are reasonable, you end up having to order more than you would other places so the prices aren't as reasonable as they seem off the bat. There is seating available both inside and outside. Last thing to note that knocked this experience 1-star: my group was super disappointed that the staff did not inform us until the bill came that it was cash only. It is pretty rare for a white table cloth sit-down place in NYC doesn't take card, and in those cases, I have always been proactively warned when sitting. Honestly i forget which ones we tried, but best piece was the toro or fatty tuna. Yeahhhh. Their special rolls arent that big but they do pack a flavor punch. We got the truffle roll and the spicy spider. The truffle roll was recommended by the waiter as being the most popular one. You can taste a very very subtle hint of truffle oil when the piece first touches your tongue, but then it instantly goes away as you chew. The spicy spider wasn't that spicy but the fried crab was yummy. Overall, i liked this place for an UES local sushi restaurant. I wasn't wow'd, but I wasn't disappointed. The service was nice. I ended up ordering a third sushi dish and a side of rice after the my first two sushi dishes, a salad and a appetizer left me still hungry. I am a pretty small person who really never eats very much and most places hardly finishes a meal so for me to leave hungry after ordering a second round of food was just ridiculous. In concept the prices seem pretty fair based on comparable places but when you factor in how many dishes you have to order to feel even remotely full this place carries a large price tag. (Way more than two obey signs!!) I ordered the seaweed salad which is $5.50 and was blown away what they served me (see photo). I considered sending it back it was such a joke but I really hate to do that at a restaurant and waste food. The fish quality is really low! The fish on my salmon sushi was very warm and tasted as if it had been sitting out for a while. The yellow tail that I got was just the same, had no flavor and was mushy. The restaurant was more than half empty when I walked in around 5:30 and was about the same when I left. But I was rushed from the moment I sat down. Three different people tried to take my order when I had already and I needed more time to a fourth. Save your sushi cravings and cash for Sashimi Ramen Express on 78th. We haven't had sushi this good in a long time! It was easy to orderby phone and pay with cash on delivery. My partner loves sushi but I am one who can't stand fishy fish. No cork fee for our 1 bottle of wine :) The sushi was on the smaller side but still very tasty and affordable (you may just have to order a couple appetizers and/or multiple specialty rolls). Golden 8 pieces) was good, it had fresh tasting salmon on the outside with a spicy mayo drizzle and the inside was a crab mix. Even better was the Volcano roll (6 pieces) with fried calamari on the inside! It was perfectly chewy and large pieces! The California hand roll was basic but still good. The shumai (like a mini version of a dumpling) was really good too, I'm not sure if it was shrimp filling or another seafood but it was very mild tasting and delicious.
