It's not very often that I am intrigued by something but the new self-heating bowl from Poke Bar had me curious. Grayson and I have been to our share of poke spots but have yet to try out Poke Bar. We visited the location along Lonsdale in North Vancouver. The restaurant was brightly lit when we entered and we were greeted by the friendly staff. Poke Bar offers your typical poke bowl options and toppings. What intrigued me was that they expanded to serving ramen too. All the poke toppings were nicely refrigerated and neatly placed by the food prep station. I like that they had scoops for each of the bins so that they had the same portion for each bowl. The two of us tried the aloha ramen because it was made in their self heating bowl. The bowl came in a plastic container and our server added cold water to the spout of the bowl. Within a few seconds, our bowl started steaming! It was like magic.We had to wait 7-8 minutes until our ramen was ready to eat and wow were we surprised by what hid beneath the lid. There were 2 pieces of grilled pork belly, half an egg, corn, bean sprouts, green onions, and garlic chips. This ramen bowl was advertised as a tonkotsu ramen but it did not taste that way at all. The broth reminded me of the chicken soup from instant cup ramen. It was also very salty and made the ramen almost inedible for us.The ramen noodles were not your traditional chewy ramen noodle. They were on the softer side and resembled Chinese oil noodles. Perhaps they were al dente when they were put into the bowl but after the re-heating, they became a little softer than I would have liked. After the meal, I was curious to see what made the bowl self-heat. Turns out it is this little pack. I'm guessing it's a water activated hot pack that heats up when in contact with water. This then causes the water to boil and create steam to heat up your bowl of ramen. This was definitely a gimmicky experience and I would love to see this self-heating bowl at other spots because it kept our noodles nice and hot. Unfortunately, we weren't fans of the ramen it self and won't be back for ramen. read more

This newly opened poke shop is located in a very central location. It is very transit friendly, and lots of parking spots available! Their portions are smaller than other poke shops I've been to, and selection of sauces is aright. The overall experience and taste was okay - 3.5/5. Maybe they were super overwhelmed and swamped by the promotion they were doing (first 300 customers get a free bowl). I will be back to try their poke bowls again when it's not so busy! read more

I'm so happy. This will be the start of something new. My first poke bowl and I loved it. I had salmon with brown rice, avocado and fresh greens and it was delicious. My first poke bowl was sooo good. Really enjoyed it and will definitely return. It's a great location central Lonsdale. The staff were great. Only a couple downfalls however - there's very little seating so I had to get my lunch to go, and although their recycling set up is great they throw out a lot of waste with every meal and meal preparation. I would suggest having dish ware for patrons who dine in and use bowls when mixing and preparing the orders. read more

Generous servings and pretty yummy flavours for meat eaters. Lame for veggies as plain tofu is the only option - they don't even have a marinated tofu! But my main complaint is how much waste they produce - they don't have bowls for eating in so they serve up the rice and salad in a single use bowl. Then, when they mix up the veggies and sauce they use ANOTHER single use bowl and just toss it out after using it for 30 seconds. They also only have single use cups for water when eating in. Most of the poke places I've been to are in downtown, but I'm happy to have found one in North Van. Very clean atmosphere, not too many seats available but I managed to grab one of the bar stools. I chose the small size which is the usual poke bowl size (one scoop rice, two scoops protein). I got brown rice, spicy tuna and salmon, cucumber, jalapeños, edamame, masago, crabmeat, seaweed salad, some furikake (rice seasoning),and ponzu sauce. I liked how you could get as many add ons you wanted with no extra charge (except for avocado). Small size looks small but is very filling. The salmon was fresh and so was the tuna. I would've added more sauce to mine (you can mix sauces) because it was a little dry. They also use compostable bowls and cutlery which is a huge bonus. Service is also very friendly and quick. Definitely will come back for some more poke bowls! read more

Finally a poke bar has arrived in North Vancouver. This place is a chain based out of Southern California. By Grand Opening time they had everything running very smoothly. Loads of different poke proteins to choose from and tons of toppings and sauces to customize your order. Everything was tasty and most importantly super fresh. read more

Love the toppings and sauces, and the quality of all of the ingredients really makes me excited to come back. I love poke at most places but the portions here are stingy despite the market prices. I asked if I could get half salad and half noodles or rice. They said yes and they'll give you a full portion of the carbs sprinkled with four pieces of lettuce. What a rip off! read more

I just went here today and the food is delicious! Everything tasted fresh and the portion was pretty big. I've had other poke dishes before but this was the first time I was actually felt full after eating. I almost couldn't finish it! Been to many poke restaurants across vancouver but this is the first one in north van and I couldn't think of one thing to detract away from the experience for this picky customer. I got the small size with tuna and salmon and left feeling full but not like I had uncomfortably over eaten. Some thoughts I had about my visit: - Loved how accommodating the staff was about letting me try mixing sauces and rice instead of just choosing one type. - The server was very good at sweetly directing me to the next step/choice as there can be an overwhelming number of things to look at. - The $1 upgrade to a combo with drink or miso soup is a good deal. - The staff is also conscious of double checking things like cilantro, onions and jalapeño which people either love or hate. - Love how all their dishes, cups and cutlery are biodegradable. - Front of house was kept wonderfully clean. I feel safe eating raw food here unlike some other sushi restaurants on central Lonsdale. - They have signature bowl options for those who prefer having decisions made for them but there's nothing in them that you can't get in a regular bowl. - A sandwich board outside would increase visibility of this new joint on Lonsdale. read more
