Hands down the best service in town--and maybe anywhere!…read more I've been taking my vehicles to the Les Schwab in Brookings, for as long as I can remember. This shop has always represented the best of a down-home, family-run business: honest, reliable, and truly committed to taking care of their customers. Most recently, I brought in my 10-year-old F250, which has been struggling a bit after I added a cab-over slide-in camper. I needed airbags installed, and from the moment I walked in, Cody went above and beyond to help me out. He had an appointment available for Friday, but when I told him I had to leave town, he made my truck a priority--even though he didn't have to. I dropped it off the night before, and Cody kept me updated every step of the way. He called to confirm when the parts arrived, updated me about a complication with my gooseneck hitch, and let me know that my rear shocks were completely blown. Even though this added a lot of extra work, the team still finished everything the same day so I could safely hit the road. A huge shoutout to Todd, who did the heavy lifting and worked so hard to make it happen. The whole crew was friendly, professional, and just plain kind. Cody's communication, friendliness, and dedication to real customer service is something you don't see every day--and it deserves to be recognized. This is an amazing team, and I'm so grateful for them!

The vehicle had lost compression on three of four cylinders, with the fourth apparently only at 30%. It needed serious work, but at 300K miles, that wasn't a big surprise despite us being very diligent in keeping her maintained. The owner refused to discuss options for us, implying that we were fools for even thinking of having her fixed ("the cost far outweighs the vehicle's value" was his exact quote), and then refused to give us service. We had towed her to this "great place" at the cost of almost $400 for nothing. He didn't suggest another mechanic or garage; he didn't provide any more information than that I listed above about her compression; and his attitude was condescending and grumpy. It was clear we were wasting his precious time. He implied that, because of the age of the vehicle--30 years--that finding parts were going to be next to impossible. It was the scrap heap for our car, that's it, now get it off of my lot. We went home and called a familiar mechanic in Brookings, who located the needed parts within a day, then provided us a detailed quote via email (PDF) on repair costs and time needed to get the job done. That mechanic didn't judge us for wanting to repair our vehicle instead of throwing her away; he treated us with respect and consideration. Today we had her towed all the way down there for an additional ungodly sum. There are some of us who refuse to engage with consumer culture, buy the latest, when it breaks toss it away, always upgrade, spend, spend, spend, go in debt, and destroy the world in the process. Some of us don't believe in planned obsolescence, and fight it daily whenever and however we can. South Coast Tire and Auto ... clean business? Sure. Good rep? Given. Willing to help? Not so much. Willing to list options? Nope. Judgy? You bet. Though we live in Port Orford, and they are much closer to Brookings, we'll have our girl serviced in Brookings. They actually care.
