I can't recommend this shop enough. Another place happily took over $500 from me and STILL didn't fix the issue. I brought my car here expecting another hit to my wallet, but the mechanic took one look, fixed it in five minutes, and wouldn't even take a dime. Who does that anymore? The owner said that my jury would be there as soon as I was ready to pay. I told him I was moving out of the town and as soon as I moved, he went and sold my jewelry not to mention every time I brought my car to fix my air conditioner the guy who was fixing it broke it a little more each time until it couldn't be fixed. This place is so unhelpful and unprofessional. We dropped our car off here on the weekend and left the key in their insecure drop box. The next day we tried calling and no answer. After that we tried again - no answer. Finally we get someone to answer the phone and the guy is brisk and annoyed. "What do want us to do with it?" He asked impatiently. My husband explained to him the issues and the guy said they'd look into it. Well time passes and we hear nothing about the car so my husband calls again. The SAME GUY answers the phone and says, "Oh yeah that car? No one has a clue why that's here". My husband then frustratingly explains again why the car is there and that he's called before and explained. Guy doesn't apologize at all - just says "oh". Later they call us back and explain they need to replace the breaks (which my husband okays after he gets the quote) and mentions something else that needs to be updated but doesn't give the quote. My husband, it's important to note, only okay'd the break update. When we go to pick up the car - surprise surprise - they went ahead and did the other job without telling us. Added on an extra $100 to our costs which we weren't planning on. Needles to say we were frustrated. These guys SUCK at communicating. They are rude, unprofessional and have an obvious dislike for customers. It's stores like this that make me marvel how on earth they ever stay in business. Also, change your Yelp picture. Yup... as good as it gets. Here I am in Oregon for the past 5 weeks and I start having trouble with my car. This isn't a big town and when you are stuck in Brookings you are really stuck in Brookings. I asked around and everyone said I need to see Tony at Proficient Auto Repair. Well, I don't think I have ever had an auto repair go so smoothly. Auto repairs to me are the as having an "out of body expedience". I tremble when I think of having to talk to a car guy. Tony was great. Even though he has a shop he came to house twice to fix a problem that was so simple yet so complicated in that finding exactly what the issue was that kept draining my battery. I feel if you live in the area or are even just passing though and find you have an car issue Tony will treat you fair and honestly. read more

They had my car for weeks when it should have been a few days. When I finally got the car back it had some minor issues it did not have previously. There was also some missing parts like screws to my headlights. Apparently, Tony the owner is a great mechanic if you are fortunate enought to get him to work on your car and not the rift raft that he hires. Tony is also very rude and arrogant. read more

We were on vacation from the Bay area camping at the mouth of the Smith River in California. We own a 1996 Ford PU with a 7.5l gas engine. We pull a fifth wheel trailer and need all the power the vehicle can give us. The truck had the spark plugs replaced just prior to our trip. The truck operated normally on the drive up but the next day it appeared to start to miss badly on one cylinder. We took the truck to Proficient Auto and Tony asked us to bring it back in the afternoon. He kept the truck until the following morning and then called us to report that it had been repaired. He said that they had found a torn spark plug boot on the number two cylinder that caused the misfire. Thank you Proficient Auto you saved our vacation. read more

i have used this business 3 times in the last year. They are always professional and often do minor work without charge, The work is excellent and at a good price. I am not certain about the problems others say they have but they are always professional. I plan on being a long term customer. Some other reviews must have axes to grind. read more

I stopped in to schedule an oil change. They got me right in. I watched the tech change the oil. He was very thorough. He cleaned all of the areas he worked with and he inspected everything. The price was more than reasonable. I'd highly recommend this shop. read more

I live here. My truck was running rough and it was time for an oil change and tune up. This place looked like a "real" shop, not someplace that just wants to shuttle as many cars through as possible. They did a great job and took time to figure out why it wasn't running right after changing the spark plugs and doing the timing. I'd asked for synthetic oil and they forgot and put in regular oil, but didn't charge me when they realized their mistake. Also, it took them 2 hours to get to my car and I was waiting the whole time at the shop...but, most people probably don't sit and wait. They will drive you any place in town when you leave your car off, but I needed to go too far to ask them to do that! Really nice people and the best place in town, for sure! read more

Tony and the guys here are wonderful. They charged me nothing, nadda, to check a "code" for me when Coast Auto Jeep was going to charge me $50 to run that code. And my car is even a Jeep. If they can't fix a problem or find it without having to tear your car apart they don't charge anything. I trust them, they are honest and hard working. Tony even drove me home and picked me up there to retrieve my car. Cannot say enough good things about this business. read more

Thank you Tony & the Proficient Auto Repair crew. Arrived, in Brookings on a Friday afternoon with a car overheating and a Eulogy to give on Saturday 350 miles away in Santa Rosa CA. They diagnosed the problem, "invented" a repair, as the parts were not available in town and got me back on the road in a matter of hours. Without thoughtful innovation, where most places, would have said, you'll have to wait till the part comes in, . . . They understood my urgency in delivering a eulogy for my dear friend (with hundreds attending), decorated veteran the next day. They cared! They made it work, for a nominal, reasonable price and had me on the road in a couple of hours, . . . Saved the day. It made a big difference in the lives of many, as we remembered a great man. I had to take my truck in for a recall to Grants Pass and the dealership told me I needed a $1500 repair (replacing the timing chain cover gasket said to be leaking) that I got a second opinion on from this repair shop. I brought it to them and they quickly said the repair was not necessary, that what was needed was another problem that was just $265 to repair (leaking valve covers, and not the timing chain cover. They fit me in the next day by appointment and got the job done in quick time, so I scheduled another maintenance order on a few other things needing addressing (replacing disc rotors, fan motor issues and back lights in dash board). From now on, they are my go to auto repair facility. They are friendly and proficient. No concerns at all. Highly recommended over a dealership, especially the one that wanted to charge me for unnecessary work. I am a former mechanic with heart issues, so I need a reliable one to take my place...they got the job! read more
