We stopped here on a whim while in the general area two weeks ago. Quaint little place with a very friendly, knowledge woman pouring "fair" glasses of sample wines. Overall, I was not overly impressed but it was better than I expected for the area / climate. My favorite was the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon. It was rich and full bodied, not fruity. It provided for a hint of pepper but with a little more sediment than I prefer. Bottom line, I would not recommend making a special trip here for the wine, while it is certainly worth a stop if you are already in the area.

We stopped in here on Saturday for a quick wine tasting. We had brought cheese and crackers from Cowgirl and when we asked the Owner to eat them there, she assumed we were buying them from her - a little awkward at first. Once we got to the tasting, we had 5 wines and I thought the best were the Cabs and the Dessert Wine. While I liked the low key nature of the place, the awkward confrontation at first was a little weird and the wines were just average.

A variety of their Chardonnay, bubbly, and late-harvest Viognier...very good!

We knew that after hitting up the Marin French Cheese Co,, we were gonna find a winery in the area. Actually, anywhere we go in CA, we always try to hit up at least ONE local winery. So down Highway 1 we went and happened upon a sign at the intersection with Novato Blvd that proclaimed there was a Point Reyes Vineyards winery and that it was open...woot! Lovely place, with very nice and knowledgeable pourer ladies, with a nice selection of wines for the tasting. The $5pp tasting fee for seven tastes is waived if you buy a bottle, FYI. Personally, I like whites and bubbly and dessert wines, while Hubby is the red conoisseur. Loved the bubbly; not a fan of non-oak Chardonnays; loved the late-harvest Viognier. Hubby liked the '98 Cab and the Syrah, and ended up buying the $17 Claret. All in all, a great experience to add to our great day in the Point Reyes area. We'll be back next time we venture out to these here parts :)

Such a magical, fairy wonderland, meadery right outside of central/downtown Point Reyes…read more What's more powerful than bees? Literally nothing. Heidrun is one of your must visits if you're makinga trip up along the Highway 1 coast. Take that PTO and visit on a weekday where you basically have the entire place to yourself. The meadery is easily accessible, lots of parking (not much shade for the cars though), restrooms, and lots of outdoor seating great for the kids and dogs. I went with the seasonal tasting flight, and there's a an essentials one both for $25 value. If you buy three bottles of meads you get your tasting fee comp'd which is so great. I absolutely loved the seasonal flight, as I am all for unique and unforgettable flavors. The sage blossom is absolutely refreshing and so delicious, a great refreshing start to the flight. The chokeberry was very different, it's like a cousin to the cranberry. And the carrot blossom had a little spicy punch to it at the tail end of the sip. Everything was so delightful, effervescent and playful. There were a lot of Oregonian flower meads on this seasonal flight, which was very cool. They also sell so many cute trinkets that you can bring home as gifts, from fresh local honey from the farm to hand-watercolored cards to beeswax lotion and packets of wildflower seeds. It was so hard to not buy anything. Bring a book and sit in the shade, or come with a huge group of friends. Either way you're in for a bubbly good time.

There is an abundance of blooming flowers everywhere, and even a small beehive tucked away in the bushes. We did the tasting for $25 with 4 pours of mead. I was very impressed with the depth and variety of flavors; each pour tasted completely different from the next! Heidrun comps 1 tasting for 3 bottles purchased, which was a nice addition. Our hostesses were super sweet and chill. They were more than happy to explain a little bit about the meads and answer our questions. Would definitely stop by here again! :)

We need more winemakers like Sean Thackrey -- and we certainly need more people like him as well…read more People often like to pose the question -- if you could invite anyone from any point in history to dinner, but could only invite so many people, who would you invite? Sean Thackery is one of my people. Considered by many to be a maverick, a rebel and an eccentric -- but also one of the most philosophical, intelligent, soulful and gifted people in the wine industry. Thackery did not get degree in viticulture or enology, he studied art history. His wines are made with his intuition, what his palate tells him and tips from his collection of ancient oenological texts (the world's largest such collection in his opinion). He has been making wine in a Bolinas eucalyptus grove for more than 20 years. The first wine he produced was a Cabernet Sauvignon, but quickly moved to other varietals. Today, Thackrey says he hasn't bought a Bordeaux or a Napa Cabernet in 25 years. "They're just too damn polite for me," he says. "Why drink a wine that you wouldn't like if it were a person? It's like sitting next to someone and everything they say has to be so proper." Tastings of his wines reveal consistently powerful, intense flavors and rugged tannins -- and there is a signature minty, eucalyptussy component as well. His wines are thought provoking and complex. Unlike almost every wine in the world, Thackrey believes his taste better the day after they are opened -- and I actually might agree. "My wines are like a person," he says. "They talk, they change, they tell you something different every sip. They taste different from one day to the next, from one hour to the next. That kind of complexity is what makes wine interesting." Thackrey certainly has his followers and his critics. There are those that love his wines and others who do not -- and many of his thoughts do not find a lot of acceptance from some in the industry. His operation is quite small (3,000-5,000 cases annually), only recently adding a forklift and a bottling line. He didn't learn how to make wine by going to UC Davis -- and has both feet firmly planted in the art, only sticking his toe into the science (but understands it does have its place in the process). Thackrey often notes that there is no word for "wine-maker" in French, adding that if "chefs were trained the way wine-makers are, you would rarely eat out." Thackrey says that each time he gets back from harvest, he turns off the engine, opens the cab, and looks back at the truckbed stacked with grapes, tons of them, in hundreds of boxes. He just looks; and after a very particular moment of silence, says to myself, "OK, Sean, there it is. Do something." The first thing he does first is very interesting. After the grapes are picked, he lets them sit and "rest" at least 24 hours outside his home, a technique that one UC Davis professor says nobody else does today. Thackrey says the idea goes back at least to the Greek poet Hesiod's book "Works and Days" (circa 700 B.C.). "(Letting the grapes rest) is commonplace in wine literature until the middle of the 19th century," Thackrey says. "That's what impressed me about it. It's a lot of work to do this, so they must have thought it was accomplishing some sort of useful purpose." Thackrey does use a machine to crush the grapes, but he pours the juice into open-top vats to ferment beneath the stars and eucalyptus trees -- a technique that fell out of fashion more than 200 years ago. Thackrey reads 7 languages. In addition to making wine, he is also creating an online archive of original texts that document the history of wine and wine making. He has personally transcribed all of these documents and the library currently contains about 100 transcriptions. He hopes this will be one of his huge contributions to the wine world, but his contributions go well beyond -- and he is so deserving of more attention, respect and adoration.

He was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the experience enjoyable from start to finish. Jeremy had sold my friends a wine trivia game on their last trip, so naturally we brought it along and played while tasting. We actually played wine trivia in the car and at a few other wineries throughout our adventure, which made the trip even more memorable. The wines were delicious, and the winery has a warm, cozy atmosphere. The patio offers beautiful bay views, and even the bathrooms are charmingly decorated with thoughtful touches. One of my favorite finds was their unique champagne flutes. When you pour bubbly into them, the bubbles swirl like a tiny tornado inside the glass. It's a fun novelty and would be a great conversation piece for entertaining guests at home. Quality/Quantity - I had a hard time with the website making my appointment, it's a user issue as I am just not tech savvy. So I called and someone actually answered the phone and made my appointment for me, THANK you! We arrived 15 mins early, so we hung out in the lobby reading all the history, etc. Then Skip took us to the best view overlooking the vineyard for our tasting; see pictures! We sampled almost ALL the reds! All of which were good. See pictures. I like the fact that we did side by side tastings of many of his wines. My favorites were the 2022 Primitivo and 2021 Malbec, which we bought a few bottles of. Ambiance - Secluded private winery. Close to main Downtown Napa, but far enough away for privacy and a feeling of being far away. Appointment only, so very private and customer focused. Typically no more than 3 parties at a time. Today was considered a very busy day as there were 4 parties including us, lol. Gated private estate. 200 acres. Plenty of parking, especially since hosting only 3 guests at a time. Events - See their website. Well behaved dogs are allowed outdoors. Service - Skip is a history buff and we both talked for hours... After leaving, well really the next day (LOL), I realized that our tasting was supposed to be only 60 minutes. I guess because we got along so well, we stayed until closing! And he gave me a glass with a generous splash and let us walk the property alone after they left! So welcoming and trusting. Price - Depends on which tasting and what you buy; see their website for prices. Tastings range from $50 to $100 per person. One free designated driver allowed. Tasting fees waived with wine equivalent purchases. Hike tours $75 per person ($60 for club members). See their website for more information.
