Due to Covid restrictions, we sat outside on a nice, little patio area, however we weren't able to go into what appeared to be a wine cave (I'm guessing it was, because no one really told us much about the winery). WINES: As mentioned, our tasting included 5 pours: a 2017 Sparkling Pinot Noir, a 2017 Heritage Reserve Chardonnay, a 2018 Estate Chardonnay (extra pour; not on the menu), two 2018 Pinot Noirs, one Estate and one from Carneros, and finally a 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. Schug's wines seemed to be well made, but tend to be on the light, dry/acidic side. Not really our favorites. They were okay, but nothing I would say "wow" about. That being said, we did take 2 bottles, the Estate Chardonnay and the Carneros Pinot Noir. I always state that wines are very subjective to an individual's taste, so if you're into lighter, stainless steel aged, acidic wines, this might be the place for you. This is an awesome wine tasting experience! First, it's off the beaten path - this is not a winery sitting next to the highway like most of the places in Sonoma. You pull off on a quiet country road and drive by farms as you ascend to the winery and tasting room on a hill overlooking Sonoma with beautiful views. We stopped by on a co,d rainy day in January, and were welcomed by Dawn. The flight is typically a white or two and then Pinot noirs for which Schug is well known. I had guests visiting from out-of-town and decided to try a smaller winery in Sonoma for a change, I was not disappointed. Schug Winery was the perfect place for our group of 4. The views of the Carneros Valley were incredible, the wines remarkable, the venue quite nice. We enjoyed a glass of sparking rose as we were guided around property followed by a private tasting (with charcuterie) inside their vast caves. The attention to detail was noted: a well appointed tasting table were we enjoyed several estate and Carneros Valley varietals, and had hosts Stephen and Bess providing in-depth descriptions of each wine. We never felt rushed.... nothing like previous experiences at larger wineries. We finished our visit by purchasing a case of wine to take home and joining the Schug wine club. We were visiting Sonoma wine country for the first time and picked Schug for tasting because of the German roots of the owners. The tasting costs 35 dollars and if you buy two bottles, they will waive one of the tasting fees. The tasting features 5 wines and it has a good variety of reds, whites and rose. This winery is located amongst a winery-packed area and was a nice, convenient stop between going to a couple others but I have to be honest - it wasn't my favorite. The scenery was gorgeous, but there's no outdoor seating for tastings, so you're standing inside this little area doing the tasting and it feels more like a "please buy our wine and leave" experience than a "come have a nice time and enjoy our space and buy the wine if you like it!" space. The host was super nice, but being inside standing just made it feel uncomfortable. Overall, I'd recommend it to fans of red wine - that definitely seemed to be their specialty. But if that's not your thing, maybe drive in for the scenery and then head out. read more

This was the first winery we stopped at in Sonoma because I seen the check in offer on Yelp. Not really much to see here. the tasting room Is pretty small can probably can accommodate maybe six people at the most. As for the property I didn't really get a chance to look around there. We did the $10 tasting of 5 wines and none of the where good out of all 5 and the wine was pretty expensive,it reminded me of the stuff they sell at Bevmo buy one and get the second bottle for 5 cents. Ask for Ray if you come. She is great fun! Knowledgeable, friendly and joyful. We enjoyed our tasting with her. The environment is beautiful, it's a smaller winery so you get more time talking and learning. The wine is quite good and very reasonably priced. In November they release their sparkling red. COVID friendly and an absolute delight!! This was such a lovely wine tasting. Drove up through wild poppy fields and sat outside in their courtyard which was distanced and very pretty and mellow. We did their classic tasting. The wines were delicious especially the sparkling rose and the Pinot Grigio! Jamie was our server and was super knowledgeable and sweet. She even offered us a few olive oil tasting suggestions and took a few photos. In the middle of the tasting, the Chef came out with two salads for us to try and included the recipes. Such a nice treat and they were delicious and gave us a great idea for a future dinner party once lockdown is over. Also loved that she gave us the recipes to take home! Getting this winery from Sonoma proper isn't difficult. Once here, the winery itself is very scenic. There's a beautiful view when facing away from the building of a pond, rolling hills, and the vineyard. The building itself has a cozy German cottage aesthetic other than the dirt crusted car with the words "Wash Me" crossed out and a reply of "Never" just underneath. Cozy is appropriate because the tasting room is very small. If there are a lot of people, it can be very frustrating. Especially since the bathroom is just opposite the tasting table yielding a constant glow in and out of the bathroom if there is a large private party with many children. They do have a private tasting room deep in the bowels of the winery, but I was told they don't do tastings outside for small groups which was disappointing because of how nice it was the day we were there. Prepare of a lot if reds. No blends either because the winery motto was "maintain the purity of the grape." It sounds appropriately German. The free tasting from the yelp offer is greatly appreciated. The wines themselves were excellent, but they came to us in a disorganized manner. I was confused as to what we were drinking because the list of wines was not in the order the wines were poured. The staff was friendly and generous with the pours, but not as knowledgable as other locations. However, they were chaperoning a large group with kids, so the experts were probably with the private party. read more

I've only been to the touristy wineries in Napa, which I enjoyed, but Schug was a nice, intimate change from the napa madness. We were probably there for a total of 20 minutes each tasted 5 different wines at no charge (gotta love that). With the exception of the merlot I really enjoyed them all and we shipped a few bottles home, which I'm excited about drinking in just a few days! The owner was very helpful and pointed us in the direction of a few other great wineries that he thought we'd enjoy. This was our first stop on our wine-tasting weekend and we had a nice, but not stellar time. As some of the other reviews have noted, the tasting room is extremely hectic and tough to navigate. It's not exactly a leisurely, educational experience but it's a pleasant enough time, and free! Plus the surrounding grounds are of course gorgeous. Say hello to the ducks! Certainly not a can't-miss, but for us it was near our hotel and convenient to get to in the late afternoon. The wines were fine but we didn't go home with any, for what it's worth! read more

A friend recommended this place to us, and it did not disappoint. Great scenery, friendly, excellent wine & service. We checked in on yelp and received 2 wine tastings for free. They were happy that used that feature and started pouring our first glass upon showing them. We tried 5 different wines and ended up purchasing 1 bottle. The tasting room is small and intimate and everyone was friendly knowledgable about the region and wine. Afterwards we were greeted by Hamilton who worked there and was very fun and helpful. He took some pictures for us and included a panoramic photo from our phone to our surprise! It was excellent! We headed down to the outdoor seating area where there was live music, more wine tasting, and great vibes. They even had a game of bags or corn hole going. Love love love schug. Period. I live in NC and we have it all over - very cool, because I didn't know that. We stopped in for a tasting. $10 for 5 wines (and yelp check-in gets you a free one!) which seems to be on the lower end of the going rate. Alyssa took care of us and was fabulous. Very smart and charming, about our age (late 20s) so when she had a few minutes stopped and chatted with us. She gave us about a half dozen coupons for tastings at other wineries, and two bonus pours! (One, a vintage Pinot, the other a sparkling Pinot that just happened to be open). She also brought the vintner into a conversation to guide us on how to age our wines. Schug wine is great, and Alyssa is surely an asset to the winery. Must go! read more

HARD PASS. I bought a General Admission ticket to Schugtoberfest through Groupon. General Admission is suppose to include five food/drink tickets. From their website: "Admission includes drink tickets, bites, live polka with dancing, and stunning views of Carneros." When I got there, they told me that since I had a Groupon, nothing is included and I don't get any tickets. Um... WHAT?? So what did I pay $25 for?? To get in? I could've just walked in through the back for free. Lol what a scam. I won't come back to this winery again because I see how they do business here. Pretty shady imo. As for the Schugtoberfest itself, it was kinda sad. It was just a bunch of people sitting at tables underneath a large white tent. Nothing like the Octoberfest I had envisioned. Prices: $7 for 1 ticket. $20 for 4 tickets. Menu: 4 tickets for a shriveled up bratwurst, 2 tickets for a serving of wine, 1 ticket to taste. Totally not worth it. read more

Very disappointed in this winery! We walked in and the first thing my friends and I noticed was the horrible smell. The gentleman helping us was very unkept. At one point he proceeded to pull out a tissue and start blowing his nose! The staff was very unprofessional, cursing in front of us, etc... The wine itself was nothing to write home about. The focus at Schug is on the WINE! For years I have found their Pinot Noir to be the gold standard of this delicate varietal. Long before "Sideways" put Pinot Noir into the American lexicon, it has been a wine drinker's wine that Schug does masterfully. They have turned that skill to our best advantage by making a sparkling version of that Pinot that makes any event just that much more special. Their tasting is room is intimate... but, wait! We got the inside scoop that new leadership is bringing a new tasting room and event space for Schug. They also have a quiet, covered outdoor space with sweeping views of the Carneros hills. While there we met Nicole, whose enthusiasm is utterly contagious, and her knowledge of wine instilled such confidence in us that we stayed longer than we had planned. Nicole made us feel like we were members already, which I guess is why we joined the club. Their club is such a great value, and they also had two different mixed case specials. Samplers to take home and savor. It was a "No Brainer"! Tastings come at a reasonable price, but they waived that when we bought our wine. Plus we got the member's discount. Sweet! Shipping was so reasonable that I sent a mixed case back east for friends. The next weekend we went back for their special event, an annual Lobster Feed! The food was top notch and bountiful. The group of unrelated members quickly became an energetic band of friends. The kids even put down their iPhones for a while and enjoyed the whole lobster experience (and to keep from getting drawn butter on their screens). This is one of the first wineries along the Sonoma wine trail, coming from SF. "Take a left at the flashing light..." and you'll be there. Don't miss it. Schug was the 4th and last stop on my private wine tour with my husband. It is a German family owned winery and has a cozy family feel when you walk in, but it is a very small tasting room. Our private group of 5 filled up the place. There is also only 1 bathroom, and no music so everyone can listen to someone peeing during the tasting. We went in May and the weather was nice but standing in a small room was not a good ambiance for us. The tasting was 4 wines for $20 pp I believe. I cannot remember the person's name giving the tastings, but he asked my husband twice if he wanted to buy any wine towards the end and it was awkward. Being from FL, I do not think we would make another trek out there, but may order some wine online, I really enjoyed the 2018 Rose of Pinot, Sonoma Coast. read more

I typically don't like Chardonnay, but Schug makes a very good one that has earned several accolades in San Francisco tastings--definitely well-deserved. Schug also makes a rosé that was surprisingly good, and would go great with Thanksgiving dinner. It gets three stars cause the tasting room was teeny tiny and people were kind of scrunched in there; it may not be so busy all the time and I just happened to be in while there was a full room. First of all let me say that Schug has good wines and I've purchased their wine during my previous visits. I had memorable times at the old wine tasting room with the previous staff. I believe they had a few elderly gentlemen that are sweet and charming. I wish I could say the same about the current staff. In particular, I do like to point out their Outreach and Estate concierge manager (Jamie) was not so hospitable. Wine tasting is an experience that comprises of wine and the memories built around it. Thereby, I certainly do not recommend Schug for their lack of hospitality which is a bit disheartening as they do make memorable wines. This a fairly small tasting room, and doesn't have the views of other wineries nearby but is expanding at the time of this review. The wines are some of the best I have had in Sonoma and for a $10 tasting it is something I would highly recommend. The staff is extremely accommodating, and very knowledgeable and Nicole's passion for what she does makes the experience even more enjoyable. Every wine we tasted from the Chardonnay to the Cabernet were all excellent which is a rarity in my experience with other Sonoma wineries, I usually find a couple I like and some that are just meh. I am not a huge Merlot drinker but after sampling theirs I was highly impressed not only of the taste but at the price, it is hard to find a better value. We left ordering several varietals and will be loyal customers going forward. It is tucked back up a winding road off of 121/ Arnold road but only about 1/2mile from the main street. read more
