This is an awesome wine tasting experience! First, it's off the beaten path - this is not a winery sitting next to the highway like most of the places in Sonoma. You pull off on a quiet country road and drive by farms as you ascend to the winery and tasting room on a hill overlooking Sonoma with beautiful views. We stopped by on a co,d rainy day in January, and were welcomed by Dawn. The flight is typically a white or two and then Pinot noirs for which Schug is well known. I highly recommend this place for wine tasting. All the wines were excellent, and we went home with some sparkling rose and Pinot noir. We will be back!

Outdoor tasting area was nice. Appeared to be a wine cave behind it, but due to Covid-19 restrictions, all inside activities were off.

Nice little winery sitting up on the hillside with views of the vineyards and valley below. $30/guest for a 5 flight tasting (waived with any 2 bottle purchase). SERVICE: Brendon poured for us and service was okay, but nothing special. Due to Covid restrictions, we sat outside on a nice, little patio area, however we weren't able to go into what appeared to be a wine cave (I'm guessing it was, because no one really told us much about the winery). WINES: As mentioned, our tasting included 5 pours: a 2017 Sparkling Pinot Noir, a 2017 Heritage Reserve Chardonnay, a 2018 Estate Chardonnay (extra pour; not on the menu), two 2018 Pinot Noirs, one Estate and one from Carneros, and finally a 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. Schug's wines seemed to be well made, but tend to be on the light, dry/acidic side. Not really our favorites. They were okay, but nothing I would say "wow" about. That being said, we did take 2 bottles, the Estate Chardonnay and the Carneros Pinot Noir. I always state that wines are very subjective to an individual's taste, so if you're into lighter, stainless steel aged, acidic wines, this might be the place for you. Worth a try and the grounds and views are beautiful.

We were visiting Sonoma wine country for the first time and picked Schug for tasting because of the German roots of the owners. The tasting costs 35 dollars and if you buy two bottles, they will waive one of the tasting fees. The tasting features 5 wines and it has a good variety of reds, whites and rose. We really enjoyed both, the bubbly and regular Savingnon Blanc and got two bottles to go. Our sommelier was incredible and very helpful throughout our experience.

Friends and I just did a quick stop. We took some pictures and walked in. It's a tiny place with just a small tasting bar. I didn't see a bathroom. There is a loud buzzing sound of cars that you can hear from the winery. Free tastings, but since my friends don't drink I didn't want to try them by myself. Will return with the hubby next time. Two friendly people inside it seems anyways. Hrs: 10-5

This was the first winery we stopped at in Sonoma because I seen the check in offer on Yelp. Not really much to see here. the tasting room Is pretty small can probably can accommodate maybe six people at the most. As for the property I didn't really get a chance to look around there. We did the $10 tasting of 5 wines and none of the where good out of all 5 and the wine was pretty expensive,it reminded me of the stuff they sell at Bevmo buy one and get the second bottle for 5 cents. Service was get here the guy guy that served us was nice but the wine just did not do it for us. Sorry Srhug Carneros Estae.

Very nice wines here. Known for their Pinot Noir, their white wine selections are good to. The tasting room is a bit small but enough space for a couple groups. Can get a little loud. If you're the only group, it's a nice experience. The staff is very friendly. Wouldn't mind coming back to try out the wines again. Tasting fee is $5, but is waved if you purchase a bottle (which we did) :)

View from courtyards

Such a great winery to stop at! Val was our hostess and made it a wonderful experience. The courtyard was super cute and had a great view. The wine was amazing and fairly priced.

Amazing outdoor space. Tasting delivered to your umbrella'd patio table or wooden lawn chair. Quiet, intimate and good wines! Its 75 percent ambience at these places, all the wines are delicious

The Good: + The tasting offered a bunch of wines and two chowders which was a nice changeup (from drinking all day). + A couple who produces American Extra Virgin Olive Oil (please I'm not Rachael Ray) had a little booth in the back. We ended up buying a bottle (but no wine - isn't it ironic). + Close to SF and was a quick drive. The Bad: - The tasting we attended coincided with another special event and therefore crowded, seemed like a meat market. The Ugly: -- Deemed the "Pinot Noir Specialists" I was expecting to taste a serious showcase of wines. The tasting only had one. I wasn't moved and utterly disappointed (I highly anticipated this visit). IFHTP 1

Ask the Community - Schug Winery

Is the tasting room and/or grounds dog-friendly?

Hello! Our general, indoor tasting room is only open to service animals due to size constraints. However, our outdoor courtyard (open Thursday - Sunday, Memorial day through October) is dog friendly!

Can you get to the barrel room on a self guided tour? :)

Hi Christine! The self guided vineyard tour is the outside of the property and vineyard. You have to book a cave tour in order to go inside the winery and caves. We have our annual Oktoberfest on 9/30 and you will be able to tour most of the caves… Read more

Booked the wine tasting for four. initially we planned to do the outlook where we were given a wooden cabana to sit with our group from afar. It looks aesthetic and alluring, but when we sat inside to see how it was, it felt cold and the walls were so high that you couldn't even view the vineyard. one of those things where the idea is great, but execution not so much. Ended up on the heated terrace which was way more comfortable. Service: 2/5 our server didn't seem very knowledgeable about the wine when we asked questions and of the information that she gave us, it sounded like a list of notes from a description that the wine maker gave her. This was very disappointing. The entire interaction felt strange, and there was no eye contact. We all felt rushed because when we weren't done drinking the wine, she would always come in and tell us she's gonna pour us the next wine, then leave, just so we need to finish the current glass we had. In general, if we aren't able to finish a glass of wine fast enough, or we just don't want to it would be nice if the winery could provide more glasses for us to try the rest of the wines instead of being rushed and using the same glass for every round. Overall, this place is great if you want something very casual. It's such a fun place to sip on wine with friends. Butttt, if you are looking for a true wine experience to learn, this is not the place.

Super easy process and check-in as well. From what I saw, there were two main histoic buildings and both had a lot of character. The older architecture and stone details gave it taht classic wine country feel without trying too hard. There was plenty of seating and the space felt open and comfortable. The wine lineup was solid and well curated. They're known for their reds, but I lean more toward the whites and still found a good variety to enjoy. What stood out most for me was the special guided tour our Sommelier done for us. I loved seeing the antiques and hearing about the history behind the buildings and how the winery came to be. It made the whole experience feel more meaningful instead of just going in for a tasting and leaving. I didn't leave with bottles this time, but I genuinely enjoyed the experience and everything I learned. Definitely will be back! Also there are some really nice antique stores very close by, so it's easy to make a whole afternoon out of it.

My girls and I went for my best friend's birthday and we honestly had such a wonderful time. When you call and inquire they tell you that non-members can only book on weekdays, so my girls and I made a reservation on a Friday. You pay up front for the total amount of people, which also includes tax and service tip, so when you arrive on the day of your reservation, no payment whatsoever is needed! It was $85, and with tax and service fee it came out to $111 each. When my girls and I arrived, we were greeted by a host named, Justin. She was immensely warm and inviting, basically sunshine in a person, and made us feel so welcome and comfortable!! She poured us a welcome glass of rose, and my girls and I were able to walk around the property (which was truly stunning) with our glasses. When we were seated, we were served rosemary almonds, and our server came up and introduced the history of the venue, as well as the menu, and wine. The menu was set, and it was absolutely incredible. This was the first time I felt as though this experience included an actual MEAL rather than an array of small bites or a small charcuterie platter: 1. fried olives 2. tomatoes and cucumbers with whipped feta (MY FAVORITE) 3. Prosciutto, melon and basil 4. Braised butterbeans with SCRIBE olive oil 5. House-made flatbread (so delicious) The wine was amazing, of course. We received about 4 glasses of 3 oz pours, which was enough for us. The Chardonnay was definitely my favorite. If you're ever in the Sonoma area, I HIGHLY recommend making a reservation you honestly WILL NOT REGRET IT.

The food was all so fresh, with lots of great flavor but also feeling healthy- we particularly loved the arancini and the bread with oil. The wines were all tasty but honestly, not as memorable as the views/staff/food- I think this winery is definitely worth a visit for those elements alone. I think the light red was probably my favorite but would be back for more food honestly :)

The day we went, we did an indoor tasting because it was so cold, they didn't do any outdoor tastings. The outdoor courtyard is covered, and they have a large event space with some wine barrels that I presume is for wedding receptions. You can walk out to the fountain and vineyards and take pictures. We went in December so of course the vines were bare, but overall still beautiful and peaceful. There is an olive oil tasting room and various products for purchase.
