Poilane is another classic must try boulangerie where bread is the star. This place is adored by Ina Garten and she is friends with the owner. The star here is the bread that is made with select grains that will last for a few days if you can hold out for that long. Of course pastries are also on offer and often sell out early in the day as was in my case . I settled on coffee with flan , which was good but didn't wow me. Got an apple tart, which is what they are apparently best known for. Being from SoCal and used to Porto's, this was just okay. I don't know what I expected, but I guess I just expected more? Expected something amazing? It wasn't a bad apple tart, but it just wasn't something worth going out of your way to try (which is what we did). read more

It would seem, from reading other reviews, as well as my own personal experience, that the dining room space is wholly underutilized. Patrons seem to enter left, get their carbs, and exit! I was the only one having petite déjeuner on a rainy morning before my schedule Picasso museum visit. I've seen vid of Patricia Wells going down into the famed basement where their Poilane loaves are all resting , without yeast might I add! I've read many an article detailing the tragic and untimely death of the founders of the empire, and how the daughter came back from American after university to be at the helm. I've tasted the bread, with beurre Bordier...i plan on getting a recipe for their punitions and baking them during the holidays. And then I came for toast. No eggs, no meat, though the menu states so; just butter and jam available. Bit boring for $11 USD. At least the chocolat chaud was on point, and the toast...oh that toast....it's so darn perfect. Pretty dining space with n'ary room in between tables to squeeze in. But for me, it was a ghost town. read more

I live that you can buy a slice of bread to try. It was very, very good, cold, no butter, no embellishments of any kind. Im sure it would make wonderful toast, or a wonderful vehicle for any number of delicious snacks. This bakery feels like something you would see in a movie of a Parisian bakery. The food is very good and high quality. There is nothing flashy or fancy. Just straight up a Parisian bakery. A middle aged French woman was helping us and she was polite and friendly. You don't sit here and eat, so be prepared to buy what you want for takeaway. read more

I've been there on a Sunday morning and my friend and I were not sure if that is a real bakery. It was big but had very few options. Maybe because it was a Sunday. I've had coffee (ok) and the best (!!!) pain au chocolate. My friend had a tarte au pomme and has said that it was delicious. I will go there again on a regular weekday. read more

Food = 5 stars! Service = 3ish stars but as I would call this place a must visit for traditional pastries and breads (been in business since before WWII, really interesting story behind the owners involving types of yeast and flour they use), I'm going with 5 stars. Food: Buttery croissants, apple rolls, and butter cookies are the best! The strawberry jam here is small batch, no sugar added and AMAZING!! Service... not so much friendly but efficient. Coffee is disappointing (but on par for French cafes) but the tea and huge bowls of hot chocolate are good beverages to have with their breakfast sets. We liked coming in and leisurely enjoying breakfast sets but each time we did, the eat-in dining area was curiously empty, most people come for take-away. read more

The joys of having a perfectly flaky French pastry! My friend and I stopped by a couple Sunday mornings ago for a sugary breakfast. We split a Pain au Chocolat and one of the dumpling looking apple pastries (I sadly have already forgotten the French name for it). Oh my gosh, both pastries were so perfect. They featured the flakiest of pastry dough that melted in your mouth. The apple pastry was stuffed with flavorful apples and the Pain Aux Chocolate had beautifully melted chocolate. Such a welcome change from the two sticks of chocolate we get in the U.S. Service was nice and they were giving everyone little mini biscuits to try. Already missing the pastries, cannot wait to come back. read more

Divine croissant. I had my first Parisian croissant at Angelina's, which didn't blow me away. But the croissant from here (eaten right away) was deliciously flaky and just the right amount of buttery softness. The butter cookies were addictively good too. The service here was simple and attentive. You buy your bread and leave - there isn't a place for you to sit and eat it. I had to visit Poilâne while in Paris because Barefoot Contessa said it was her favorite bakery. I picked up some cute goodies but didn't at all find this place to be nearly as charming as other bakeries in Le marais. Everything was very pricey as well. Kind of a disappointment. read more

Poilane is a storied bakery and on my visit to Paris I was so thrilled to have a chance to visit their bakery and their cafe. While it was a fine experience, and the service and people were friendly, and the breads were great, I guess it didn't prove to be quite the transcendent experience I had heard it was for others. Given we had to go way out of our way to visit one of their bakeries, I'm not sure I would make the effort the next time I am in Paris. The best experience we had with their baguette was at a bistro that served their bread with our cheese plate. I may try to get a baguette from one of the bakeries the next time we're there as we'll rent an apartment, but given the other delicious pastries and bread we had in Paris during our visit, I did not find them to be the absolute best thing I'd ever eaten. read more

We were looking forward to coming to eat at the Poilâne café, a place we had visited on our previous trip to Paris. However, we won't be coming again. The service was rude, nervous and abrupt. At some point we could smell that something had burnt, only to realise that it was our "tartine" they were serving us a couple of minutes later! Rather basic. Chocolate croissant was rather dense and wasn't fluffy. Hot chocolate was very good. They give you a spoon shaped cookie that is nothing special. I would give it a 4 had they not been amped up by famous chefs and rankings. It's just average. read more

The Crayfish Guacomole Tartine was not exciting at all and very flat in terms of flavor. Past its prime. It's a shame, 15 years ago, this was a gem. Now, it's another tourist trap with fair food at silly prices, and terrible service. Last I was there, they grouped the Americans together at the communal table in the back, in the construction zone (to save the front tables for "the rush" - the last week of August). Another Poilane location. I don't know if they all have cafe's or not, but this one does. I can't understand why Poilane would get anything less than 5 stars. I guess if you want something strong and super-sweet, this is not the place. Even though I am an American with non-existent French language skills, they were super-nice to me in the mornings when things were quiet. Just pay attention and let them do the choosing/touching of the product and be VERY courteous. The croissant has incredible flake and butter flavors. It's just indescribable. The tart is a masterpiece where all the ingredients work together. The crust, apple and sugar/spice in equal amounts over the entire chewing experience. It needs nothing. There are other bakeries, and this one won't appeal to everyone. But, wow. I'm almost sad this doesn't appeal to everyone. We had breakfast one morning and it was totally consistent with everything else they do. Excellent food, excellent service even to Americans. read more

I had contacted this bakery beforehand, as my daughter has food allergies and we were not sure if it would be safe for her to eat there. Not only were they very responsive to my questions previous to our visit, but when we arrived the woman who was working there (I wish I had gotten her name) was so sweet and patient as we made our choices. Indeed, they are very allergy aware, and I have to say that this was one of the highlights of our trip to Paris! My daughter was able to eat bread, croissants, and pastries from this bakery ... something we would never do at home. The croissants and fruit tarts were fabulous ... Thank you, Poilâne! One of the best croissants I've had in paris. I stayed at an apartment right around the corner from the store. The lady spoke very little english but was quite friendly and nice. She even recommended me to go to the italian cafe down the road for a good coffee. Will definitely return in June! read more

There are 3/4 small boulangeries within a 3 minute walk of this place that deserve your business much more than this place. I got a pain au chocolat which tasted stale (even though I bought it at 8:30am), had almost no flake, and had no sheen on the shell. I also purchased a tarte au pommes which was overly sweet and extremely doughy on the bottom. read more
