I traveled to France to meet up with my son in Metz, but I stayed in Paris for a day to go to Poilane. I'm glad I did. It's a small store, but it gets the job done. I was warmly greeted to two friendly clerks who were patient while I took some tome to take in the experience. They accommodated my photography and helped me navigate my French. I ordered two croissants and sourdough (a quarter of their famous large boule). Both items were delicious, but the sourdough certainly lived up to the hype. The crust was thick and chewy. We really wanted to try this bakery when visiting Paris, so we came to this location and were very disappointed to see it's really just an outpost of the main bakery, so the selection was very limited. The items we did try were nice, but there wasn't much to choose from. Additionally, everything needed to be taken to go, as they don't have seats, nor tables and they also don't have espresso or coffee. So, we took the pastries we bought to a local café and enjoyed their coffee with these pastries. The pastries were good. read more

Staying in nearby Montparnasse, decided to grab pastries and croissants here to take back to my hotel to indulge with throughout the day. As others mentioned, I highly recommend you come as early as possible for not only the freshest pastries but also just to smell inside the bakery. The yeasty smells from fresh baked bread should literally be boxed up and taken with you everywhere. The girls who worked there spoke great English and after carefully trying hard not to purchase the whole store I picked our plain croissants, a load of brioche and a tub of butter (which was about $8 euros but worth it). This bakery was the starting point of a food tour by Paris by Mouth (https://parisbymouth.com) I took in the summer of 2016. We only tried one pastry (apple) as a sample. It was good, but not a WOW. I bought some cookies for souvenir. They are also good but nothing amazing. I just visited here again in March 2017. I asked one of the people working here for her recommendation. She strongly recommended their flan (picture). I love sweets, but I couldn't finish even half of it. Because of my so-so experiences and their prices, I don't think I will try them again. Had breakfast at Poilâne and I must say I was a bit disappointed. It wasn't bad, but considering the raving reviews of this place, it didn't meet my expectations. Food: we ordered the complete breakfast (Switched our the croissant for a chocolate croissant), the toast with egg and cheese, an apple turnover, and the croissant+coffee combo. The food was mediocre, nothing too special or life changing. The croissant was good. Very fluffy and extremely buttery... but it was cold. All the pastries we ordered were COLD, which was extremely sad. Considering we sat down to eat, I would have expected them to heat it up for us. It truly would have made the biggest difference. The toast with egg and cheese was the only warm thing and it was yummy but definitely not worth the price we paid for it. My favorite croissant in Paris! Saw this recommended on quite a few locals' guides to Paris, so knew I had to make a stop here. It was about a 10 minute walk (max) from the Metro through a very cute neighborhood, filled with lots of shops and boutiques. This location is also close to Pierre Herme if you're looking to hit up all of Paris' famous dessert spots. I got a simple croissant, which cost me 2 euros. The employees didn't speak English very well (understandable and anticipated!) but a simple "je voudrais une croissant" sufficed. This is the place to go for 3 things: 1) Punitions/Sables. These are a butter cookie that they make, which EVERYONE loves. I have to bring everyone in my family home their own giant bag whenever I go to Paris. They go great with a little jam or Nutella on them too. 2) Miche. This is their country loaf. It's made using a natural yeast fermentation process using an extremely old starter dough. Packed with SO much flavor! This is my favorite bread for toast in the morning, or to add jam or Nutella on as an afternoon snack. It's also great for sandwiches. 3) Croissants. Super buttery and flakey. You'll love them! Great breakfast spot! Came here because of the good reputation and it was indeed delightful. I had their brioche - with an egg inside and melted cheese on top - as well as their apple tart. I liked both, and the thick toasted brioche was the most delicious. The service was efficient and pleasant. Really nice staff - my server was cool, although she wouldn't stop speaking to me in English (I'm trying to practice the little bit of French I know LOL!). I think it's a bit overhyped by social media. Not a terrible place but there much better bakeries around that are cheaper. The bread was not as soft as other with the croissants. They are mostly known for their big loaf of bread with the signature P. I would skip it. Stohrer is better if you need to try one of these trendy social media boom bakeries in Paris. This is always on our "must-visit" list whenever we are in town. My main go-to is their punition cookies in any shape or form (my preferred is the spoon-shaped ones because of how convenient it is and you can make them last longer if you're a nibbler like me). They are also really well known for their sourdough bread as well. The interior space is rather cozy so you should really know what you're going to order and leave ASAP. Second stop on our food tour was this bakery, walking in if u love bread the smell alone will make u crazy not a lot of things smell as wonderful as fresh baked bread does. Once inside they spoke a bit about the process of how the bread is made all baking is done on premises starting early in the morning. Cool to see was the lamp made entirely of bread such a cool concept if I recall correctly think they have to replace it every 6 months. This bakery specializes in customizing the bread u can pretty much add anything u want to the bread your name, shapes whatever suites u... they also seem to be a major supplier of bread for France not bad. We were able to try the Butter cookies which were very good nice taste. Also tried a piece of fresh bread pretty good as well. Small shop above all the baking is done on premises below this place was nice to check out. read more

First stop in Paris! The two of us have always wanted to try the bread at Poilâne after reading the interesting New Yorker article about the owner several years ago. Luckily, this original location wasn't far from our hotel. We got two slices of the miche sourdough, an apple tart, and three complimentary punitions. The bread is delicious, with a crisp crust and chewy sourness in the middle--we wished we had some butter on us to make it Next Level! We're not big cooked apple people, but we still enjoyed the tart, and two thumbs up for extra flakiness. The punitions are sables--none of us were having a "le wow!!!" experience, though they were fine. It's a butter cookie, everyone, calm down. Our only complaint was the particularly rude woman who was helping us. Oui, oui, we KNOW that all service personnel in France are rude (this isn't our first French rodeo!) but one of us speaks French half-decently and she was still being rude. For no reason! Everyone else in the store seemed somewhat pleasant, so...pourquoi, Madame Grumpypantalons?? Anyway, happy to have tried this place once, but it doesn't need to be a "must stop" on repeat visits. She pointed to this loaf of bread and said that one and asked me how many I wanted. Me: "one please" Her eyes were bulging when she responded: "one?!" Me: "umm two?" My experience this time was mediocre but I was partly to blame as I went late in the afternoon. The women working there were unfriendly and looked tired. Of course the selection of available offerings was pretty depleted but that was because of the time of day. The workers really were unhelpful and could care less that I had entered their shop. Although I'd been getting pain Poilâne half loaves at the neighborhood Shopi market on both our visits, I finally made a pilgrimage to the boulangerie. Their hearty signature bread is a favorite of mine, a complex sourdough with part whole wheat flour. I bought a whole loaf to take home and it stayed fresh for several days. Alas, I had to give up gluten at the start of the year. I have been wanting a loaf of Poilâne sourdough for years. Really, since I last visited Paris in the 80's. A friend tried to bring me a loaf once & left it on the airplane. Bummer! Anyway when I arrived at the Cherche-Midi address I found a line outside the shop door. Needless to say, I waited in line for my turn & promptly got a loaf & left the shop. I don't remember the shop being as small as it was, which really didn't allow for perusing the other available goods. Mission accomplished after about 48 hours of backpack toting my almost 3 pound miche home I sliced into it. I suppose if I had sliced into it immediately it would have been great. I love the hearty texture & sourness. It is different than typical California sourdough. Maybe I will try it again when I can eat it the day it is purchased, but for now I will be happy with my small local bread bakeries. Or, I can try making my own using Apollonia Poilâne's book that my son gave me for Christmas. read more

Some of the best and most perfect bread you will ever eat in your life. Walking into the shop, the walls are lined with beautiful perfect round loaves with that emblematic "P" written in cursive. We had just spent the entire morning at the Lourve and thought it was time to relax for a picnic. Go to any supermarket and grab yourself some brie and 5 Euro bottle of red wine. We were unable to find knives, but found a 1 Euro package of protractors and rulers. Stop by a Starbucks and ask kindly for some plastic cups. Go Poilane and get maybe half a loaf for 3 people. Make sure to get it sliced and even order more bread if you want to keep some for later. Then stumble your way over to Jardin du Luxembourg, one of the largest parks in Paris. Find yourself some seats and start enjoying. To open the bottle of wine, grab a pen and push cork down. Do it carefully and slowly unless you want to stain yourself with red wine. Open the package of rulers and protractors and MacGyver then as plastic knives to spread brie on the perfect bread from Poilane. Just sit there and enjoy the beauty of the park.
