After many failed attempts to eat at Pody's, always passing through Pecos on the wrong day or at the wrong time, we got there at 1:30 on a Saturday, surely early enough this time. On the door was the dreaded "Sold Out - Closed." We sat in our travel-trailer-hauling SUV in the vast, empty parking lot, trying to figure out where we could get any BBQ at all on our way north. After a while, a very nice lady came out to the car and asked us in. She told us there were still ribs left, and sausage, but no briscuit. Ribs sounded fine to us so we went in and ordered two plates of ribs, beans and the unique southwestern posole. Everything was great. The peppery ribs were done just right and the tangy sauce was some of the best I've had in Texas. Pody came out and chatted with us about the boom going on in the area. We were really delighted with the meal and the conversation. Maybe next time we can get there early enough to get some briscuit. It is not easy to find great BBQ in west Texas. Being from San Antonio and having ventured to such amazing barbecue joints like Blacks, Texas Pride, Franklins, and Smittys I know me some good finger licking BBQ. So when I saw the reviews of this place I knew I had to see what all the fuss was about. Boy was that a great decision! From the parking lot Podys doesn't seem like anything special and just another BBQ rest stop. But once you journey in and see the long lines for mouthwatering barbecue you realize you're somewhere special. I had the two meat plate with pulled pork, brisket, chili cheese hominy,and potato salad. The pulled pork with some of the best I've ever had and was perfectly seasoned and amazingly tender. It was my favorite! The brisket was falling apart and had a good char and crust I just should have asked for lean as mine was a little fatty but still delicious. I drenched both meats in tons of their house made BBQ sauce that had a good suttle tang. The hominy chili cheese was amazing and something I had never had, I wanted to swim in it, it was so good! This was my first time in Pecos and I will definitely be back again for some more Pody's!!! read more

The BBQ is very good. The potato salad and beans were spot on. The only thing downside is that you pay pretty dearly for three slices of Turkey. On the other hand, the chopped brisket sandwich had enough meat to feed a family of three. Do NOT use the sauce labeled HOT unless you can handle a ton of heat. It is the hottest BBQ sauce I even eaten. Overall I would eat here again if I got here early and not in the summer months. At least I got to check off another spot on the Texas Monthly top 50, but I struggle to understand how this one got there. I ordered the brisket, sausage, mac & cheese, and pinto beans. Both of the sides were watery and rather tasteless. After a couple of bites, they went into the trash. The sausage was nothing special. It tasted like a packaged sausage you would get in a grocery store. The brisket was poorly sliced. I got the section that was half flat and half point, but the point was running entirely with the grain. The flat and point should have been separated at that section and the point sliced across the grain. Also, there was very little trimming before smoking. There was a big fat cap on top, The most amazing thing was that there was no bark on the brisket. Maybe it was just smoked for a couple of hours and then put in an oven. I don't know how you smoke a brisket and get no bark, but they accomplished it. read more

Love finding these little gems while traveling. Fine fine smoked meat. To me where they went right most go wrong that is Toooo much smoke. This place nails it with just the right amount. Had the pulled pork sandwich. Moist juicy tender and not overloaded with fat. Bbq sauce was good also. Place not overly clean but hey it's family Texas bbq. A must stop if driving through. We got here at 2:00 and they were out of ribs. :(( But they had a couple left over from a catered event earlier in the day that that they gave us for free! Look, heres the facts: If youre driving on I-20 and you dont stop at Pody's while theyre open you messed up BIG time. yeah the prices are a little high but I would pay double if I had to for their food. I crave that stuff when im not in town. They have a $7 lunch special but if youre taking the time while passing thru the one-horse town of Pecos Texas, go for the 1, 2, or 3 meat plate, you wont be sorry. Don't miss this one !!! Drove thru on the way to El Paso and stopped in. Big crowd around lunch but it wasn't a problem. I ate too much and wow am I so glad I did. Happy workers, happy customers. Not really a huge fan of pulled pork generally- am a HUGE fan of the pulled pork here. Don't know how they do it. It's really, really fresh and top quality meats. Real top quality. The very best BBQ I've ever had. Ate the brisket. To die for. To top it all off, we showed up at 7pm to eat here on our drive from Dallas TX moving out to LA. It was closed, but Isreal, the owner, was in smoking meats for the next day. He greeted us and we told him our story. Then before we could leave the parking lot, he offered us brisket sandwiches on the house!!! Brought us into the restaurant to eat. Gave us drinks and we talked BBQ. Great Brisket and green chili hominy, well worth the trip. Only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because of the long wait time for food and the customer service was horrible! Lady taking my order acted very rude and like she was doing me a favor by taking my order and rolling her eyes at my questions of what she recommends. Then After I asked another question she went to the back to do something else and left me and my friend to wait a whole ten mins! Then someone else took our order. Other then that the food was good, but like all of Pecos don't expect any real good customer service when it comes to food service.
