Well all I can say is it's not the same Pody's as it was last time I ate here a few years ago. I ordered the one meat plate; The brisket was overcooked, dry and bland. I had to drown it in BBQ sauce. The potato salad was too sweet as if they got heavy handed with the sugar. The "pinto beans" were actually refried beans that were dried out. And to top off my dining experience the lady preparing the plates had a bad cough and was not making an attempt to cover her mouth or even turn her face away from making the plates. Quite possibly the best BBQ I've ever had. I've eaten here a few times but decided to share some photos. I ordered the lean brisket and the smoked Turkey. That brisket was soft and not overly smoked. Another Texas BBQ I discovered, this time in the Permian Basin about 80 miles Southwest of Midland and three hours East of El Paso. Super nice people running the place. They close when they sell out and that is pretty much daily. I woukd suggest coming as soon as they open. Brisket and Big Red-One of my favorite meals! Same is true here. Green beans and some grits on the side please. You know it's Texas BBQ, not just by the big red, but also by the slice of wonder bread. Pulled Pork was good and so was the smoked Turkey. All prepared perfect with flavors that were not covered with sauces or rubs. It was obvious they started with a great piece of meat and cooked it perfectly. You can tell walking in that this is a locals joint, and I absolutely love that (considering we drove in from Dallas on our way to New Mexico). Everybody knew everybody and it just felt warm and welcoming! I definitely agree Pody's deserves a spot on Texas Monthly's Top 50. The bark on my brisket was worth the drive alone! My ribs were super meaty but fell off the bone a little too easily if I was being picky. The sausage was sausage. Not really unique but good enough to serve out. The pulled pork was very interesting. The flavor was absolutely divine but it was really really wet, but it wasn't sauces. It's a little hard to describe. But still really good regardless. And that famous spicy BBQ sauce was definitely a nice touch. But that green chili hominy that everyone raves about, yea that was super yummy. When you arrive and look at it your going to say is this the right place ? Take a deep breath and you will smell the smoke. They do a traditional Texas brisket with post oak or mesquite depending on the day. The brisket is fantastic and so is the jalapeño cheddar sausage. It is a small place with limited seating but I'm guessing the person taking the orders slows down just enough so it magically works out that a table always seems to come open when needed. Definitely a cool old west BBQ joint feel. Everything on the menu looked amazing but we decided to go for the Mac Daddy. First off, the amount of food was astounding. If you need to feed a family of four for $15, this is the meal forecast you. And it comes with 2 drinks! Even though we indicated brisket as the meat it came with brisket, pork, and sausage, all of which were delicious. There had to be well over a pound and a half of meat on there. The mac-n-cheese was good and the curly fries were cooked and seasoned very well. They even snuck a few slices of potato at the very bottom. Generous amount of sour cream and shredded cheddar on top as well. We were on the road and took the leftovers to go and heated them up in the hotel microwave and they were incredible even then. The pictures just don't do it justice. We didn't put any sauce on it because it was so amazing plain. Just about the best BBQ I have ever had. I sometimes describe something as being "as big as a baby's head". I hope I never meat a baby with a head this big. Short & Sweet- if you're near Pecos, Pody's is worth the effort. The long version - Pody's designation as one of Texas's best BBQ joints is well deserved. The nondescript building seems typical for remarkable off-the-beaten-path BBQ. I sampled brisket, turkey, and pork ribs. The brisket was tender and well flavored. Smoked turkey breast can be dry, but Pody's was juicy and delicious. Pork ribs were fall-apart tender. Everything had a nice flavor, mildly smoky and perfectly seasoned. Three sides were chosen. Green Chili Hominy - this is a recipe I'll try to recreate! White hominy in a cheesy béchamel sauce with mild green chilis; should've ordered a double. The brisket beans did not stand out. Mac & cheese was average and a bit runny. Pody's did not disappoint for the hype. I've heard of them since 2018 when I was working in Odessa. There are a few neat things in Pecos, a rodeo museum, antique car museum, Pecos Bill memorabilia, artsy western boots, and the west of the pecos museum. I give Pody's five stars for the overall West Texas BBQ experience. Continue further for the full story. If you are looking for possibly the best BBQ West of Ft. Worth, set in a typical West Texas town, frequented by cowboys, oil field workers, and folks that know great food, then Pody's is what you are looking for. Nothing fancy, nothing pretentious and no uppity franchise cookie cutter food. This here is a West Texas BBQ "Joint" and well worth your visit. My wife and I arrived shortly after the lunch rush on a Wednesday afternoon. The restaurant was still about 1/3rd full at 1:30 pm, 30 min before closing. Very informal seating with even a picnic table off to one side. The restaurant is on a busy street but easy to miss, no fancy sign, polished facade or parking lot. Keep your eyes open! After a short review of the menu, a standard BBQ restaurant selection of BBQ sandwiches, various meat plates and sides, we settled on a one meat plate (Sliced Brisket) with potato salad and pinto beans. After a short wait our number was called and I went to pick up our plate. My first thought was the cardboard plate would not hold up to all the food piled on it. There were 2 - 1/2 inch THICK full slices of brisket that ran from one side of the plate to the other. Plus a full scoop of potato salad, a generous portion of beans, 2 thick slices of bread and a load of sliced onion, pickles and jalapeños. We sat down to possibly the best BBQ we have tasted in the last 20 years in Texas. The meat was wonderfully smokey and tender. Who needs a knife with BBQ like this? Sauce was on the table but we paid it little attention. I'm almost sorry I tried it when I did because it was incredible, but not really needed. The meat was that good. I wonder if I can take some sauce home to pour over my pancakes in the morning? My wife loved the potato salad and I loved the beans. The supplied vegetables were a good addition too. Although we didn't try their monster sized loaded baked potato topped (loaded) with chopped brisket, we promised ourselves another visit to do so, IF we can manage to pass up the BBQ. I exited the highway in Pecos, TX for one reason - to get some chicken and pork tamales from La Norteña. On discovering that La Norteña was closed upon my arrival, I immediately turned my attention to finding another (hopefully) nearby eatery worthy of a delay in my travel. Pody's BBQ and its 4.5 star rating quickly caught my attention (as did Jared K's glowing review). And the best part was that Pody's was literally only like a mile away! This is what I was looking for. This is a genuine Texas barbecue joint with some of the best brisket I have ever had. The place just drips with local tradition. We did not find a lot in of places in the Midland Odessa area and none as well rated as Pody's, so we made this a lunch drive and it was well worth it. The sliced brisket was exceptional, perfectly done and still very moist, even glistening. (see the photos). It had a very good dark smoky bark and a perfect fat rind. It needed nothing, no bread and for God's sake, no sauce. This is the reason I go to Texas and for all of the barbecue places opening in St Louis and for all of the older ones, no one there has a clue how to do this. No one even comes close. There was a constant stream of people coming in and ordering. A lot of it was carried out. I'm glad we were early, because I would have been devastated if they ran out. Another nice thing was that when Ms T ordered her pulled pork sandwich, she received the best pulled pork I have ever had. I exclude Eastern NC style chopped pork in this comparison, they are different things. Again, people in St Louis need to come here for lessons because nothing there comes close to this though it is common and available everywhere. This was very moist and smoky in reasonably fine shreds, easy to eat. No big, dry, stale hunks and the sauce was not overdone. Wonderful stuff for those of you who don't want brisket. My green bean side with some onion was normal, but the chile cheese hominy is good. We will have to make this at home. It had had slight heat and good cheddary flavor, but you can still taste the corn. The stunner in this meal is that it was $4 less than the meal we had the previous evening at Burgers Fries and Cherry Pies in Midland. I don't even know how to explain the difference in quality, quantity and the experience for less money. We drove from Houston on a Texas BBQ road trip. This place must be one of the greatest spot so far. The brisket was flavorful, and the smokiness on the meat was aromatic. Same with the pork ribs. The textures was just right, it's not overly tender, and the smoke flavor stay in your mouth forever! The pulled pork flavor has very balanced taste, and if you want to kick it up a notch, add the tangy bbq sauce. The only disappointment was that we didn't get to taste the moist brisket cut! We yelped local favorite and saw that Pody's was highly recommended. We got there at 2:30pm and they close at 3. Luckily they still had plenty of brisket and sausage, so we both tried the 2 meat plate and both were on point. The brisket was tender, slight Smokey flavor and paired well with the bbq sauce. The sausage was quite unique with cheese and peppers inside. It had a great snap and was delicious. The sides were ok too. I had beans that were, well, just beans with a small amount of brisket mixed in and coleslaw which was very good. My son got potato salad and corn and ate every bit of both. I love this place! Great hospitality, low prices, home made sides and great banana pudding. I tried the 3 meat platter with two sides and couldn't finish it. The brisket was tasty, a little dry. The pork ribs were similarly delicious but a little tough. The sausage was very good. I liked how the sauce complemented the Q. The smoke was pronounced and I liked the rubs. Typical TX BBQ like you'd get in the Austin area. The beans were beans thankfully and not the stupidly overdone version you get at most places.
