I have been waiting to write this post because the people at this business upset me and my son so much. I brought in an owl that got hit at night because it flew into the windshield and I didn't know where to take it. People suggested that I take him to a local vet so I brought him to this vet. They said that his leg was so shattered that he wouldn't be able to use it again and that they were going to have to put him down all because of his leg. There was NOTHING ELSE WRONG WITH HIM! He was BEAUTIFUL and had the kindest eyes. There were many other options of places I could have taken him, just not in my immediate area... but they were not going to let me have him back. I even said that I would take care of him. I had promised him all night long that if he made it through the night I would find somebody to help him. I regret bringing him to these people who are supposed to love animals and help them and all because I didn't have money they put him down. It didn't seem like the actual veterinarian had any care in the world about it; he didn't seem at all empathetic. My son even swears he saw the very smile when he said they were going to put him down ..One of the people that was there helping him was very rude as well. I will NEVER take any animal here and I don't suggest anybody else does either. It just seemed so cold and they flat out didn't care. Me and my son were crying as we were leaving and I wish every day I had made them give me the owl back so that he could have lived. UPDATE: Since this horrible occurrence, it has come to light that they have done this with other people and their animals. I actually spoke with some one who brought her dog in and they took one look at him and said he needed to be put down! Well thank GOODNESS she was much wiser than me and told them no way and took him to another vet. The other vet gave her dog antibiotics along with follow up care and he lived another FOUR YEARS! I'v been bringing an assortment of cats to Dr. Shaefer for over the last three years. Two elderly cats - one since past - which he has been amazing with. Recommendations on how to keep them healthy as possible and happy. Two adolescents and a ride-a-long from under the car kitten who had a bad respiratory problem when we first got him. With all five cats he's been great. And I would recommend him to anyone in the area - I prefer him to the vet in Quincy (about the same distance from my house). Regarding the review from the person who moved recently to Grizzly Ranch. The main front desk staffer can come across as short, but she has been nothing but helpful and understanding with me. Even remembers which cats are mine if I haven't been there in a bit and call up. It's likely a case of personalities clashing. I would also consider looking at the other reviews when someone gives such a review - primarily 1*s - so there is a pattern. read more

Dr. Schafer is the best. He took good care of my dog for over 15 years. She had a wonderful healthy life with his care and our love and care. I will always be so grateful for the staff there that always treated our girl so good. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again if we ever got another dog! read more

At the beginning of the summer I noticed signs of intruders and break ins on my property, I started staying up later with my dog outside and found a constant threat. My dog began bringing treats from the the fence to the porch that I had not given her. She soon began acting in ways that made me believe she had been tranquilized when she started coming upon these intruders more often. After she spent two days laying in bed not wagging her tail or picking her head up I called DR. Shaffer's office requesting a toxicology evaluation. Being ignored by a veterinarian that has been the sole doctor for the family pets since my grandmother was still youthful wasn't very converting. Last night my dog fought a raccoon I immediately went online to find his opening he's and found nothing. Calling his office this morning he was reluctant to give my dog healthcare. Upon paying for the recommended booster shot I said "I was disappointed that I didn't get a call back about the issue a month back." Apparently he is under the impression that I feed my dog marijuana. My dog is well trained and only given the healthiest food for her breed. She has character and independence that if offered she will show you she is better than that!!! Dr. Shaffer is a rude disrespectful piece of garbage that owes the entire Plumas county residents more than an apology. He should be ashamed of himself after seeing my baby Jade for 4 yes to think I am that kind of trash that would drug my own family. read more

Dr. Schafer has been our Vet since he came into the area servicing our horses and small critters back in the day. He is honest, takes his time with you and has been there for us through just check ups, shots, and the bad times. At one time one of my old Boxer's who was in declining health suddenly reached the point he was in so much distress that on a Saturday Dr. Schafer came to put him to rest as there wasn't an alternative. A friend of mine said he would rather go to Dr. Schafer for answers than his family Physician and I hold him in such high regard that I told him if he retires, I would quit having pets. I called today to have my dog's allergy prescription refilled and to make an appointment to have a skin problem treated and was rudely told by the receptionist that they are out of his medication and the earliest appointment they could give me was three weeks away. Also, I was not given a time frame as to when the prescription could be filled but was told that they are having problems receiving supplies and they would call me when it came in. I said this wouldn't work as my dog is suffering from severe skin allergies and all the receptionist could say was "I'm sorry you're not happy". It's not a matter of me being happy so much as getting my dog treated in a reasonable time without having to wait three weeks for a simple examination for a hot spot, and, who knows how long for a common prescription to be filled. This veterinary clinic is woefully lacking in customer service and their ability to take care of their patient's needs in a timely manner. Fortunately I was able to get an appointment for next week with American Valley Animal Hospital in Quincy and can pick up the prescription as soon as tomorrow morning. For anyone looking for a veterinary service that is capable of attending to your pet's health needs in a reasonable time as well as supply the necessary medications when you need them, I would not recommend Plumas Veterinary Service. read more

I am writing 2 months after my puppy has died. I needed the support and the aquaintance of Dr. Schaffer initially when we bought a wonderful, healthy CBR pup. Since this vet was so close to our home only 7 miles down the mountain I thought it would be fully rounded to not only meet our new veterinarian, but also our neighbor. We needed to meet Dr. Schaffer for we own many, many acres and there is noone nearby, except for the beautiful cougars, bear and Lassen wolves, we love and embrace them. On two separate accounts the front receptionist was extremely, -beyond comprehension- impudent, impolite and unwelcoming. On my last call with a plea and begging for help to save our pup, named Millipond Medows Beckwourth Genesee Crocker in honor of the history in our region, this female individual denied us the courtesy, kindness, nurturing acceptance to see Dr. Schafffer that day in order to help me save our pup. All she said was "Reno" the tone in her voice was cruel and dead. My puppy died that night. Part of me blames this woman, I begged her "please, mam i beg you i need help, please." "RENO" was her response, this is not in the least about Dr. Schaffer, I only wanted to meet him as neighbor, kind person with a new puppy we adored. I find that this woman was a road block to Dr. Schaffer, she must have been under duress and like any nasty mare or yard dog bitch was snarling with her teeth bared in order to protect her turf from any new dogs in the neighborhood. Which further leads me to believe this particular front desk female has received poor training and needs to be removed from the cyclone gate. read more

Wanted to respond to "Jerilyn of Reno". Your review was of the administrative staff and NOT about Dr. Schafer's talents, experience, and knowledge. The gent is brilliant and when we lived in the Bay Area and visited Graeagle, we decided to see him as much as we could vs. our vet in the Bay Area (who was fully capable, but had 50 pets a day). We just moved to Grizzly Ranch as a full time resident and I called them in Feb upon arrival about getting our Aussie in to establish with them. The receptionist is the rudest person ever, and coming from me says something. So then I had to meet my dad there in March to have his dog put down and the receptionist wasn't there and they were all so nice. Then I called back this week and that rude witch answered the phone again and turned me away. We now take our dog to Reno for her care. What is the point to claim to service our area when you force us out of the area and your so freakin rude I wouldn't come there anyway. Maybe I should invest on getting another vet established in our area that loves pets and there owners. Being a vet in a area small like this should be a joy and she should want to be nice to everyone. She is so rude I am not sure why she has a job, must be related to the dr. Dr. Shafer is one of the best small animal vets we have dealt with! Recently while visiting my parents in Portola from SoCal, our 8 year old Cardigan Corgi started making hacking choking sounds. We immediately thought she had swallowed something. Usually she coughs it up.. But no go this time. By the next morning she was depressed and was trying to hide. We knew something was seriously wrong. We called Dr. Shafer at 8 am and got an appointment for 9:30... Monday's are always busy. We got to see him in 20 minutes. He spent quite awhile with us asking many questions, trying to find out what may be causing her to gag. He was very caring and very much engaged with us. We felt that he was really focused on us and our pup. We all agreed that an xray may help. He took her into the xray room, and 10 minutes later showed us the result. It was a sewing needle! It was stuck just behind her tongue. Needless to say, we were horrified! Dr. Shafer reassured us and said he could sedate her and work on her within an hour. He sent us home to wait for his call. We fully expected to put in a long afternoon. His nurse said she would call as soon as the operation was over. She called about 45 minutes later and told us the operation was over and that it was successful! Apparently the thread was still attached which allowed him to remove it, needing only a small incision. He told us later that just as he removed it, the eye of the needle broke off! What a miracle! One can only imagine if he didn't have the thread and had to surgically remove it... He kept our pup for 4 more hours to make sure that She was recovering ok. I can't say enough about how caring Dr. Shafer and his staff were toward us, even though we were out of town. And the total bill was surprisingly low! Thank you Dr. Shafer for turning our nightmare vacation into a celebration! read more

I have been going to this vet for years and always have had so-so service. But while trying to make an appointment received the worst service from the worst receptionist on the planet and will now go somewhere else for my animals needs.
