I drove 3 hours from Sac to come here because of the great dogs they have, the mission of the non-profit, and the friendliness of the staff who actually wanted to adopt out the dogs! After spending weeks looking at the shelter and rescue pages of the groups in my immediate area, I settle on HSAR because it felt like those dogs needed it a little more and for the aforementioned reasons. $100 adoption fee + $100 deposit (refundable after obedience training is complete). Puppy package was great and they even have weird little country events throughout the year (Perfectly Portola). Can't speak highly enough of this group. Check out their dogs on the site if you are looking to break out an inmate.

Novalee replied to my email promptly and continued to answer all my questions over the next few days. She was extremely patient and friendly throughout the entire process and never made me feel incompetent or inferior because I had never owned a cat or kitten before. I really liked that Blossom did not have me fill out endless paperwork without meeting my potential adoptee and were more focused on ensuring the fit between pet and human was ideal before moving forward. Although they are located in Grass Valley, CA, they regularly bring the animals to Santa Rosa, CA to meet with interested parties. The only reason I did not end up adopting through Blossom is because a local adoption fell through and Blossom encouraged me to check the local adoption first before making the 3 hour drive to Grass Valley. We had booked a private tour for his birthday to meet the rescue animals who call this beautiful place home. Yasmin met us at the entrance and, after swapping shoes for some solid boots, gave us a very honest, very real, and very important rundown of industrial agriculture. Now, I have to add, neither of us are vegan or even vegetarian, but Yasmin proved to be an actively non judgmental, compassionate host. She walked us through the grounds, addressing each animal by name, and was full of knowledge and insight! After the initial meet and greet, we were off! We hiked across the beautiful grounds and met tons of sheep (Jet loved my partner!) goats, and pigs; all of the animals roam freely, coming and going as they please. It was actually delightful how so many of the animals came up to say hi and hang out out of their own volition! We brought some grapes for the chickens and they LOVED them! But oh my god, the turkeys. Wow, just, two little friendly, fluffy orbs that floated around our party showing off while Yasmin gave us an informed and empathetic story about them. She did that at every habitat; letting us in, introducing us (by name!) to the boldest of the bunch, and explaining how they ended up at Animal Place. It was an entirely wonderful, enlightening experience. Also, fyi, turkeys are so soft. I cannot recommend this organization enough. 10/10, please give Conrad an extra treat for me!
