Chicken tiki masala is one of my favorite dish. When the owner Sam said if you like CTM, you should try my butter chicken. Well, I'm glad I did. Now I know why it was a special item on menu because it's special. It's flavorful and a ting of spiciness. It's smooth and creamy. It was very nice to go with naan but I like the long grain. You gotta have rice with it. It comes with a good portion of meat and decent sized of the creamy butter chicken sauce. Is it perfect? We had the most joyous , extraordinary experience here. This small, family owned business has been there for 27 years , but have almost been wiped out by Google's purchase of the business park , moving businesses out . Small, friendly, great falafel and hummus, limited hours. Went there for the first time this week, and as everybody else said, Sam and his wife are wonderful people. They're only open for lunch, M-Th, and almost all the seating's outside, but it's mid-day in Silicon Valley so that's reliable. I had the pleasure to get lunch at Plaza Deli Cafe on my visit to UserTesting. Sadly I won't be able to see Sam (the owner) on a daily basis, but my interaction with him was a memorable one that I highly recommend anyone who works nearby to try it out. Plaza Deli Cafe is nestled in a business complex that is being pretty much overtaken by UserTesting.com, but don't worry, there's plenty of parking and you'll be welcome with open arms. You have your standard sandwiches and salads as well as some Mediterranean fare. I opted for the special which was a turkey pesto with roasted red pepper panini. The place itself is fairly small with some seating outside. Well Sam is the owner and you'll see that he remembers everyone that steps into his store. If he's seen you at least once (and probably if you come often enough) will remember your name and what you typically order. He was quite nice and very amicable. My order came out fairly quick and it was tasty. The bread was nice and toasted like a panini should. The turkey moist and all the flavors were great! For a deli, it hit all the marks and Sam added the extra star. Yes it's a bit out of the way. I likely won't be coming back unless in the area and hankering a sandwich, but lucky to those who work in the complex and nearby as it's definitely a gem. read more

Stopped by here for a quick bite today. The owner is super nice and friendly (forgot his name though. There is a nice patio area with plenty of seating but there isn't much seating inside. Good prices, $6.95 for a half sandwich and half cup of warm italian wedding soup. The ingredients are fresh and the bread is soft. I've visited several sandwich shops around Mountain View and a lot of them does not carry sprouts so I'm so glad that this place does & doesn't even charge you extra to add it. This is a fantastic family-run cafe. They get most of their business from the neighboring tech companies in Mountain View. BUT the business is very much well deserved and not just due to their convenient location for a quick lunch. The must-have is the majadara (lentil) plate! Served on tuesdays and you can do a half ($5) or a whole plate. It comes with lentils topped with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and fried onions. Also included (even with the half plate) is a side of pita and pickles! I like to request a side of hummus to go along with the pita (I recommend doing this!). I've also tried a chicken shawarma wrap that was absolutely AMAZING! Seems like there is nothing you can go wrong with here. They've also always got a giant tray of brownies sitting near the register that are super super tempting - although I've never caved. Sam and his family are the sweetest and truly care about their customers and making sure you get good food in your belly. Granted, I have not tried all their subs and specialties. All I know is that it's a solid deli for locals. Service here is fast, friendly and helpful. I'm not sure how one would eat here when the weather doesn't cooperate, but it's still worth a pit stop if you're nearby with a craving. If you come here enough, you don't even call this place "Plaza Deli Cafe," you call it "Sam's." Sam's menu is simple breakfast and lunch items. The best is their specials, and till this day my favorite is Tikka Masala with Naan and rice. My admin loves their soup. My boss loves their sandwiches. And my manager loves more than half of the menu. They get fresh bread and bagel delivered to them, so you don't ever have to worry about having something a day old or stale. Its not just also the food, its about how Sam treats you and his wife who is his cook. Her dishes are made with love. You can definitely taste the difference between restaurant food and her home cooked food. And Sam takes the time to know your name and remembers what you like to the best he could. The most unusual aspect of Plaza Deli café is its location: hidden away in the middle of a small, quaint office complex, within spitting distance of a Hwy 101 off ramp. Otherwise it's a pretty standard-looking deli with friendly service. Since my choice is typically not to eat sandwiches, there aren't a lot of options for me here, but no points off for that. And they do have some Mediterranean items that are worth a visit: -- Falafel sandwich: ($5.95) For a place that doesn't make their falafel fresh to order, they do a decent job; I think it's because they use good quality pita, fresh veggies and plenty of homemade yogurt sauce. (An overabundance of pickles doesn't hurt either). Still, I give it only 6 out of 10 on the falafel scale. -- Majadara: ($7.45) Tuesdays only; people seem to make a special trip for this dish, and I can see why. Savory lentils and rice smothered in fresh herbs, tomatoes and cucumber. This version was milder flavored than I've had before, but the caramelized, grilled onions on top MADE the dish for me. Killer stuff. I'll be back again and again for this. 4 stars easy. Based on my meals here so far, Plaza Deli Café is maybe 3.5 stars overall. But the unique setting, complete with Japanese garden courtyards and burbling fountains, provides an unexpected benefit: a sense of privacy and escape. The sandwiches were fabulous and the level of service was unheard of for a mom and pop shop, or most restaurants for that matter. The freshly baked Dutch Crunch bread hugging my tender roast beef sando was amazing. The flavor-packed tomatoes were drip-down-your-chin juicy. This cute little deli is totes amaze compared to any Subway or Togo's. We ordered the Plaza Club, Avocado Delight and Hot Roast Beef and Cheese. We weren't aware of the cash only policy, but Sam, the owner, generously offered to let us figure out the payment after the meal. After the sandwiches were made and his wife came by to drop off our order, she didn't mention anything about the money. We were able to enjoy our sandwiches without the pit-in-stomach burden of debt looming over us. However, after grinding on those yummy sandos, we got some cash to settle our bill. Look for the "Plaza Deli" sign on the street. We would have missed the driveway otherwise. There's another sign in the parking lot too, which helped us to select one of the parking spots nearest the deli. We'll definitely be back for more sandwiches! I'm happy to be updating my review for Plaza Deli. Sam reached out to me when he saw my review and apologized for my experience. I was pleasantly surprised because I was not expecting that. He asked me to come in again when he was there (his mom was there the day I went) to meet him and his wife, Jouhaina. I brought my same friend who came with me the first time and Sam immediately recognized me as I walked in. He introduced himself and Jouhaina and also introduced me to some of his regulars as the girl who gave him a bad review. He really has a great sense of humor. :) I ordered their Mediterranean panini which was delicious (and definitely a panini!). Jouhaina gave me some pepperoncinis to add to it (which I never used to care for), but she was right, the combination was so good! I even stopped by the store on my way home to buy some. ;) I also tried their broccoli salad, and whatever they put in there for the dressing was amazing. Sam also had me try their mocha and that was delicious too! Sam came to have lunch with us and we chatted for a while. I told him I felt bad for the initial review, but after working in customer service for so long, this is so important to me. We talked and I learned some of their history which I loved. From the moment I walked in, they were so friendly and it's obvious they care about their customers because Sam knew everyone by name. Or people would run in and he would tell them: "your order is waiting for you". He explained that he vouches that his mom didn't understand that I asked for a panini, since I was given a hot sandwich. Makes sense now. And she's not usually there either. He even told me that since I don't like parsley, I can call him a day ahead to ask him to save some Majadara without the parsley so I can try it that way. I was floored - this is exactly the kind of service I love and had read about. Now I'm no longer the girl who gave them a bad review - I'm now a fan of Plaza Deli and plan to come back! read more

Oh, how I love the Plaza Deli Cafe (aka Sam's). This is exactly what the east side of 101 N in Mountain View/Palo Alto needs: a local cafe with an excellent selection of sandwiches, salads and side salads, coffee drinks, etc. PDC is one of the few places around here that serves up an East Coast/Jewish deli-style pastrami on toasted rye, but you can also enjoy your California favorites here, too; there are plenty of sandwich selections featuring turkey/avocado/bacon. The ingredients here are of good to great quality, and, as mentioned above, you'll find enough variety -- American, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern influences -- to go with a personal favorite or try something new. The price is always right, and the service is top-notch; Sam and his crew know how to put smiles on new and returning customers. By the way, kudos to the vegan cookies they carry (from a Sacramento bakery). I love this place and could easily eat here every day without it getting old. read more

The guy at the cash wrap is top notch. I've never experienced a more friendly and personable restaurant owner since my last job. He remembers names, orders, faces and conversations. Since customers of this place are probably from the companies surrounding the complex, people may not even know it exists. Luckily for me, it's just across the street from where I work so if I forget lunch I can rely on Plaza Deli Cafe to feed me at the noonish hour. It's only a hop skip and a jump away. I usually get a sandwich but there are fresh fruit plates and salad combos with fresh soup. They also make coffee drinks. They are really fast making everything but keep in mind they get really really busy at lunch. Sometimes I'd walk in and be the second one in line and then wazam! there's a huge line when I turn around. The bathroom is really clean too. Oh, CASH ONLY. There is an ATM in the restaurant, but like all other ATMs there's a charge to take $$ out. Plenty of seating outside if you want to sit next to working stiffs and the like. read more

I work upstairs from the Plaza Deli in the office complex, which means I go here four or more times per week. I must say, the main attraction is the people who run this fine establishment: yes, the food is awesome, but it takes more than great food to make me go back to a place pretty much on a daily basis. People visit from miles around on Tuesdays for the majadara, and the daily panini selection is another fine, fine choice. So are the shawarma wraps on the days they're available. My co-workers are incredibly boring and usually opt for the hot roast beef and cheese. But it's good, too, so I can hardly blame them. Sam - the proprietor - and his family run this operation with their hearts and souls, though, and it totally shows. He knows everybody by name and takes a moment to actually give his patrons real service instead of just exchanging money for food. I've been here twice for lunch during the week and although it's a bit tucked away among office buildings, it's been a great find. I've had their falafel sandwich and another sandwich that had grilled chicken. Both were really quite fresh and perfect for a light but satisfying meal. What really stood out to me about this place though, is the owner. He is super chill, amiable, and cheerful. And he remembered me from the first time I came, which was probably more than a month before. The food is already good, but it's the people that really make you feel good when you come. The owner and his whole crew were very friendly, attentive, personable, and geniunely seemed like that enjoyed working and serving their customers. They have a nice little patio area where you can eat there, they bring the food to your table, and the tv was outside for their customers to watch the soccer game. I tried the Falafel Sandwich on my lunch break based on all the reviews and tips for this place. I had high hopes but I was a little disappointed with it. The sandwich comes in two pitas filled with tomato, lettuce, pickles, tahini, hummus and falafel. The falafel was microwaved and as I watched the lady microwave it, I noticed she placed the falafel directly inside the microwave without a dish or anything, which turned me off. It would have also been better if they baked or fried the falafel fresh instead of microwaving it. The rest of the ingredients in the sandwich felt lacking and the pita was dry and hard. Sam, is definitely a model neighborhood deli owner. He's really friendly and knows all his customers by their first names. After I ordered my sandwich, I was told by him that it was cash only but I could use the ATM that's to the side of the register. It doesn't make much sense to me why they force their customers use cash only, especially if they already use a computer system for entering orders, then logical thing would be to swallow the cost of accepting cards to please the customers. Instead of spending $6+tax on a sandwich, I ended up spending another $2+ for the ATM charge. Sam ended up offering me a chocolate brownie to make up for my ATM cost, which was nice of him, but I would have rather kept my money instead. Overall, I was underwhelmed by the sandwich and the cash only thing is difficult for me as well, so I probably won't be coming back. read more

A small deli in a nondescript office park on the corner of 101 and San Antonio Road gets one of the highest ratings on all of Yelp? How could it be? Mediterranean combination dishes, brownies, cookies, 6 kinds of chips, coffee, espresso drinks. Salads of every kind. Pie, cake, two or three specialty desserts. Always super fresh, great quality. Always ample servings. Pricing very fair. Only one problem, it gets very crowded around 12 noon. People come here from Google when they could get free lunch. The line goes out the door. But there is a lot of polite conversation going on, so the wait goes fast. If you don't like lines, come at a little early or late around the lunch hour. Lucky for them, Plaza Deli has awesome reviews on Yelp and some signage, both from the street and from the parking lot, which helps newbs find 'em. In case you haven't been here before, this cute little lunch spot is located right off 101 in the Bayside Business Plaza, which is technically on a frontage rd. If it's your first time visiting, follow the map instructions and keep an eye out for the big sign that reads "Plaza Deli" with an arrow pointing towards the shopping center. Once you've parked, head towards the offices and follow the sidewalk signs that lead you right to the little oasis that is Plaza Deli Cafe. The owner, Sam, made friends with my +1 while she waited for me. Sadly, I was running late and they were getting ready to close. He was kind enough to wait (I made it there before 2:30 pm!) and take our order right before the kitchen closed. That's 5-star service... I had a falafel sandwich with a bag o' chips and scarfed that puppy down within minutes. Waiting until 2:30 pm to eat lunch is never a good idea. Might I also add that there's no seating inside the deli; rather, a cute little outdoor patio with clean benches and trees for shade. A little oasis inside that makes you forget that you're inside a professional business park. Perfect for a lunch break! Friendly service, decent-sized portions and in an unassuming spot.
