    Sriracha Chicken Panini

Chicken tiki masala is one of my favorite dish. When the owner Sam said if you like CTM, you should try my butter chicken. Well, I'm glad I did. Now I know why it was a special item on menu because it's special. It's flavorful and a ting of spiciness. It's smooth and creamy. It was very nice to go with naan but I like the long grain. You gotta have rice with it. It comes with a good portion of meat and decent sized of the creamy butter chicken sauce. Is it perfect? No. For me, I prefer chicken thigh meat instead of breast and I prefer more onion. So good!

Must-try: any of their chicken sandwiches Why visit? A very kind owner greets you with a quant menu that should inspire you because you don't have many options to choose from Protip: try adding caramelized onions to any of the sandwiches

I had the pleasure to get lunch at Plaza Deli Cafe on my visit to UserTesting. Sadly I won't be able to see Sam (the owner) on a daily basis, but my interaction with him was a memorable one that I highly recommend anyone who works nearby to try it out. Plaza Deli Cafe is nestled in a business complex that is being pretty much overtaken by UserTesting.com, but don't worry, there's plenty of parking and you'll be welcome with open arms. You have your standard sandwiches and salads as well as some Mediterranean fare. I opted for the special which was a turkey pesto with roasted red pepper panini. The place itself is fairly small with some seating outside. Well Sam is the owner and you'll see that he remembers everyone that steps into his store. If he's seen you at least once (and probably if you come often enough) will remember your name and what you typically order. He was quite nice and very amicable. My order came out fairly quick and it was tasty. The bread was nice and toasted like a panini should. The turkey moist and all the flavors were great! For a deli, it hit all the marks and Sam added the extra star. Yes it's a bit out of the way. I likely won't be coming back unless in the area and hankering a sandwich, but lucky to those who work in the complex and nearby as it's definitely a gem.

Stopped by here for a quick bite today. The owner is super nice and friendly (forgot his name though. There is a nice patio area with plenty of seating but there isn't much seating inside. Good prices, $6.95 for a half sandwich and half cup of warm italian wedding soup. The ingredients are fresh and the bread is soft. I've visited several sandwich shops around Mountain View and a lot of them does not carry sprouts so I'm so glad that this place does & doesn't even charge you extra to add it. This will definitely be one of my go to places for lunch now. CASH or CHECK only.

Tuesday special - lentils! Half order

This is a fantastic family-run cafe. They get most of their business from the neighboring tech companies in Mountain View. BUT the business is very much well deserved and not just due to their convenient location for a quick lunch. The must-have is the majadara (lentil) plate! Served on tuesdays and you can do a half ($5) or a whole plate. It comes with lentils topped with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and fried onions. Also included (even with the half plate) is a side of pita and pickles! I like to request a side of hummus to go along with the pita (I recommend doing this!). I've also tried a chicken shawarma wrap that was absolutely AMAZING! Seems like there is nothing you can go wrong with here. They've also always got a giant tray of brownies sitting near the register that are super super tempting - although I've never caved. Sam and his family are the sweetest and truly care about their customers and making sure you get good food in your belly. I would definitely come back here if I was visiting a friend for lunch on the weekdays :)

This must be a local favorite for such high ratings. It's definitely a gem in this hidden plaza with a local flavor for good sandwiches and service. The sandwiches are tasty, but I've had better when it comes to the Plaza club or roast beef with cheese where the meats can be a bit more tender or thinly sliced. Granted, I have not tried all their subs and specialties. All I know is that it's a solid deli for locals. Service here is fast, friendly and helpful. Seating is outside under some trees with small tables and benches. I'm not sure how one would eat here when the weather doesn't cooperate, but it's still worth a pit stop if you're nearby with a craving. Parking is ample in the lot, but it is a bit of a maze to weave through buildings in order to find the deli.

If you come here enough, you don't even call this place "Plaza Deli Cafe," you call it "Sam's." Sam's menu is simple breakfast and lunch items. The best is their specials, and till this day my favorite is Tikka Masala with Naan and rice. My admin loves their soup. My boss loves their sandwiches. And my manager loves more than half of the menu. They get fresh bread and bagel delivered to them, so you don't ever have to worry about having something a day old or stale. Its not just also the food, its about how Sam treats you and his wife who is his cook. Her dishes are made with love. You can definitely taste the difference between restaurant food and her home cooked food. And Sam takes the time to know your name and remembers what you like to the best he could. And he see's a lot of people in this plaza so that is pretty amazing in itself.

Plaza deli cafe is once again open! I have been looking forward to coming back and it did not disappoint! Food is just as delicious! My favorite deli ever to say the least.

Majadara plate. Tuesdays only. (extremely rare Dan B. food pic. Someday to be collector's item)

The most unusual aspect of Plaza Deli café is its location: hidden away in the middle of a small, quaint office complex, within spitting distance of a Hwy 101 off ramp. Otherwise it's a pretty standard-looking deli with friendly service. Since my choice is typically not to eat sandwiches, there aren't a lot of options for me here, but no points off for that. And they do have some Mediterranean items that are worth a visit: -- Falafel sandwich: ($5.95) For a place that doesn't make their falafel fresh to order, they do a decent job; I think it's because they use good quality pita, fresh veggies and plenty of homemade yogurt sauce. (An overabundance of pickles doesn't hurt either). Still, I give it only 6 out of 10 on the falafel scale. -- Majadara: ($7.45) Tuesdays only; people seem to make a special trip for this dish, and I can see why. Savory lentils and rice smothered in fresh herbs, tomatoes and cucumber. This version was milder flavored than I've had before, but the caramelized, grilled onions on top MADE the dish for me. Killer stuff. I'll be back again and again for this. 4 stars easy. Based on my meals here so far, Plaza Deli Café is maybe 3.5 stars overall. But the unique setting, complete with Japanese garden courtyards and burbling fountains, provides an unexpected benefit: a sense of privacy and escape. I've appreciated the times I have spent here after lunch, in various quiet spots just chilling or reading. A small rating bump is justified.

We also tried the lemon pie and apple pie, which were both decent and made for a nice treat after our meal. Even though the food wasn't exactly what we were hoping for, I would definitely come back and try something different because the customer service and overall energy of the place were outstanding. I ordered the Godfather, which is supposed to be their specialty, and it was very disappointing. The meats seemed old, extremely fatty, and so chewy that I was unable to swallow them. Every meat on the sandwich was fatty, including the mortadella, which was unusually greasy and unlike anything I've seen before. The texture made the sandwich very unpleasant to eat. It also made me question whether the meats had been stored properly, though I can't say for sure. The bread was average and didn't seem very fresh either. Hence why I stopped here one warm late afternoon despite having lots of food options in this downtown-y area. The Godfather ($15ish/5*) When I first try a deli I will usually try their Italian combo. It's a classic sub I love but honestly I find it hard to find an above average one. I'm not sure if the art of making one has been lost, but within the last decade or so, I strike out more than I get hits. Usually the meat to bread to produce ratio is off. Sometimes the meats are too salty/poor quality. Other times the sauce/dressing flavor is off. I am so stoked that I found a legit one here. They use prosciutto, mortadella and salami here, all my faves. I hate when a place uses American ham/cheese on an Italian sub. And all the meats are of quality, not too salty at all. Provolone was the cheese, textbook. I chose a sourdough roll and even though requires a good amount of teeth strength to bite off a piece and to chew, it was pretty damn satisfying. The interior is soft yet chewy. They definitely use a solid bread company. The bites were what I consider to be classic Italian sub flavors. No curve balls like pesto, red peppers or strong mustard. Just quality meats with great textures, fresh produce dressed in oil n' vinegar so it taste like a good salad. And the kicker that pleasantly surprised me were chunks of marinated artichoke hearts so this made you feel like biting into an antipasto platter just in sandwich form. So Damn Solid. Italian Sausage Sandwich ($15ish/4*). Even though solid I didn't love this as much as the cold sub. They ask what type of sausage mild or hot Italian. Chose hot, no surprise. They said this will take longer to make, like about 10 minutes. I chose a regular sweet French roll for this. Not as chewy as the sourdough roll, much softer but still has body. I liked the flavors of warm marinara with their unique sausage, quite classic once again. But the sausage they use is super thick like twice as thick as a common Italian sausage link. They do split it so it covers the bread but that sausage is one of the firmest textures I've ever had for a sausage. Sausage by nature because of the grind usually bites easily. Not here, I had to bite so hard that the meat couldn't stay in the bread. I think the casing was unusually tough for some reason. I eventually peeled it off. Decent flavors but problematic to eat cleanly. $35+ (after T&T) for 2 sandwiches seems pricey but really it is the new reality. 10 years ago this would have been about $20ish. Welcome to the new world order. Lol
