Surprised how delicious the food at this restaurant was. We dined upstairs and the light Cajun salmon entree was cooked to perfection atop the mango salad. We also enjoyed the Grafton Street salad with Brie, cranberry, & walnuts with chicken breast. After the Broadway show the downstairs pub was busy & energized...but we appreciated the nice upstairs part of the restaurant where we could talk and enjoy our meal. Seems like a tradition that we come here after seeing a play. This place is close to the Imperial and Richard Rogers Theatre. We first came with our friends Debbie R and her family. A great Irish pub close to the theater where our show was. Perfect. Toni and I stopped in to fuel up before the show. I got an Irish mule and grilled shrimp appetizer. Toni got a gin fizz and bruschetta. Both of the appetizers were delicious. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and served with a corn relish that balanced the shrimp. The bruschetta were loaded with toppings. Toni used a fork and knife. I am an animal and unhinged my jaw to get my bites. The topping were fresh tasting and the bread toasted perfectly. The drinks were great. I never would have thought to make a mule with whiskey but dude- delicious. I don't like gin- Toni enjoyed her fizz. Walking around Time Square, my co worker and i were looking to get buzzed (just a little) and decided to try this place. The coconut shrimp was amazing! I really liked it and it paired up really well with my drink Mai Tai. The Nacho Fries were fantastic too! Every fry was crispy and was fried to perfection. Average casual midtown pub. My friends and I stopped in for happy hour on a Monday evening however they do not have happy hour specials. Prices are typical midtown drink prices. Wine glasses were $10/each and cocktails were $13-$15. We sat indoors at a corner table and felt safe and distanced from others. Luckily, they didn't make us order food to go with our drinks. The waitress was attentive and kept our glasses filled. Definitely pricey for what they offer; I felt like this was a place all the tourists go. I wouldn't go running back. read more

This is a really solid pub choice in the Times Square area. We came after seeing a show and there was plenty of seating. Service was quick and friendly. The drink selection was excellent, sex on the Hudson with blue curaçao tasted particularly great after seeing The Shark Is Broken. I tend to avoid touristy places, and avoided this place for years. I now see it was a mistake. Large, busy, Irish pub near the theater district with good solid food and drink. Really enjoyed the Celtic Salad, flatbread pizza and fish and chips. Beers are good, but I wish they had a larger draft selection. They showed the GGD-Canelo fight without a cover and even turned the music off for the duration, which was great. I'd love to come back. Kinda weird but I guess because of Di Blasio you can't enter a restaurant without a vaccine card. So we walked up three flights to go to the rooftop and it was beautiful open air and cool weather. I had quite a few of those while catching up with an old friend. I appreciated that the bartender was mindful not to check in too much...just enough to make sure we were sufficiently libated and fed. Later on in the evening I ordered a corned beef sandwich with fries. The sandwich was okay, but not the best I've had. Stopped in after living nearby for a couple years. Wasn't great. The first beer I ordered had that classic "bacteria" tap taste of butter. Gross, had to go for a bottled beer after. We ordered a club sandwich and a buffalo chicken wrap. My club sandwich was pretty miserable. Packaged wet turkey, old lettuce and old bacon. My wife enjoyed her wrap however. The bartenders were friendly and the atmosphere wasn't bad. But an Irish bar should have good taps and a decent club sandwich with fresh ingredients. This did not. Won't likely be back. read more

This was my first visit to Playwright Celtic Pub. It was a Saturday at 1:00pm before a play. There was no hostess so I took a seat at the bar. After 10 minutes of no service, I left and pondered going upstairs since there was still nobody around to ask. Eventually, someone came around who led me upstairs. I was a bit concerned about the time I lost since I had a 2pm deadline. Jose brought out my Bangers & Mash fairly quickly. I enjoyed my meal while listening to faint hints of dance music hidden behind the extremely noisy chatter and watching Mets news on television. My meal was much more succulent than I had expected. Went to this pub last night after a Broadway show. Got a good table. Ordered food and drinks. For some reason our waiter kept returning to say the kitchen was closing (it was after 11pm on a Friday but fair enough). He kept returning to take plates as we were eating. I had to grab back my dipping sauce. Then he reached over us to turn off the light directly over our table, despite other tables being occupied and the bar being full of people. We closed out our tab but still felt rushed out, and we weren't rude or loud. The website said the bar was open far later. I can never recommend this establishment due to this poor hospitality, and I work in the area on Broadway. Staff needs a retraining session STAT. Upsetting end to an otherwise wonderful evening out. read more

After a long day I thought it would be nice for my girlfriend and I to sit down and have a tasty Irish meal. When we first arrived I didn't realize the stumbling woman with a drink in her hand was the hostess and I almost ran in to her when trying to enter. We were seated upstairs in a nicely decorated room and ordered. I got the French onion soup she got the truffle fries. The French onion soup was everything I hoped it would be, very very tasty. The truffle fries on the other hand, well let's just say half a bottle of truffle fries and unmelted giant shavings of cheese on supermarket frozen fries is too much. The smell of truffle oil was so strong we had to ask them to take the fries away before continuing our meal due to the headache the smell was causing. The chicken pot pie I had to try because if you are gonna lend your restaurant's name to the food, it's gotta be good right? I was mistaken. While it was decent, it seemed like the puff pastry, which was pretty thick, seem to be just placed over the pot pie which was under seasoned and difficult to eat. My girlfriend had the winner however because the shepherd's pie was delicious. Top top it all off, even though we were a party of two, they automatically added a $15 gratuity with no notice and still expected a tip. With so many places to eat near Time Square, there are better ways to spend 109 dollars. My advice, go elsewhere. read more

My mom and I chose to go to Playwright Pub for a late lunch/early dinner before seeing a broadway show this past weekend. We showed up to where we thought we made the reservation, and were told that it was the wrong Playwright location and that the mistake happens all the time. When we finally got to the right restaurant (about a 5-10 minute walk away) we were again told that this is a common mistake - so I was surprised that the hostess didn't say something when I called earlier to make the reservation. Nevertheless, we sat on the top level and snagged a rooftop table. The rooftop is relatively small but it was a nice day to sit outside and hang out. Our waiter wasn't amazing, I think he was the only waiter up on our level but he seemed to be easily annoyed and bothered - not a great attitude. For an appetizer we ordered potato skins which came as an order of three. I thought this was a weird number for an appetizer and for $13 there should have been 4-6. For my main course I had a traditional burger with cheese and a side of fries. The burger was good - nothing amazing but I was happy that there was vinegar on the table to put on my fries! I didn't have an awful experience but the service and food was just average. Nothing specifically impressed me or made me want to come back. FYI - when you check in there is a Yelp offer for a $6 irish coffee in the month of December. read more

Great spot in a busy area. Three floors. I returned after enjoying crab cakes over salad to enjoy the brunch special pork cutlet. Second floor is best for dining,service is quick, bathroom is nearby. There's a rooftop area as well. The food is varied enough, and the brunch is a great deal for a lot of food, dessert is included, but I had no room left! A very nice experience. And the waitress remembered me! Recently returned after a matinee of the Irish play "The Ferryman!" Perfect choice! And it was just as good as last time. My friend was very happy with his bangers and mash, and I once again succumbed to my yearly treat of porterhouse pork chop! This time, I also ordered the beef stew to go and took my dessert, apple crumb cake, home! Excellent quality all around. The staff is very accommodating and although the first level is a typical crowded bar, there are two more levels upstairs that are comfortable for conversation and meals. That place was loud, really crowded, and the guy at the door practically had a conniption fit when I walked through looking to see if there were any open chairs at the bar. So, we went across the street to the Playwright Pub instead. Here is what we noticed: - We lucked out and found two seats at one of the bars on the second or third floor. The place is multistory, pretty quaint, touristy as you would expect, but it was nicely decorated for Christmas. - I ordered the Dandy Shandy (half Guinness and half Ginger Beer)...very interesting, and it grew on me over time. My wife had a Blue Moon on tap...overall, their tap menu was ok but nothing spectacular. Bottom line: We'd go back for the cozy, unique atmosphere....great place to enjoy a cold one! read more

This place has multiple levels to eat, drink and carry on.... very close to our hotel in the theatre district so we went. We ended up on the top floor and the bartender was delightful. We had so much fun with him. It is touristy, yes given the location but somehow it feels like your favorite dive bar/ neighborhood pub. I had a burger which was great, but wished I had explored the menu more as everything that came out looked more enticing and delicious than the dish before! Play Wright Celtic Pub is a great find. The shepherds pie is absolutely amazing and the hamburgers are cooked extremely well. You could tell it's a very high-quality food establishment. It is not your typical Irish pub. It is definitely on the upscale side of food being extremely well prepared and extremely tasty. No one really hassles you to order or to rush out of the place.
