My wife, two sons (16 yrs, 14 yrs), and I were delighted to see this gorgeous beach along Route 187. If you are driving from San Juan, this beach is easily accessible to PR-187 on the east end of Pinones after you pass Kiosko La Comay. It's the last major stretch of beach easily visible from PR-187 before the "bridge of flags" to Loiza.
On the plus side, it's a gorgeous beach with calm waves that are protected from the harsh waves of the ocean. Also, if you come on a weekday morning, it's not too crowded. At the center, you can find a very affordable beach umbrella rental ($8 per umbrella, $4 per chair). In addition, there's a rocky trail on the east side which leads to an outlook where people like to fish. It's very family friendly and parking is directly on the side of the road.
On the minus side, Playa Vacia Talega does not have public restroom facilities. Also, Pinones seems to have a fair amount of trash on the ground. A pro tip is to come here on a weekday morning. On a Friday morning at 10:30am, there were only a few families on the beach. But by 1:30pm, parking was more difficult to find. Well worth the drive from San Juan! read more
