We passed several inviting open air restaurants as we neared the beach and my only regret is not having time to stop for a bite! We parked on a grassy area across from the beach, which was convenient and I was thankful it was not full on this pretty Saturday afternoon. We crossed the busy street carefully with our coolers and trekked alongside the pavement until we saw people. This is definitely a family beach. Loud music and conversations emanated from beach blankets all over the sand. There were available spots, but not many. My favorite part of this beach was the small rock outcropping which held back the larger waves and made a shallow swimming area much like a calm swimming pool. Small groups were able to stand and enjoy the water without the need to struggle against the current. The beach was natural, so palm fronds and seaweed were scattered about, but it was also clean. Trash cans were lined up at regular intervals so there was no litter. Due to the proximity to the airport, planes took off frequently nearby. It was loud, but also cool to see the planes fly so close overhead. It was fun to spend an afternoon the same way that so many local residents spent their weekend days. Next time I'm stopping for food!

The beach and water are beautiful. The water was prettier than I expected and very warm, but the surf is choppy. The down side of this beach is many vendors walking to try and sell you their homemade foods (questionable), and everything requires cash only. Be prepared, but don't leave your items or bags on the chairs. Lots of trash left on the beach, even though we were told it was very clean. People smoking pot everywhere, so everywhere you are, you are down wind of it...doesn't make for a pleasant beach experience. Enjoy the views, because that's about all you will enjoy during your visit, although I did eat the best empanada I ever ate at a stand at the entrance of the beach for $3.50. At 4:30, The Beach Boys grab up your shade and lounger so you have to go find another place to sit, or just do yourself a favor and go to Playa Pinones, drive through the food area and just past you will find the most beautiful, private beach areas there and the best food. Skip Isla Verde.

The resort is a large, long rectangle with buildings running down each of the long sides, and a variety of pools going down the center. There are actually five different pools, all configured differently. All have shallow, wading areas for children, and one pool even has a zero entry section. One pool has a long, lazy river, another pool has a big slide. There are no hot tubs that we could find. All the pools have sunny areas and shady areas. However, each pool are has only two lounge chairs, so we brought our beach chairs each time. Each pool area does have a covered seating section with tables and chairs if you wanted to eat, and restrooms. At the top of the resort, near the guard gate, is a mini putt course, and tennis courts. At the far end of the resort, there was a large grassy field if you wanted to play soccer or something, a sand volleyball court, some basketball half-courts, and then the locked gate to the beach. You must have a key to access the beach. The beach is fairly nice, about 100 yards wide. There are lots of shady areas, and lots of sun. The water is fairly clear, only a few rocks but they are farther out so aren't really a problem. We stayed in a second floor condo. It had three bedrooms, and two baths. The baths are very small so I could see it being tight if you had six people staying in your condo. They have nice size kitchens, a dining area and then a TV area, plus a very nice outdoor patio. Every condo comes with assigned parking spaces. When you first check in, they put a wristband on you at the guard gate. You must wear the wristband the entire time you stay, which was a little annoying, but those are the rules. There is a convenience store and one or two restaurants right outside of the resort, but otherwise you will need to drive. Ralphs, a large grocery store, is a 10 to 15 minute drive to the east. You can get to the kiosk is in Luquillo in about 15 to 20 minutes, and can get to Fajardo in 30 to 40 minutes. From the resort to old San Juan, it is a 30 to 40 minute drive. We liked the resort a great deal, the landscaping is beautiful, the pools were great, and felt it was a great jumping off point to do a lot of sightseeing while in Puerto Rico. I would definitely recommend it if you were interested in staying on the east side of the island.
