I ordered my usual Nutella bowl, the interaction with the person taking my order was very awkward but I dont judge food based off customer service. When I received my bowl, Nutella drizzle on top was very slim, the strawberries tasted bland and was mushy, the actual açaí base tasted like water. Overall experience was poor. Having passed Playa Bowls numerous times, today we decided to stop in. We ordered the 8th Ave, macaroni and cheese and chocolate peanut butter protein bites. Prices seemed really steep. The young woman who was cashiering could be best described as indifferent. Between taking orders, she was enjoying a bowl of her own and perhaps just wanted to get back to it. Her ambivalence meant no smile, no greeting and no visible expression on her face. The macaroni and cheese was kept in large kettles, but since it's not a liquid, requires stirring every once in a while. Clearly no stirring had taken place, because in some spots the mac was fine, in others, hard and discolored. No bowls were available to scoop the goods into, so the ambivalent cashier was eventually convinced to replenish the supply. Walked down to get the acai bowl, which was filled completely and topped off with perfectly fresh banana. I didn't love the granola; it was on the sugary, simple side. I like chunkier, less cloying versions with acai. This tasted like it was straight out of the box--it might even be mass-produced Quaker Natural. But back to the bowl, the acai was perfect in taste and consistency. One thing that wasn't great--there was music (two kinds!!) BLASTING throughout the restaurant. My ears hurt! I asked one of the employees to lower the volume and he obliged. But it was still way too loud. Doesn't this chain set volume standards? I mean relative to music and sales ;-)? Also, the music selection was not family-friendly. Lyrics were explicit and the music was better suited to a Manhattan club. It did not fit in with the fun, beachy atmosphere the decor was trying to convince us of. Speaking of decor, they do a really good job here. Great theming. The one piece that doesn't work is bar stools with a low table. People needed to bend in half to eat. Someone didn't think that one through. Acai can be done so much better and I hope Playa Bowls considers some areas of improvement. read more

Came out tonight, since they were supposed to be open until 10 pm and the montclair one closes sooner. At 9:32 the door was locked! I wiggled the door back and forth which made significant noise but the guy inside didn't even look up. No hours were posted outside. Went to red mango instead since they were open. Simply the best place for Açai bowls in NJ. I was absolutely thrilled to hear that they were opening in Millburn. I've been to many locations, this one happens to be closest to my house. Something seems to have happened here recently that negatively affected the quality/quantity of the açaí bowls as well as the customer service. Orders are often wrong if there are modifications to the basic bowls and mistakes are made on the charge. I was told that the bowls are only to be filled up 1/2. When i put in a coupon for 10% discount of entire order, i was told that owner only grants it for one bowl!?! And when i bring these issues up, i am treated as the bad guy. i really like the bowls at other locations which is where i try to go now unless i have no time. Please get new management! read more

Just got a Nutella bowl. The staff was extremely rude and continually snickered and whispered. They did not call my name when the order was ready. They never greeted me or said have a good day or did anything be way of customer service. Though they had plenty of Açaí, my bowl was 70% granola, 10% açaí and the rest were toppings. I definitely will not be supporting this location in the future. Go somewhere else and avoid the low grade customer service. read more

After numerous recommendations from friends, I finally gave this place a try yesterday. Obsessed. I went back today and bought 2 bowls so I could have it for tomorrow. I had the green power bowl. It was delicious. The granola is very unique and adds a great taste and crunch. It was easy to order and the bowl took a bit of time to make but the amount of time is consistent with the duration at other smoothie bowl places. My last visit to the millburn location was very disappointing! I went in about 55 mins to closing, and I was not assisted for about 5 mins. The girls looked at me and looked away and allowed me to wait for 5 mins. After she took my order, she quickly made the base putting as minimal ingredients as possible. My bowl was missing ALOT of granola due to the fact that; she mainly put the watery base to fill up my bowl! My bowl was also lacking fruit, and nutella/almond butter! The attitudes of the ladies in there is very uncalled for. If you want good quality playa , I would not recommend the millburn location!! read more

While I appreciate the fun California vibe here at Playa bowls, they are so relaxed that it takes forever to pass the bowl down to the person who puts it in the bag. On this visit I waited 20 minutes for my order. I observed a bit of uncertainty in general, or was it extra care? There was only one party in front of me and perhaps there were phone orders but it would behoove them to speed up the production line. I used to love coming to this place, but now I think I'm done. They're too wishy washy with their items. Today I came and ordered my usual nutella bowl. I get to my car and the bowl is half full, the smoothie part is practically melted to liquid, and they only put enough fruit to cover HALF of the top. Meanwhile, I distinctly remember seeing an employee walking around with a full bowl (and she was eating with her gloves on between making bowls no less). CONSISTENCY is key. trust me when i say i've tried every smoothie bowl within a 5 mile radius of my house and this chain is by far my favorite. you get a hefty portion and there are so many options to choose from. you can even order ahead of time and pick it up in store. im a big fan of their green bowls and coconut bowls, but you can't go wrong with their classic açaí and pitaya bowls either. i'm very glad they opened up a location in millburn! read more

My kid loves the Nutella bowls from here so I have to come in once in a while. The bowls are good - fresh fruit etc. but that is what you should get for $11+. My issue is with the staff. They are never friendly and sometimes they are downright rude. They seem not to like what they do or are all chronically depressed. IDK. On my most recent trip it took almost 5 minutes for someone to come to the register to take my order. There was no "I'll be right with you" or anything. So I waited. Then - with only one other order being made for an in store client, I waited 17 minutes for them to make a Nutella bowl. I could see one staff member working to fill online orders (I guess) and not sure what the other one was doing. After I walked up to peek over the divider to see if my bowl was in progress (at the 15 minute point), she started on my order. Did she forget? I love this store!!! however I am seeing a lot of new faces, because they have a few new people the service has gotten a lot slower because of it. Seeing the other reviews talking about how fast or slow it takes has to deal whether its someone new or someone who has been there for a long period of time. This is my favorite store but its not exactly pocket friendly but that is not the staffs fault. The other day I came in to see a employee getting yelled at about the price of the bowls I felt bad for them because they are not the ones that make the prices. There is one person in particular that I look forward to seeing every time I come in, which is Nellie ( I don't know if i spelled her name correctly) she has been working at this location since the store has been opened, she was the first person to ever help me when I first came here. She is very knowledgeable when it comes to knowing what's best for different diets to knowing the products in the store. If you have any questions she is definitely the person to go to.
