Congratulations to Carolyn Levosky, owner of Play Time and her terrific staff on the 80th anniversary of Play Time. The store is an absolute treasure of a business founded by Carolyn's father in 1945. This independent and locally owned business has art and crafts supplies plus holiday and party items!

This place is unbelievable if you are into any type of crafts. There are tons of writing instruments, papers, stationary, puzzles, models, artist brushes, paints, canvases and that is just a smattering of the first floor inventory. Down stairs you will find ribbons, embellishments, beads, knitting & crochet supplies, jewelry making supplies, crystals for clothing & jewelry, containers, hand made paper, cookie cutters, kids craft kits and more. It would take the day to explore it all even though the space is not large. We drive 35 minutes to go to Play Time because it has what we need & what we didn't know we wanted!

A very fun shop, not a chain!! There is a lot to find here, more than your average art supply store!! The owner is very nice, too.

So expensive! The exact same items are a fraction of the price at Michael's or Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Harvard Square's Holiday Craft Fair isn't just a great place for those who live in Cambridge…read morebecause it is conveniently located right across from the T. Small but filled with unique, homemade local items, it's perfect for gifts for loved ones during the holidays or even treats for yourself. With so many creative, local artists gathered together, it's hard not to give the craft fair five stars. Yes, it's on the tinier size and it's in a cramped basement in an old church in Cambridge, but I don't think that detracts from the point of the fair: to encourage community spirit, to strengthen the local economy and to support locals in their business opportunities.

The fair is now both in the church basement, and in a few outside booths on street level in front of the church as well. It's at the corner of Church Street & Mass Ave, across the street from the Harvard Sq. MBTA stop. The vendors are varied, from clock & wind chime creators, to jewelry makers, glass artists, book makers, and even some jam purveyors. I had a great time browsing, and even found the perfect pair of earrings for a hard to shop for friend. (I usually get her a Christmas gift at the Bazaar Bizarre in Boston, but that craft fair isn't happening this year. Chain mail earrings from the Harvard Square Holiday Fair helped me fill the gift giving void.) I recommend stopping by if you're looking for gifts both for others and yourself.

If you've shopped at Beadworks or other Boston Bead stores, prepared to be completely overwhelmed…read more You have not seen a shop full of beads until you've seen this. I don't like every bead in the store, but this is by far the largest and most varied selection of beads that I have seen in a store in the Boston area. Strands of beads hang about six inches deep on every wall from floor to ceiling. Seed beads are in baskets on the floor. There is something in every color and almost every material including gemstones, wood, plastic, glass and metals with particular focus on strands of gemstones. Prices are reasonable for a brick-and-mortar store -- definitely more reasonable than other stores I have visited. The store is a little disorganized -- there is just no way to keep this much inventory straight -- and you'll need some patience to sort through it all, particularly since some of it is in baskets on the floor. A few focal pieces and completed pieces hold the prime real estate on a few display tables. This is a store for people who know what they are doing. They don't offer classes or a lot of advice. They will help you find an item if you know what you need and they will let you sit on the floor and design for hours and hours. If you go, dress comfortably and plan to spend some time.
