We spent a few hours of a rainy night here playing board games. It was $25 per person for 2 hours, and they will charge you if you stay overtime. I think this is very overpriced, considering even places in Manhattan that are nicer and have less tables/space charge way less (the ones I'm thinking of charge $15 for unlimited play or 3 hours in some cases). This price also does not include things like the golf simulator, bowling, etc. you have to go up several flights of stairs to get there, and it does seem kind of like a mildly grimy frathouse environment. Had a unfortunate experience while traveling long distance for a Lorcana set champs this past weekend. Was running late and called the store ahead of time about my eta, even offering to give a round 1 loss if I am holding up the store too long. When I got to the store, I learned I got dropped from the tournament to my disappointment. I get that I might of been holding up the tournament, but getting completely dropped from a tournament left a sour taste in my mouth. read more

Very disappointed with our experience at Play Hoboken. We prepaid $60 for a one-hour bowling lane for our kids (apparently $50 but if you pre book online it's an extra $10 for convenience), with little explanation on how anything worked. After spending nearly 20 minutes trying to figure it out ourselves while the kids got frustrated, we finally had to bring them to the front desk where staff. Honestly, the whole experience felt like we were in The Twilight Zone. I also tried to buy a bag of chips, but the staff couldn't figure their system out with another customer and told me to just take them and that they would come back to charge me later. Then they later accused me of not paying, which was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional when I stood there for 15 minutes trying to pay. To make matters worse, the next day we received an invoice for $125 completely out of nowhere with no explanation. The invoice was apparently for the arcade, for a group of five people, even though two of the adults didn't play anything at all. The only reason the kids were by the arcade was because the bowling that we paid for didn't work, Between the confusing setup, wasted time, and surprise charge, the whole experience felt like a rip off. read more

This place is so much fun. There are hundreds of board games, simulation golf, pinball machines, and many other games to keep you entertained. They also sell little snacks and it's byob. The staff here is super sweet and accommodating. It is also very affordable at $5/hr. Went with two friends and played monopoly for three hours. -75% of the arcade games do not work, however, they do not tell you that till you are there and have already bought the bundle. -candle pin bowling balls regularly get stuck or the machine needs to reboot. -Management will nickel and dime you for everything. Read fine print of any agreement you sign. Parents will get charged to watch their kids at a birthday party (which doubled the quote they provided). They also force you to buy their AWFUL pizza for $20, which is how they get you. -be careful if you are over your time limit too. Staff will physically run over and block small children from playing games. They have no problem making young children cry. I've hosted two events at this venue. In terms of value for the space and time, worth it. However, some things worth noting. The place is BYOB. Awesome. The place makes you buy food. That's fine! The food is actually pretty good and the soda is good (it's not Coke or Pepsi - it's some smaller brand). But if you decide to do a birthday party here I cannot stress this enough - don't get the cake. It's literally ShopRite cake with a 100% markup. Skip it. Otherwise, worth an event with friends. I don't come to Hoboken often (because the PATH smells funny), so I probably would not have visited this place if the pool halls in Manhattan were not closed due to COVID. The billiards setup at Play! Hoboken is excellent. They have a large number of Brunswick Gold Crown tables with well-maintained felt and the house cues have decent tips on them. The pricing is pretty reasonable. I think it is $15/pp per hour of $25/pp per day, so it is more geared toward pool junkies that want to play for a long time. There's a small food menu; whatever coffee they are brewing is pretty good, and the waitstaff was friendly. It's also BYOB. And a large open space that feels pretty safe from a pandemic perspective. I inquired about pool lessons on the way out and was later contacted by the owner, who came off a bit rude- not sure if it was sexism or just elitist gatekeeping nonsense. In any case, it made me feel unwelcome, so I won't be pursuing that here- Amsterdam Billiards has just reopened, anyway- but may come back in the future for general casual play. read more

My cousin brought me here a few weeks ago...what a pleasant surprise this turned out to be! Play! Hoboken is a mecca for games, and if you're bored on a week night or even a weekend...check this place out. There is something here for everyone, from board games (they have every board game you can think of here), to pool, to golf simulators. There is even a pro-golf shop, if you are interested in such a thing. Now, the hourly rates are different depending on what you're playing...but I assure it, the rates are very fair. You're capped at two hours I believe, and we spent a whole afternoon here just hanging out, playing board games. It was great. Not to mention, it's BYO! The staff was very friendly, and checked in on us often. I saw them cleaning after themselves and everyone had masks on. There was even a contact tracing sheet, which I appreciated. My one suggestion is this - there is a snack bar, where items are either toasted or air fried. If the food situation was expanded here, this place would be five stars in my book. Great for any age! People often ask me, "What makes Hoboken great?" Sure, we have a vibrant bar and restaurant scene, and our proximity to NYC is fantastic, but we also have niche businesses like "Play! Hoboken" which are hidden gems. Located in an industrial building, it's a bit of a throwback to the old days on NYC - when you would find hole-in-the-wall danceclubs or gaming cafes. I used to go to Neutral Ground which was one of the first gaming cafes in NYC - and Play! Hoboken reminds me of that. It's a HUGE space filled with various things to do - a gaming cafe for people who want to play board games, card games, or even organize a local Dungeons & Dragons meetup (the owner actually hires PROFESSIONAL DMs to lead campaigns!) You can play ping pong (tabletop tennis), foosball (this was just added), pool or even hit some golf balls in their golf bay simulators. They are even adding darts soon. They are a BYOB, so you can bring beer or wine - or call a local beer store and have it delivered. I called, and it was delivered in 10 minutes. On top of that they partnered up with a local restaurant (Rosticeria Da Gigi) to offer delivery if you are hungry. Plus, they have snacks to pick from - along with FREE popcorn. The confusing part about this place is the pricing. It is designed for limitless, daily play. It costs $5 to just get in the door. It's then $7 (games), $20 (ping pong), $20 (billiards) and $45 (golf) for unlimited play. A buddy from out of town and I played pool for a few hours, then we played some board games for 2 more hours. We spent about 5-6 hours there on a lazy Saturday, and spent $32 each ($5 (entry fee) plus $7 (board games) plus $20 (pool)). Some people get up in arms over the pricing. To me, this wasn't a big deal - I know some local pool halls that cost $9 per player per hour, for example. 3 hours of pool would cost $27. On top of that most pool halls have bars - and you can't BYOB. Also, have to say, that the customer service in this place was amazing. While playing pool and playing cards, I had the employees check in every once in a while asking if we wanted anything - even refilling our free popcorn and taking away our empty beer bottles. The ONLY knock i'd say (and its not worth removing a star) is the golf bays can be a bit loud. If someone is using a driver the sound of the ball hitting the club can be a bit off-putting - especially when you are just playing a board game and hearing: "WHACK! WHACK! WHACK!" when someone is driving the ball into the netting. Even with that minor issue, I think this was a lot of fun to add into my cycle of "things to do on a weekend". My friend and I hung out for 5-6 hours, then went out to dinner, had a few drinks and then went our separate ways. The whole night he kept saying, "Man, if I lived in Hoboken I would be here all the time". It was my first time at Play! Hoboken. I knew about it being open, but didn't realize how great it was. I definitely want to come back with more friends. It's a nice alternative from the everyday. read more

As a previous employee some might think there is a slight bias to what I have to say, but what I have to say is viable and should be equally represented. I left Play Hoboken due to the extremely poor and greedy management that works there. Mostly Ian R. The other owner, Max, was not someone I left with any ill-will towards and I personally enjoyed working with him. Play Hoboken was based on an "At-Will" contract, so they could fire someone without notice, and an employee could leave without notice. I left because of the horrible conditions and beyond toxic workplace. I told them I was leaving. While it wasn't 2-weeks, I was completely within my rights to do so. That happened back in June. Almost 6 months later since then, I wanted to sell MTG cards to them and because of me not giving 2-weeks, I've been refused service and the ability to just sell cards or enter the establishment. This place does not foster a positive atmosphere. It belittles and degrades the employees and so much more. There is a lot that can be said about this place that is not known to the public, but in all, I don't recommend people going there for business or employment. read more

Definitely a nice spot to have in the area. As an avid golfer, sometimes if the weather is bad or you just wanna practice it's nice to have a golf simulator around to hit some balls. This spot has a lot of potential. Let's start with the pros - golf simulators well spaced out and owner assisted quickly in setting up practice range then full round with ease (you can play hundreds of courses). Price is very reasonable depending on the time you come (I paid $20 for 90 minutes). It's BYOB so you can bring alcohol/beverages in and there's no fee. Staff come to you and ask if you'd like to order food/drinks (menu is small but gets the job done for the most part with snacks or small meals). Cons - The setup is a little clunky/feel it could be easier if there was a ball area instead of chasing down the balls once you run out (only had 5) and tee setup uses real tees (make sure you have small tees, as they only had large). Also had trouble flagging down the owner when the simulation froze, as he was walking around the area with a colleague (noticed me waiving him down but never came around again) thankfully it unfroze after about 3 minutes. Lastly, as mentioned the food menu is rather small. I feel this spot has a lot of potential and offering some more options could take it up a notch. Overall good spot and will be back! read more

I just had a terrible experience at Play Hoboken. This is my third time there and my third encounter with their manager. I must preface this note by stating that there is no sign placed up in the business that claims users of the virtual golf bays are responsible for any damages done to clubs. Nor did I have to sign a waiver prior to playing. Customer service is something every business should take seriously. After playing a round of virtual golf, the manager accused me of denting the head of one of his drivers. When I had arrived, they were short staffed, and the manager was busy with interviewing a new hire candidate. There's no way that the Manager had checked the clubs prior to giving them to me. We went back and forth for quite some time, very unprofessional. In the end, I had originally dropped my personal clubs off for a regripping service, but after how poorly done the new head on the driver was placed I doubt the quality of their gripping services. So, I asked for a refund on the gripping service, the manager refused to provide me with a refund for a service they did not provide. I don't recommend this venue to anyone. at all. I went for the golf simulators and found they are constantly breaking or "losing internet connection" according to the owner, who has a strange habit of hovering unnecessarily, except when you actually need him to fix the machines when he's nowhere to be found.
