I played in their Summer Friday night league, and it was set up as such: -12 teams, with 3 2V2 matches going on at the same time -If you're not playing, you choose 3 players from your team to be refs for the others -50 minutes, or 6 full innings-whatever comes first Beer in cans is allowed, which is fun. You actually have a "chug off" before each match to determine who gets to choose whether they want to kick or field first. There are also theme weeks, which can be pretty fun. Here's my beef with WAKA-despite their best efforts, I came to find that things sometimes go way too intense and people would become livid over calls...in an adult kickball league. Really?! There will always be someone screaming about a call the ref has made. When I was acting as "head ref" for the game and calling balls, strikes, and plays at the plate, I almost had to break up a fight (yes, really) when I called someone safe at home, the opposing team lost their s**t, and the other team fired back. You're also strangely ostracized if you don't go to Hayter's, the official after party bar, with the rest of the teams. That sounds weird, but it's weirdly true. Sorry, but if I'm worrying about fights breaking out over game of adult kickball, I'm not sure the league is all that great. I guess it is fun enough, though.

We held a charity volleyball tournament here, and overall I must say I'm impressed with the park. It's got two softball fields kitty corner from each other, so lots of grassy space in between if no one has reserved the softball fields. There are also two or three very nice sand volleyball courts in addition to a number of official baseball fields, (you know, with outfield fences and stuff) tennis courts and two large picnic shelters available for renting. My only beef, and this is a small one, is that the parking lot filled up since both shelters were rented out for the day and there were a number of other things going on at the park that day.

The Morey Neighborhood Center is a great little secret spot for anyone wanting to break a sweat…read morewithout breaking the bank. Basically, Morey Middle School has partnered with Denver's Parks and Recreation Department to allow neighborhood residents to use Morey's athletic facilities. And Morey has a lot more than you might expect, including two indoor gyms, an indoor running track, a weight room, locker facilities and even a pool. And all of these facilities can be used for only $3 a visit or $30 for 12 visits. I've been taking advantage of Morey's proximity to my apartment and have been visiting every Monday and Wednesday since January. I have only spent about $60 for basically six months worth of use (Even cheaper than Denver Parks and Rec passes.) Now, Morey does have some big caveats for the big gym Jimmies and Janies out there. The facilities are only available Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5-7:30PM. They are also closed if the school normally is, so during spring break and school holidays you're out of luck. You also have to deal with good but not great facilities. The pool, for example, is only 20 yards long, not the standard 25 yards for most pools. The weight room can also be a bit disorganized and there are often local kids messing around. But the price cannot be beat and the center even offers many classes including yoga, personal training, swim lessons and non-sports classes such as Spanish and knitting. And any Denver Public Schools student can use the MNC free of charge. Also, the people who run the center are super-nice and go above their duties to be helpful towards their patrons. And best of all, this place isn't used nearly as much as it should be and therefore you often have much of the facilities for yourself. Which is why I've hesitated so long to write this review. The center is only open for a few more weeks and I didn't want any competition for my swim lanes or the bench press. Sorry.

A group of six of us went on a Sunday afternoon, and it was crowded, but we didn't have to wait long to get our skates. The way it works is that the ice skating rink is free, but you have to pay to rent skates. If you own your own skates, then, the experience is completely free! To rent skates, you wait outside in front of a little booth and get a wrist and then go to the window next to that one and say which size you'd like. Despite the rink being crowded, the wait for skates was very short. Service was friendly and efficient. The skates weren't the highest quality, and they use ski boot like buckles rather than laces, but I can't complain given the convenience and price. The ice rink gets smoothed over/cleaned using a Zamboni every so often, and when that happens, you can stand by fire pit stands (I'm not sure what they're called?) or sit on the benches right outside the rink. We stayed for about an hour and a half to two hours and had a good time. This is a great activity for families and friends alike!

You must go directly north to the adjacent Johnson-Habitat Park to access the river and the trail. Platte River Drive cuts off the east side of the park and the other sides are surrounded by a rather sleepy industrial area, so the park is generally very quiet. There are two large sports fields and a generous parking lot, so I imagine things get crowded when a game is in progress. The other major amenity of the park is a small but beautiful lake at the south end. A pedestrian/bicycle path meanders through most of the park and there are also large grassy areas. Vanderbilt offers a couple baseball fields and a roughly paved path - the path loops the baseball fields and a small pond - expect a 10 minute loop at a moderate pace. A couple other pros are bathroom facilities and what I assume is a small concession stand for nicer weather (probably during game time). Since the path is pretty uneven, it's not the best place to do your laps, but could certainly be worse. I parked over on the street due to the signs in the parking lot providing notice of vehicle break ins. :( There was also a small tent camp at the time I visited. I was the only one actively using the park and decided to head elsewhere after my first lap. While I probably won't be back, it's a nice enough place for a walk if you live in the neighborhood, and is probably a lot of fun during baseball season.
