What a little gem! So nice to play sand volleyball in the middle of winter! It was $10 a person. It looks like they have 6 courts inside and quite a few outside too. I will say it smells a little musty in there, but I'm sure that's just expected when you're playing volleyball in a warehouse in the winter. I didn't notice it after being in there for a few minutes. We had SO much fun it didn't bother me at all. We didn't stick around for drinks but they had great deals, I'll definitely be back! read more

Wouldn't recommend. Their "court rental site" allows you to reserve late night courts from around 1030-45 till 1225. We weren't able to get on our court until 11. They kicked everyone out at 1148 tonight. What a waste of money. It has happened 3 times in last couple months. Our friends have been coming for over a year and are now going to find a new place to play. Don't waste your money unless you enjoy getting less than half the time you pay for. Also 10 minutes into us playing, they tried to move us to an outside wet court so they could close that half of the building. This place has gone downhill quick. Maybe hire some employees who don't mind working their full shift. read more

This place feels like home! I'm so thankful that I found The Island when I first moved to Denver! First of all, the volleyball is great. You can find someone to play with at almost any level, from not-so-good players to former college players, you can usually find a great match for your ability. Don't know anyone who plays at The Island? Email the owners and they should be able to get you set up! Not only does The Island have 6 indoor and two outdoor sand courts, but also they have a full restaurant and bar that is open late. The food is pretty awesome, too! From fish tacos to burgers and Cajun fries, their food never disappoints. Their bar is also relatively inexpensive and has some great options for beer and liquor. All in all, The Island is an awesome place for volleyball enthusiasts in the Denver area. I hope I can stay in Denver forever so I can continue to participate in this community! read more

We're here for a National Tournamen. Their bathrooms are disgusting! Makes me wonder about the kitchen... Nice place for beach volleyball though. Could definitely use more shade and shelter from sun and elements. Would be great to set up a bbq outside and serve up $8 burgers for the player like they do at similar venues all over the country. I had been told about an indoor volleyball sand court in Denver. Since I am only an occasional (and not very good) volleyball player, I didn't pay too much attention. But, one night this past week, I was invited to a special dinner event / live auction and tropical dinner & drinks for the benefit of a local school. Since it was for a school that a friend's child attends, I couldn't say "no." So, in the dead of winter, I was persuaded to dress-up in tropical themed attire. I dug through my summer duds and came up with a Hawaiian flowered shirt, shell earrings and sandals. Now, keep in mind that I'm at the base of the Rocky Mountains, the temperature outside is hovering around 20 degrees and off we head to a tropical dinner. Huh? As we exited the car, I saw folks pouring into "The Island" all decked out in what would only be appropriate for Southern California, Florida, or perhaps Tahiti, at this time of year. But, I quickly realized this was the place I'd heard about where they hold sand volleyball tournaments. It was huge! I always thought it was part of a gym . . . you know, a large room for winter volleyball and outdoor fields for summer volley ball. How wrong I was. Stepping through the door was like stepping into a cross between a large warehouse/gym and a tropical paradise. Palm trees, tons of sand, volleyball courts, pool tables, horse shoe fields, a restaurant and a full bar all made this special tropical center a great island get-away without leaving the Rocky Mountains! I almost forgot that it was below freezing outside and I had sandals on . . . maybe I will have to work on my volleyball skills so I can have an excuse to spend more time in The Island - a warm paradise at the foot of the Rocky Mountains!. read more

Great venue however the lack of security for games ending at 11pm and later with court rentals needs to be addressed ASAP. Cars get broken in to, and the wanting of being a Bar brings in people that don't play volleyball causing a risk for patrons and staff!!!! read more

I basically live here. It's a volleyball enthusiasts refuge. There are 6 courts inside and 2 outside. So they have sand volleyball leagues, tournaments, and drop-in year around. There's nothing more amazing then when it's 30-something degrees outside, snow coming down, and the wind is blowing, then to come here. You can strip off your winter layers, into shorts and a tank top, because it feels like you are on a tropical island. The murals on the wall and the heat lamps make it feel like you've escaped the blizzard conditions without needing a passport and bypassing TSA security. During the summer time they open up the big garage doors and it feels like a nice beach breeze through the place. Heaven! The drinks are reasonably priced, the bar food menu is actually pretty healthy, and if your team starts play first you can sometimes be rewarded with a free beer pitcher. Everyone here is very friendly and most regularly play here, so you'll start to recognize a lot of faces and get to know people quickly. All levels are pretty competitive and there are more rules to play by then other bar leagues. They will call hands. The only downside is that sometimes the wrong person gets ahold of the playlist for the night and we end up listening to slow-jams. It's hard to stay focused on competitive play when "I do (cherish you)" from 98 degrees is on the sound system. - This is a rare occasion but I'm calling it out because it's funny. I've been playing volleyball here for 7 years. I absolutely LOVE this place. To me it's my "cheers" where everyone knows your name. The bartenders are Superb!!! All of them. They have amazing memories and will always remember your name, your spouses name, the drinks you often order, etc. The food is out of this world. You would never expect chef quality food at a bar filled with sand (it's a sand volleyball place) but they have this amazing chef in the kitchen who creates a new special every week and it is as good as you would find in any nice restaurant. Seriously. Try it. Volleyball here is fantastic and fun. Ceilings are VERY high so you can skyball it and it won't hit the ceiling (well, almost - but compared to the Oasis which has rather low ceilings this one is pretty freaking high). Summer times they open the garage doors all along one side and you can sometimes find people soaking in the sun in the small patches of grass outside. They also have two outdoor courts for summer use. read more

I play here twice a week, and have eaten here god knows how many times. The food is surprisingly good, and some of it can actually be healthy. I'm not sure why, but volleyball players also have a mad affinity for alcohol as well. They've got a nice selection of beers, an even better selection of tequilas, and a bunch of very nice, good bartenders. They almost always have drink specials as well as a number of TVs to watch sports. Oh yeah, the volleyball (2's, 4's, and 6's) ranges from recreational to very, very competitive. If you're looking for indoor sand play, (saves my knees to play on sand) this or the Oasis (in Broomfield) are the places to play. While it's good for kids, please keep the kids off the sand or in a seat as balls come very hard from many directions. read more

Drop-in clinic was a blast. Two solid hours of constant volleyball and help in how to improve. I was a beginner returning to the game after well over a decade of not playing since high school PE, and I was playing on sand for the first time. It was hugely fun--playing on sand takes all the fear of getting hurt out of diving for receives. Still, it was clear I was extremely out of shape, as I was exhausted and sore all over by the end of the night, hours after I'd gotten home, and my forearms were bruised all over. My thighs refused to support me, and my shoulders ached when I lifted them. That was a painful night. And yet... I must be a masochist, because I'd like to go back again ASAP! Have your dreams of being a semi-pro beach volleyball player been shattered by the fact that you live in one of the more landlocked parts of the country? Or do you want to have a tropical themed wedding / honeymoon with several hundred of your closest friends without the hassle of leaving town? If you answered yes to either of these questions then you'll probably want to know more about The Island. It's a huge building tucked just far enough away from a major intersection that you might never know it was there. Just the idea of being able to go here any time of year and play volleyball is uplifting. But just to be clear, I've only ever been in here for private events, and it seems like I end up here for one about once a year. That's because it's a wonderful place to have a large events, especially in those months where you want that tropical getaway but can't get away. The food and catering even for very large crowds has always been excellent, the furnishings are laid back and comfortable, and the bar is well-stocked with both micro brews and the things you would expect to order on the beach. And somehow I never manage to track sand back to my car. Not even the real beach can make such a claim. Now, if only we can talk them into putting in a wave pool. read more

Great place if you love volleyball, there are also horseshoes outside. Foosball tables, table tennis, billiards and a nice, comfortable environment. It is a great place to rent for events as well. Maybe a birthday party for your young ones with hidden and buried treasure chests, pirates holding clues, limbo, tons of beach toys, buckets and shovels, water - all the things needed to make sand castles! As well as a tasty menu for a fair price. For a graduation or wedding it transforms and can have stages for bands and dance floors. The chef's are gifted professionals with a large range of skills, capable to meet any needs you may have. A great find, fun to just drop in and play a game of volleyball and have a drink or two with friends on a whim as well! I found The Island through Craigslist when I first moved to Denver and have been playing here ever since. The Island is an old warehouse/garage that's been turned into 6 indoor and 2 outdoor sand volleyball courts. The Island had leagues for all skill levels and team sizes (6s, 4s, doubles) and leagues run every day of the week. If you're looking to join a team, the website has a player pool that you can add your name to for subbing. The Island also has a full bar and menu - I've only ordered food a few times but each time, it's been better than your standard bar fare. read more

If you love SAND volleyball, you've got to get on a team and play on one of their leagues -- they offer co-ed, double's, 4's, and 6's. There are six 'indoor' courts and two outdoor courts -- complementing all the fun is an awesome sports bar with giant TVs, amazing brews and great food! (Definitely try their wings!) The 'indoor' courts become indoor/outdoor during warmer seasons, as they'll open up the giant garage doors to really add to the fun..... and always playing is fun music. This organization also offers grass and indoor court volleyball leagues, not to mention local, regional and international tournaments! Had a company-wide event here during the day - we had the entire place to ourselves. We were able to pick and choose the activities we wanted, have and indoor/outdoor feel, be barefoot and food and drinks onsite. I would have figured all of Denver's volleyball elite would have already reviewed this place. Instead, I'll add a second review from a non-volleyball player. I attend the Island almost weekly as a volleball wife -- meaning I spend a lot of time at the Island watching volleyball, chatting with players and enjoying the Island's surprisingly good food and beverage. Take your pick of volleball leagues (it's indoor sand courts by the way) -- 2,4 or 6 players at every skill level on multiple nights every week. Or drop in at various times for pick-up games. If you've never been , you're probably wondering how many people would really show up to play pick-up games and it's surprisingly quite a few. I now refer to The Island as the "Center of the Universe" because more and more often I run into someone in everyday life who I already see at the Island. Okay - so we know it's good for volleyball; it's only one of 2 places in town with indoor sand volleyball. But what about when you're not on the court? The bar is definitely beach casual, and when games are in full swing it can be loud. But the drinks are well-priced, there's never a wait at the bar and the food still surprises me. In addition to the traditional bar far (all good) there are a few more inventive dishes, and the specials are usually well worth a try. Recently they installed some medium size flat screen T.V.'s, which is nice during the winter when we have Sunday games and I prefer to watch football. I'd love to see them enhance their tv set up even more, but I'm sure the sand in the air doesn't make that too easy. Speaking of sand in the air - it's really not as bad as you'd think. In the summer there are plenty of doors open plus a patio. In the winter, the air only gets bad after a full 12 hours of ball being played. They keep the sand watered down to mitigate the issue. That really sums it up. If you want a break from the ordinary and to feel a little closer to the beach, this is a good spot to try. read more

Made special plans weeks ago to come here during the holidays. The website has the holiday hours and days and drop in times posted. We even called ahead and the morning of to confirm the hours and staff confirmed everything was open as posted. When we got there, the place was closed for private event. Multiple people were headed in for open court but were also denied. The website still has the wrong hours posted. Yeesh, pull on together on communication and coordination. read more
