Yesterday we went to Platt Hill in Bloomingdale for a last-ditch effort to get two lilac bushes we were replacing. We walked in the outside area, and all plants were gone - put away. We could tell they were making way for Christmas Trees. Thinking we couldn't accomplish this, and getting ready to leave, all of a sudden, their employee Stephanie appeared. Without a hitch, she asked us what we needed. We then received extensive information on what was available. Not only was she educating us on varieties of lilac bushes, but she was also going to go into was already put away into storage for the spring to bring us what we asked for. Wow! Talk about going above and beyond. She actually brought out 4 bushes so we could choose wisely. We chose our two, and with Stephanie's advice purchased the fertilizer to go with it in planting. I checked out the hot house, and Platt Hill employees were all over the place preparing for Christmas. Everyone employee greeted me and kept working at the same time. I would say the store will be ready for Christmas in a couple of days. I believe they are having an open house this weekend. Thank you, Stephanie for such an uplift on an ordinary buying experience. Platt Hill in Bloomingdale is my favorite nursery. They always have a great selection of Beautiful,healthy plants. I could spend hours just looking around. Well staffed, super helpful associates managing a medium size retail garden shop for all the green thumbs out there. MiL wanted to buy a gift for an upcoming house visit to my uncle, so wanted to come here. Like most cost conscious folks, we go to the garden center at any of the major big box home improvement stores, so I haven't had the opportunity to come here. It's a really nice place...better than the majority of independent nurseries that we've visited. It's getting close to spring here in Chicago, but not yet there, so the place wasn't packed with plants yet. But what they had were not the usual, with a good selection of planters of different materials. We ended up buying a Jasmine plant and a separate planter, which Platts will repot for you at no extra cost. It's a great place to come for gifts to your plant loving friends. read more

Great place to learn and buy almost anything for your garden. The people that work here are all skilled and if they don't know , they will direct you to the right person that does know. They have beautiful trees and everything under the sun if flowers. We bought lots of large hydrangeas and had them delivered and planted by Platt Hill . They send someone first to locate where the lines are so they don't get in trouble with Julie They put flags so they know where to did and where not to dig. Just a really great experience. read more

We have been to Platt Hill a few times for plants for landscaping etc. But this time we went for a fresh Christmas tree. And it was kind of a magical visit. It got me in the spirit. And I am a real Scrooge normally so that is saying something. As far as trees, they had quite a variety and lota of sizes. They will trim it for you as you request, remove loose needles, net it and tie it to your vehicle. I haven't bought a tree before, but the prices seem reasonable. They have lots of Christmas decorations. Tree toppers, ornaments, wreaths, you name it! They also have an electric train set on a table in the back with hidden figurines for your kids (or you!) to find. But the best part was that Santa was there! The kids went and sat with him, told him what they wanted, and there was no line so they shared a wonderful conversation with him too. If you are looking for a good start to the Christmas season, you can't go wrong here. read more

I bought a Japanese Maple and a Sugar Maple here. They had a great selection of trees, and I received helpful service from 5 workers. They helped me load the trees in my car, and gave me additional knowledge to help make sure they grow well. This was 2 months ago, and the trees are growing well and look fabulous. read more

After several experiences, including giving them the benefit of the doubt, I cannot recommend Platt Hill Nursery. If you need plants or gardening services of any kind I highly recommend you go elsewhere. I've visited Platt Hill several times, the most recent visit was the straw that broke the camel's back. Without getting too long winded I'll sum up: 1) You cannot call them to ask questions. Every question asked over the phone, besides "Are you open?", is met with "Why don't you come in and speak with someone." 2) While in-person, finding a staff member with which to have a conversation is a very difficult task (either due to scarcity or unavailability due to helping other customers or performing maintenance tasks) 3) Their prices are somewhat inflated for their products (and services...) 4) Their level of service leaves much to be desired It is the final point on which I will elaborate quickly: we bought two bushes last year and paid to have them delivered and installed (as this was the only way to "guarantee" them). One lived, one died. Upon returning this weekend to have them fulfill their "guarantee" we learned that they guarantee the bush ONLY. The customer has to foot the bill, AGAIN, for delivery ($50) and installation ($60 PER BUSH). So $200+ in fees later you're still net ONE bush. This is not like any guarantee I've ever heard of before and I think it's very misleading. Not to mention the fact that they sell it as "Don't worry, we guarantee it." Yes, AFTER you shell out another $100. Oh, and the kicker: It's early May. They said they could deliver and plant it in LATE AUGUST. Please, I urge you, take your business elsewhere. This nursery leaves too much to be desired for the money and time you will spend. For those interested, we did NOT pay the extra $110. We had them load the bush into our trunk and I... somehow (haha)... got it planted completely by myself. read more

Visited 2x. Friendly service and beautiful rose selection in early June. It was very difficult to pick just one rose :). After sniffing and admiring many, I found my wishlist rose, Distant Drums, the last one that they had. It came home with me and made the car ride home smell wonderful. I had also seen the David Austin rose, Abraham Darby, on their website, didn't see any in stock when we went. They had quite a few Weeks roses, but would like to see more David Austin roses. They carry Fox Farms soil, bird seed, and garden ornaments. All the plants I saw looked healthy and well organized. read more

We have been customers for 3 years. These are the things I would recommend: - seasonal flowers, Christmas trees (huge variety and healthy trees that are beautiful. They also name the trees which is fun for our family to see the name of the tree we pick out at Christmas), seasonal vegetable plants (great variety, they sell quick so buy early in the seasons) They have a cute gift shop that has wonderful items I buy for gifts. Unique items, great quality, low price points! It's a hidden gem!) The staff are very nice people!! The cat! I mean, any store with a cat is awesome :) Ok, now on to what I do not recommend: I DO NOT recommend purchasing trees from them and having them planted by their crew. We had 2 fruit trees bought from and planted by platt hill and the apple tree has turned out to be a total bust: it's crooked and leaning so far it will soon fall over, we were told it would produce apples because lots of crab apple trees in our area to cross pollinate (we have had 4 apples total ever!) and it's not planted properly (thus the leaning) and it not "rooting" (if someone was strong enough they could lift it out of the ground. You can hold the trunk and it literally move it around). They have a 2 year "guarantee" but the problem is, it didn't grow much during those 2 years so it was hard to see the "problem". I told them I thought it was crooked and they said no it should be fine. Well, 3 years in, it's very clearly not fine but it's after their "guarantee period". That length of time is very "convenient". If the tree were to die then it would be a clear problem and within their timeline but any other problem isn't really visible until there's enough time for something to grow more which for trees takes time. This wasn't cheap for us and so we have wasted money, and now wasted lots of time. We will have to hire another company to either come fix the tree, or pay to have it removed, and/or replaced and then that's additional money as well as we will have to wait another few years to get apples if we have to start with a new tree. Very disappointing. I would stick to the low price point items and only get trees and planted by a landscaper who you work with who has their own business. The quality would be better (not subcontractor teams like Platt Hill uses) and they'd be more willing to correct a problem since it would be their own business reputation. read more

I grew up with Platt Hill in my surrounding area. As a adult, I can see why people in Roselle are so impressed. The level of variety they stock is top notch and the staff is knowledgeable AND very helpful. The major drawback for me is the price of regular items (why is a Knockout rose bush $35, Home Depot has the same plant for $15). None of the plants at Platt Hill ever look dead or like they are on their last legs, so you can be assured you're getting a healthy plant. My neighbors recommended Platt Hill for their large inventory, pricing, and service. Their recommendation was spot-on because everything that they said was true. The associates were able to help provide suggestions based on my budget and vision. I didn't realize that where the plants will be placed was just as important as the type of plant. I don't have a green thumb so I needed perennials that were low maintenance. Thank goodness that they had plenty of those for lazy landscapers like me and reasonable pricing on delivery and installation. The best thing about Platt Hill is the one year warranty. If your plants don't survive the first year, Platt Hill will replace them for you. This was helpful since we had a brutal winter last year and my arbs didn't survive the severe weather and winds. Our first year purchasing services and products solely from Platt. So glad we did. They mulched all beds, added colorful perennials and ground cover. Photo of a basket they encouraged us not to purchase until weather was warmer. We purchased and move it in and out based on crazy spring temperature fluctuations. I shop here often, and there is always a great selection of plants, pottery, gardening tools and various odds and ends. The owner is quite friendly as well as the younger staff but there's a seasoned female staff member that always seem to be in a terrible mood...really unpleasant and loud. It really puts a damper on the shopping experience and the atmosphere for the staff as well. Horrible customer service the Saturday before Mother's Day! I couldn't get an employee to help me for the life of me. When I did find one she pointed to where I needed to go and walked away. I still had not found the butterfly bush I was looking for. Asked another employee and she pointed as well Instead of walking me to the bushes. Almost two years ago my husband and I purchased about 15 Arborvitaes and had Platt Hill deliver and plant them. Delivery was $60 and then there was a planting fee of $60 per tree. All in all, we spent close to $1500. Each tree comes with a 2 year warranty where they replace the dead tree free of charge. Or so it seems. I take responsibility for not reading the fine print on the original receipt of purchase that stated the only thing that is replaced is the tree; the delivery charge and planting fee are still charged to the customer. So, we went back to Platt Hill last week to have our tree replaced and ended up spending another $200 to have the dead tree replaced, $120 of that being delivery charge and planting fee. Not a real warranty if the customer still has to pay additional fees to have the warrantied tree replaced. Then I had a question about purchasing some additional perennials to add to the order since they were coming out anyway, and they seemed like they could not be bothered. Did not have the answers for the questions I was asking and almost seemed annoyed that I was asking them. I ended up passing on purchasing additional items. When I asked when the tree will be replaced they said they could not give an exact date but would call a few days ahead of time. Not a satisfactory answer. Also, last summer we bought four perennial shrubs, two of which died within a few weeks. Platt Hill is overpriced for the quality of plants they sell, and I have had better luck with plants and shrubs from Home Depot at a fraction of the price. We will see when our $200 warrantied tree will actually show up. read more

The price is on the higher side so be prepared to spend some $$$. You can find the same plants in nearby nurseries for cheaper though. The employees are amazing! They are knowledgeable and friendly. I have been going here for two years now for my herb garden. I initially was reluctant because the prices are much higher than the big box stores. However, my herbs have been AMAZING the last two years. It is totally worth the money. My husband is always able to find hard-to-find peppers here as well. This place is awesome! I was on the hunt for a variety of perennials to revamp a big flower box we have. I tried Home Depot, Menards, Ace Hardware, Walmart and left everywhere empty handed because they only had a few picked over choices when it came to perennials. I remembered driving by this place a few times and thought I would give it a try and I'm so glad I did. The variety here is insane and the prices aren't bad at all. I ended up leaving with a trunk full and came back a few days later when I wanted to do a different box with annuals. read more
