This is such a cute garden center! They have various categories of plant and decor items, and even supplies for birds (such as food and houses). More (?) importantly, they have two cute dogs who accompany the employees as they do their work. The staff, by the way, could not be more gracious. Ok, it's been over a year since I was last able to travel due to pandemic restrictions and precautions. I'm in Chicago area to cheer on my nephew who is running the Chicago marathon tomorrow. Had to visit the Barn Owl again. No kidding, if not for family, it alone is almost worth the drive up. Again, plenty of great seasonal choices at excellent prices and quality that cannot be matched by big-box chain stores. Late season vegetables, fall mums, hay bales, corn stalks, and literally thousands of pumpkins and gourds to select from. Lots of cute Halloween themed decorative items. My wife, daughter and I spent over an hour checking it all out. Monday we'll leave going back home loaded down with unique treasures! read more

They had just enough plants for my planters. I'm so thrilled about how my new landscape. I can't wait till next spring to do an all out landscape of front, side and backyard. Been buying tomatoes and other veggies here going on four summers now. They're within walking distance of my home, though I drive because I buy too much to carry. Seems like their selection is actually better than usual this year. I don't think I'd seen beets or kohlrabi there in years past. The tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and zucchini have always been, and remain, top notch. I love getting home and slicing up a fresh tomato nice and thick, throwing a little sea salt on it and having a snack. read more

I used to love this place. A few weeks ago we purchased a package of window clings (in the shape of a bird) to,prevent bird strikes on our picture window. We got home and put one on the window. The second one was missing from the package. It had been taped closed but we didn't think anything of it when we bought them. Today I called to see if I could get the other one. We paid $10.00 for it and now have only one. The person I spoke to asked if I had the receipt, which I did not. He also asked if I used it. When I told him we had put it on the window he said they couldn't do anything about it because they wouldn't be able to return it since we had used one of them. I originally debated on ordering from Amazon but opted to buy local. We have recommended this place to so many people. Not anymore. Very disappointing. read more

Fall is in the air: sort of. And though I have never purchased from Barn Owl before, I thought I would take a peak at their seasonal flowers. Let it also be known that I am no expert: no green thumb have I. Nice day for snooping around; and I was pretty much left alone. What did catch my eye were some gorgeous pansies! The color calibration mechanism in my head kept thinking purple and gold; purple and gold. So, I got several large scale yellow mum plants, as well. I have been here on and off for the past several months. Most recently, to fill my propane tank. One thing I found interesting was that there were no partial fill on propane tanks. You pay 1 price....partial full, or not. The plant selection is great. I'll be at, slightly pricey. You can find a lot of things you can't find at the big box store, which I like. You do get some good treatment while you're there, with knowledgeable staff. They also have a farmer's market during the summer which is worth the pickings. read more

Pretty good clematis selection; very good seed selection (3 varieties, several organic options) as well as a much wider range than usual of organic / green fertilizers/insect control options. And they do their own grass seed mix, which I always consider the mark of a quality place. (If Farm and Fleet can do it, why not a garden store?). Barn Owl is a farmstand located off of Gary Avenue in Carol Stream (The village with no downtown... aren't you glad you know that now?). My family uses it to refill our propane tank. It's 18 bucks. They have a bunch of plants, flowers, veggies, and fruits too. I can't speak on anything else besides the propane, which is quick and painless. You sometimes have to find someone to come fill your tank i.e. go into the main barn and ask. Not a big deal, though. read more

We bought our Christmas tree from Barn Owl this year and I must say...this has been the best tree we have ever had!! Loved it so much it was hard to take down and put it out at the curb. A solid place to buy seeds and organic gardening supplies. Prices are a little higher than Platt Hill, but they usually have a wider selection of organic seeds. This place also has a parrot named Joe and an orange tabby cat prowling the premises to give the place some ambience. I haven't visited their greenhouse area, so I can't tell you anything about their plants. But they're a good place to go for organic gardening stuff. read more

I love this place. In the spring they offer an incredible selection of heirloom, organic, and hybrid seeds. In the summer I purchase fresh, locally grown produce. They have a large variety of different fruits and vegetables. Fresh honey, jams, preserves...a real treat. Their plants, flowers, and bushes are healthy and well cared for. Not the neglected half dead stock you often see at big box stores. In the fall I stock up on bird seed when it's on sale. They store it for me all winter long so all I have to do is pick it up (they even carry the bags and load my trunk). In the winter they have the freshest wreathes, garland, and trees. Went to Barn Owl for the first time today and immediately received help from two employees as they helped us find the vegetable plant varieties we wanted, including several heirloom options. We also learned a lot about plants native to Illinois when we asked the owner for recommendations. We are hoping to attract butterflies and hummingbirds and she gave a number of great suggestions. Yes, the parrot was cool- my daughter loved him! Barn Owl also sells some beautiful, unique, locally made birdbaths, imprinted with various leaf patterns, which make great gifts for garden enthusiasts. We'll be back! read more

Mr. Crabby runs this place! We bought several flats of flowers from this place. The Astor flat did not take, even though all the other flowers were fine. We took pictures of the flowers in the pots to show him. He was not interested. We won't bother you with the details of his illogical dialogue, but he would only give us half off a flat. He wanted to know where else you would get more than half your money back on a defective product. Our thought was, "Everywhere!". Basically he acted like an "astor"! read more

The workers are so friendly it's a delight to come here. They have items for pets that I can't find in the Big Box stores, such as organic food and corn-cob bedding. If the shelf happens to be bare, they special order what I need and then phone me when it comes in. They cheerfully, sincerely offer to carry my heavy items to the car.
