1 Star Review I went into the Plato's Closet in Pacifica today to hopefully sell some clothes and was honestly shocked by how unprofessional the staff was. The two young girls working at the counter were very loudly talking to each other about a customer who had just come in and couldn't afford some Lululemon clothing items. They were making fun of customers, bad-mouthing people, and openly cursing, expressing to each other "they are trying to save their boss a bunch of money" -- all while other shoppers were in the store. There was even a grandmother with a stroller and small child walking around the small space, and you could clearly hear them swearing and gossiping about customers. It created such an uncomfortable and unpleasant atmosphere. I decided to wait around and browse while they take a look at my clothing( I showed up first thing when they opened and was the only one selling clothes at the time) they continued this very loud negative conversation for 10 minutes before even touching my bags to go through them. I understand retail can be stressful, and I was a teenager once too, but if the employees are going to be this rude and unprofessional in front of customers, it makes you question how the store is being managed. Im all for venting about a crappy customers to my coworkers but not out loud and not at the counter. Very bad look. Definitely not the shopping experience I expected. read more

On this Saturday evening I walked into an open door, im not paying attention to the time. 4 young ladies who had appeared to be " glued " to a video or something on a phone.. I didn't care I simply asked " where you you keep size 6? The shoe racks were very visible so I just went to look on my own. A young lady, probably in charge said " you have to leave, we're closed " a little stunned I replied " it certainly doesn't look like it? Why is the door unlocked?" I Then understood, these are young girls, staring at the phone waiting until they can leave!! Lesson learned young ladies. Lock the door. Turn off the music. Have a great evening! read more

I came in to sell a bunch of North Face items. The gal at the front counter explained to me how the selling process worked. I was able to drop off bags of clothes and come back later. They offered a discount on anything i purchased that day as a seller and gave me cash for the items they took. if you want to get scammed please come here. okay not really and exaggeration but 12 items (brand new) for $60 dollar pay out averages for about $5 dollars an item. Math is not mathing esp when I had limited edition true religions, nike velour, special edition vans etc. I guess if you are pressed for cash and do not want to upload and ship items on poshmark this is an ultimate last resort. It's funny too bc you see how the items in the store are majorly up marked knowing the seller probably made little to nothing but I suppose that's how this business and consumerism in general works. This Plato's closet has been around since I probably was in middle school (2015) I've always thought this store was not plus size friendly. And when I say that, I don't mean people are judging me when I walk into the store but low-key it has the presence of it. When looking upon the clothes, I see that all the plus size collection is pushed to the back of the store on of that not a wide variety. It makes me think "are plus size people even really welcome here" ? And don't get me started on the ambience of the place. I get the "hi welcome in" in the most monotone voice I've ever heard. I get there around 1:50 to donate clothes and by 2 o'clock, I was out with all of my clothes because the clerk said "we're looking for my tank tops and summer clothes". Which I understand, but as a plus size woman walking into this store there's no sense of comfort, security or even warmth makes me feel like I'm not welcome. Anyone who's hating on this store is just straight up incorrect. I was in California for ten days and it was so good I had to go twice I found the skirt of my DREAMS and it was like $10. They have so much cute stuff, and the prices are so good. I've never seen so many cute tank tops and skirts and long sleeve shirts in my life. I will start off by saying that upon entering the store, I was impressed with the quality of the used items. Doc Martens, Jordan's catch your eye right as you enter. The facility is clean and organized, staff greeted us and had no issues with "attitude" or anything I've seen other reviews. I brought in some items and everything was passed over. Totally fine. 3 stars because this place is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. They cater to a younger crowd, which was obvious after looking through the selection of tops (not one of them looked like it would fit my thigh). Perhaps it's just a generational thing, but if they decide to open a Plato's Closet for a slightly older than tween crowd, count me in! read more

Plato's Closet is a thrift store chain that carries mall brand clothing mainly catered to teens and young adults. This location had a decent variety of brands such as Urban Outfitters and Princess Polly, mixed with the cheaper brands like Shein and f21. Clothes seemed to be priced according to brand. Prices are alright - slightly higher than Goodwill but fair considering the selection is more curated. There were a few items that had stains, tears, or missing buttons but then again it is a thrift store. The store is organized by size and clothing type. When I went in early January all clearance items were 70% off! About 1/3 of the store was on clearance so I shopped there for literally 4 hours and never got bored lol. I got shirts for $2, sweaters for $3, and jeans for $5. I don't think I've been to another thrift store with such a good selection at such low prices. Employees were friendly and never rushed me when I took a long time in the fitting room. I can't say anything for selling at this store, but for shopping I'd highly recommend! read more

the workers specifically the younger short, wavyish brown hair, and high pitched voice were bad mouthing other customers OUT LOUD INFRONT of other customers. i understand that there are certain customers that will have you frustrated but the customers they were shit talking about were literally just asking reasonable questions... and you work here its YOUR job whether you like it or not to deal with these customers in a respectful manner especially when they mean no harm note to the store owner: moving forward if you want to create a better atmosphere for your future customers maybe you should listen to these reviews and train your workers to have basic human decency like im not one to sound like a karen but it genuinely upsets me and ruins my day when i see not only me but other innocent people getting shit talked and treated rudely read more

Please make note and clear record of what you are selling here. Especially if it is of value. They lost a pair of my shoes and said "it happens sometimes". No remediation or attempt to make me whole. I'm not suggesting this was malicious or shady. The staff were actually very friendly and personable. However, I think their selling process is extremely unorganized. I sell my new/gently-used items here. Staff is friendly, and reasonable selection options with decent prices for shoppers like the misses. The major downside? The new location is super tight and compact. No room in the aisles and difficult to even get around the store. A huge downgrade from the previous spot, just a few doors away. read more

There are a few things that I have noticed in the year of going into this store. The staff, on multiple occasions, have undressed or tried clothing on behind the counter while customers are waiting for help. I have waited for help, making eye contact with several employees and ignored until physically tapped one of the employees on the shoulder. When selling clothing, I bring by clothing in folded and neat. I am always returned my bags with my items stuffed and overflowing. This last 2 trips into the store I was told NONE of my clothes were current and had a sticker stating they're out of fashion. The next day I took those same bags to Platos in San Mateo and made $57.13 and $20.27. Overall, it is run by a bunch of teenagers who are more focused on what they can buy for themselves then helping customers. I wouldn't waste my time going into this Platos. read more

I sell here to rotate my closet. I also use Buffalo exchange and crossroads. Plato's is the most unprofessional place to sell out of the three. Each time I come, I bring the clothes in folded and when I pick it up, the clothes is a jumbled mess thrown in my bags however the employee wanted to. If someone brings in folded clothes, it's best practice to fold it back the way they brought it. Once, I came in and attempted to sell and was told, I could only sell for store credit despite them advertising cash for clothes. Why not let people know ahead of time or just limit buy hours to ensure cash is on hand for selling? Questionable. The selection of items to purchase at this store is highly questionable as well at times- while I know for facts they pass on nice, designer stuff- they sell Shein and Target for over retail. Wow, I love this location! Not only is it clean and the clothes don't smell funky, but the manager/owner(?) who was working behind the counter was so nice and informative of the process about what to do if you're selling back clothes. Plato's doesn't take business casual or formalwear FYI. I came on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't overly busy with sell-backs so it took about half the time if not less compared to the San Mateo location. This location was super organized by sizes and styles. Plus, there is plenty of room to walk up and down the aisles. They also carry a handful of notable brands such as Levi's and Brandy Melville. Clearance yellow tags are 50% off the actual price and I was able to walk away with a cute pair of cut-off shorts. Pro tip: If you're looking to buy but especially sell, check out their website and follow them on Insta to see what kind of styles they're buying so you know approximately what they'll take. There's a massive parking lot outside and this spot is conveniently located close to the beach! read more

Although store items are a nice variety with decent prices, selling items could be a much better experience. It would be very helpful if the associate explained the process of selling from the beginning. I was only directed to the tablet to input my information. When they were done going through my items, they offered me the cash without explaining the breakdown of each item cost and why only a few items were selected. The items accepted and price given for items that were actually selected seemed very arbitrary and much less than what it would be sold for, given I had a new with tag Levi's items and brands they asked for at the storefront (e.g. Zara) In the end, after selling, they only gave me the default Plato's flyer without any explanation of items they take. read more

I like this location. Once you come in they start having some nice jams to listen to to keep in the mood for shopping. For the most part it's organized very well it's like they need a few more items to be dropped off. Somethings are on the floor but looks like they are minimally staffed. Wow what an experience. I stopped by 8/29 on Thursday around 4-5pm and they were only giving store credit. So I decided to leave and come the next day around opening time. I came in at 11:30am with a big bag of good items including a coach bag (retails $100+). After waiting for 40 minutes, I got texted to come back and they only were giving me $21 for 5 items. I mean $4 per item?! And they took the coach bag. The coach bag was in good condition as well, I would have had a higher profit selling that bag on the real real or depop. I can't believe that they lowball the heck out of your items this way. I mean I understand the store needs to make "profit"... but you can't even price a bag higher than $4-5?! What an experience and I will never come back. Better off stopping at thrift stores in San Francisco than this junk. I was here this Saturday looking to sell my used basketball shoes and some clothes for some cash and I came out surprised they accepted my shoes and most of the clothes. The ones they did not accept were completely understandable, as they had been worn down or not in their list of items. The only gripe I have is that the final payment was low, but if you look at their reasoning, it's also understandable. The way they operate as a business is to sell these items at a massive discount and that means that their prices will be low, which translates to getting a fraction of the price they sell to customers as your payment. All in all, it's a great way to make money on clothes you would like to get rid of without having to post your clothes individually on a/an marketplace/app or sending them to a donation center. read more

Came here at 6PM to sell. Immediately was told they are only selling for store credit. I understand that they have a daily limit BUT their whole marketing and plastered everywhere is CASH FOR CLOTHES. Not STORE CREDIT FOR CLOTHES. Maybe they should cool off on that if it's not empirically true. Really disappointing for people who work and can't come in the morning. I usually buy at least one thing when I sell but I don't want everything in credit. As well the lady working declined keeping my clothes overnight and picking up tomorrow when they had not reached their "cash limit". The gal working suggested we go to the San Mateo location, so I called and could not get a human on the phone with any option. They encourage you to text the number, no reply. I went back into the store to ask if they could get ahold of the other store to see if they were buying for cash. After a few minutes she got a text back and told me they are giving cash but only accepting one bag per person (I had 4). The lack of alternate options is comical. Have had nothing but decent experiences coming to this Plato's. The racks are well stocked and have a very eclectic vibe. The place itself is well maintained and the woman who usually helps me is super friendly. Whenever I come into the store not as a consumer but as a vendor I have been treated with respect and have left with a general sense of satisfaction. Since its a bit of a commute to get over to Pacifica its usually a spur of the moment type decision but there is something for everyone in this store. Good vibes all around for this location. Overall this place is a great place to go if you're of African decent. But do keep in mind the area. It is a smaller town that most likely generates most of its income from tourists! While other places may or may not be overly enthused about your business I have not ran into that particular issue here. Online is still an option but if you're more of the in person type consumer Plato's Closet has valued not only my business but has always treated me in a respectful manner.
