Platinum Data Recovery was miraculously able to recover the entirety of my data from my failing hard drive. Prior to taking it to them, unbeknownst to me my hard drive's data reader was on its last legs, and being a mechanical failure that was breaking down, additional attempts to retrieve the data using online recommended solutions continued to compromise the reader, hence why read-write symptoms rapidly got worse and worse. From the on set they informed me if they couldn't retrieve the data I'd pay nothing. If they were successful, the quote ranged from 300 to 1300. The low end being if they were able to recover the data via software alone vs the high end where they'd have to use components from a donor drive (specifically the donor drive's reader) and then recover the data from there, parsing the data, isolating bad sectors and re-reading those problem areas in other ways to make a copy. The process took 10 calendar days, and cost 1185. They transferred all 1.8 TB of the data to an external drive I supplied them with. Well worth it considering the amount of value that data is to me. They're local to me. And if you're not local, you can ship them the hard drive. Very professional. They've got some major clients but no client is too small. Highly recommended. read more

My external harddrive (WD passport, 5 years old) stopped working. The data became raw & the drive showed up as a local disk, anyhow I couldnt access my data (10 years of pictures & school notes). I paid the $99 for rush service (otherwise the diagnosis is free) and in a few hours he called to say he could recover the data and that the cost would be around $495. Yikes. But what can you do. I had a year's worth of work on the computer. So the computer was trashed but David recovered the data and I picked it up the next day. They put the recovered data on a small external hard drive. These geek guys are the best. Apparently most of their work is mailed in, and David said they get at least 20 hard drives a day to work on. I've been given Platinum Data Recovery as a referral by one of their peer competitors, Best Buy's "Geek Squad" which says a lot about this company to get such a testimonial. I've also heard nothing but nice things about Platinum from their other peers too, along with a tremendous number of reviews on Yelp too. With that, I did visit Platinum after I had the unfortunate situation where my hard drive apparently crashed, and after having a few qualified tech associates try the DYI "slave drive" attempt to recover the data to no avail, I figured... "this is a job for... Superman!" and decided to go to Platinum. The staff at Platinum is very friendly. The location is very subtle and discreet in the Westwood area near the Westside Pavilion Mall towards Pico. It's on the 2nd floor in a no frills small office with a reception area. I dropped off my drive and they were able to diagnose my problems and provide me with a quote from their estimate of $300-1,500 (a wide range due to the complexity of the nature of recovering data). Within a few days, they got back to me with the bad news that I had physical mechanical failure with my read/write drives being damaged along with bad sectors and a few scratches on the internal platters which required the need of a clean room environment and donor parts for an 80-90% chance (good if not great odds!) to recover the data, with a price quote of $1,245. What I loved about Platinum is that they were and are professional. I declined to go through the data recovery process, since for my purposes, my data wasn't worth that much $ to me. I understand for others, their data can be priceless, and the fee is more than reasonable to pay to get back what they've lost. So, having great business integrity, they didn't try to downsell me any discounts, try to re-negotiate a lower rate or convince me to move forward in any high pressured sales type tactics. I truly appreciate their honesty and practices to that regard. They didn't charge for the diagnosis, and I picked my drive up, and they were very respectful, even putting my original damaged drive in a static free bag they supplied for proper care and handling. That was icing on the cake to their customer / client services from my perspective. I'd recommend Platinum to anyone having data recovery issues who can't find a resolution, as they're reportedly amongst the best, especially where there's mechanical / physical damages. Great service. It took me 3 months to get my hard drive fixed because I took it to 2 different stores who both referred me to Platinum Data Recovery. So the worst thing that can happen to a photographer happened to me. I was shooting on a 64gb cf card and I had a good amount of pictures that I had not yet downloaded to my hard drive or computer. So I go to a lab in dtla to print a few photos off that memory card and while I'm choosing those photos I wanna print in a "sketchy kiosk" my images won't load. Wait for almost an hour for them to load, get desperate and try a different computer just find that the card is not readable anymore. I try a lot more computers and none work. I took that same memory to another data recovery place and they tell me that a circuit inside the memory is burnt and I would only be able to recover the files by doing a "chip off recover" and they can't do it! But guess who can???... these guys did it for a great price and all the photos in the memory were recovered. The timeframe they gave me is the amount of time they took to recover my files. Also gave me updates almost everyday until I heard the final result! HOPE I NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN! But if I do I know they got my back! Losing files is a horrible thing! I just have to echo everyone else's experience here. Had an old dell computer that I KNEW was acting up and on its last legs. I procrastinated about doing anything about it and yep one afternoon it just stopped working. Had I backed up thousands of photos recently? Nope. Ones that were replaceable? Nope. I was recommended to visit here from MacWest, where I couldn't recover my CF card in time. MacWest was great, I have to say, they tried their best but my situation just didn't work out with that place because of the time crunch + cards were not their specialties, I heard. My computer was so jam-packed with data, it was practically overflowing. I bought a new external hard drive, and copied everything over, just to have some breathing room.
