Plates & Palates offers soups, salads (green and pasta), and sandwiches - all of the variety that will satisfy big eaters without tasting like a pile o' grease. I find the pasta salads to be disappointing (bland and too oily) but LOVE their Reuben sandwich. The Southwest Turkey Club is also darn good, with plenty of turkey and a nice spicy kick. They always have interesting salads as well, but remember to ask for the dressing on the side because otherwise they drown the salad in it. Everything is served with kettle chips, which is a nice upgrade from Lay's or similar. The cold-cuts, breads, etc., are all a far step above most sandwich joints but not much more expensive. Actually, I always laugh a bit because it's obvious that a great deal of their menu is constructed from things you can get at Costco across the street. However, given the quality of most things at Costco and how crappy most things from usual restaurant supplies are, I see this as a positive. :) As for ambiance, it's OK. They've recently rearranged the layout, which is a big improvement, but it's still a bit bare and ugly, albeit clean. The service is good and friendly, but I HATE (and I mean HATE!) that you pay after the meal at a register. Why can't I pay when I order? It is just silly and annoying. I have actually not gone a few times because that is such a pet peeve of mine. Granato's does that too, and I presume it's to encourage you to buy other items there (kitchen supplies) on your way out... which only annoys me more since Caputo's (the more successful restaurant/store vs. Granato's) does NOT do this, hence 3 stars. I'd encourage Plates & Palates to follow Caputo's example and switch that up. read more

Actually I'm guessing here since I didn't really need to use the bathroom. But judging from the surroundings I suspect the bathroom was quite clean. Subtotal = 14 of 15 Fussy Points on the Clean Scale. Service? 4 of 5 points. Very prompt. Ambiance? 2 of 5 points. OK, so it's a store. Fun idea but doesn't really count as great ambiance. Friends from Finland Practical Scale? 5 of 5 points. VERY Practical. Almost the definition of practicality! Food? 8 of 10 points. Keep in mind this is the LUNCH food scale so just judging the 1/2 sandwich 1/2 salad combo. But on the lunch food scale it was quite good. Price/Food ratio? 5 of 5 points. I tried the Reuben with the fire tomato soup and it was delicious. My wife got the southwestern sandwich and she loved dipping her sandwich in my soup. We also sampled a few of their pasta salads, which were tasty. The thing to know about this place is if you like over-flavored, nasty American food, this place will disappoint you. However, if -like me- you like simple, good quality products, you will love this place. For example, most people put heavy amounts of cream in their tomato soup to compensate for the fact that the tomatoes weren't actually a good quality and it wouldn't taste good otherwise. This tomato soup used no cream but tasted better than many that I've had. The ingredients had integrity, and that's the most I would hope for. There are a couple subtle suggestions I would make to balance flavors differently (like making the croutons less salty) but overall it was a five-star experience. read more

I am a potato and I keep my eyes peeled for new eating adventures. I had heard good things about Plates and Palates and they didn't disappoint. I ordered the Italian Turkey Panini sandwich and the Curry Chicken salad. The sun dried tomato tapenade on the panini was a pleasant surprise. It didn't overpower, it was just right. I thought the Curry Chicken was good too. I like curry and this salad was the perfect size. Overall, I enjoyed the food and experience. I thought their combination of dining and retail was clever and comfortable. The manager was very attentive and kept our drinks full too. I will be adding Plates and Palates to my restaurant rotation. As a final thought, I wasn't sure if I felt dejected or relieved to find that there were no potato dishes or sides on the menu. read more

I love this place. My favorite thing about it is that they make their food from scratch & don't try to pass off pre-prepared stuff as their own. I've never been disappointed, some masks were better than others, but everyone has a unique palate, so they satisfy everyone's tastes. I like that they prepare their meals right in front of you. They don't have anything to hide which is always a plus for me. One other thing I love about this place is their kid food. Food was very good. However, service was absolutely sub-par. For some reason, wait help stopped by surrounding tables regularly to fill water, ask how food was, ask if diners needed anything else. But not our table. My companion had to walk up to the counter to ask for a to-go container and to ask that my hot water for tea be refilled. I had to go up to the counter, too, to ask for an extra dish. I was left with the impression that we were non-Caucasian and the staff were unfamiliar with how to interact with us. I've been hesitant to try this place because it could be hit or miss...but honestly it was SO yummy! We went for lunch, around noon. The place was PACKED! Food is fresh and so full of flavor! The set up was a little weird - we assumed it would be like casual dining, but it's more set up like a restaurant. They direct you where to sit, and you pay when you're done eating. No one really told us that, so it was a little confusing. But! The overall atmosphere and experience was still great! We will definitely be eating here again (and again!). This is my go to. Fresh food and some delicious offerings that leave me dreaming of food happiness. I have been five times or so and never leave hungry or disappointed. I usually get the Greek chicken salad. This is an artichoke lovers dream. The dressing consisted of layers of flavor accompanied buy finely chopped artichoke hearts. I would lick my plate if I were eating at home! It does get fairly full but I've never had to wait for a table. That's pretty awesome. If I get a soda they are good at keeping it filled (important for my Diet Coke loving heart). I recently tried the tomato soup which came with a giant roll. It came out looking like a bowl of marinara sauce but was really tasty! I have never tried a dessert. I have heard they are good. I've been driving by this place for years thinking it was some kind of exercise joint. I figured it was a place for girls in yoga pants to hang out. While the ratio of male to female was about 90% female to 10% male even this old fat guy got a great meal and friendly service. This restaurant came highly recommended by a few different people, but I did not have a good experience. The food was delicious, but the service was awful. When we first arrived (just 2 of us) it was before the lunch rush. It took them a while to even notice we were there and then they rushed us to order. After we received our food, which came in a reasonable amount of time, I needed a refill on my water. No waiters or waitresses had walked by our table for a while, so wanting to continue my meal, I got up and asked for a refill. (Mind you, I'm pregnant and had severe sciatica at the time. It doesn't look very good when a pregnant woman needs to get up for a refill on her water.) My friend and I finished our meal and stayed at the table for a bit just chatting when a waitress came over asking if we would move to another table so another group could use ours. A little annoyed, I stated that it was no problem and we would just leave. We paid, giving no tips, and went on our merry way without apology. I absolutely love plates and palates because the food always tastes fresh and homemade. I recommend getting the sampler- try the pear and pecan salad, the lemon tarragon and either the curry chicken salad or the basil penne pasta. Their deserts are so good, my favorite are their cheesecakes. The only thing is that sometimes their food feels more suited for lunch but I love when they had dinner specials, like the lasagna.
