As a nice little oasis of coffee in the wasteland for coffee junkies that is Byward Market - Planet Coffee is a very sharp place. It's got that fantastic indie vibe and has ample seating. It's a great place to have a coffee in the summer or pop into during the winter for some shelter from the east coast winter wind. The coffee itself is pretty top-notch (on par with Starbucks and bit better than Bridgehead's brew) and the baked goods are really solid. I really enjoyed the Chocolate Fudge cake and would recommend it to others. I would give Planet Coffee an extra star if it had wifi. But at the same time that I'm disappointed that there is no wifi I also understand the decision to not have wifi available. read more

Coffee is quite good. The ambiance of the courtyard is fantastic. Great spot for hanging out during the summer and doing some people watching. Pastries are good. I agree with other commenters about the inside - it does look a little unorganized. They get the wrong size and when I tell them they decide to just pour it into a larger cup and just add a little more milk. Missed probably 2-3 more oz left that they could have added. I didn't want to make a fuss but it irks me that when I pay $8 for a coffee I want it done right. I shouldn't have to tell them what they did wrong. read more

No Wifi. No soap or paper towel in the rest room. Cash-only (but there is a third-party ATM inside with high fees - how convenient...). Our Lates were somewhere between mediocre and passable. Stopped by and had their cream cheese brownie, vegan expresso brownie, oatmeal chocolate chip brownie and a medium roast coffee w/maple syrup. And I liked all of it. And yes, I ate everything in one sitting. The shop is tucked away in some sort of courtyard in the Market. The staff are sooooo nice, friendly and helpful!! :) I only had plastic and US cash and they happily took my USD and when I couldn't find an outlet to charge my phone, they happily offered to charge it behind the counter. Its inconvenient that they don't take plastic but the coffee and food is good and I appreciate walking into an establishment w/staff that value their customers. read more

This placed looked good from the outside but looks can be deceiving. On a sunny day, it's hard to find a shaded table outside and it's stifling hot on the inside. To make matters worse, there is no Wifi. What modern coffee shop these days has no wifi? Being from out of town, this made it impossible for me to do any work while sipping my average mocha. read more

Busy any time of the day, but in a good way. Full of life and interesting locals. Amazing patio in a great little courtyard off York Street. Don't just go for the coffee, also grab a panini to go. They are really tasty and sell out fast. I often go and the one I want is sold out :( read more

Located in the Market, Planet Coffee has an ideal spot for people watching, relaxing in downtown and/or catching up with friends. They make great ice tea, homemade lemonade and chai lattes. What's even more amazing are there gluten free treats! When you find a place that makes great GF food that doesn't taste like cardboard, I'm sold. read more

Possibly my favourite small coffee shop in the city so far. Is located in a hidden little courtyard in the ByWard market area. Probably the best little hidden gem first date spot. You can keep cost down and still actually chat with a girl then take a walk around the market/ majors hill park. Baked goods are actually very tasty. Highly recommend the cheese cake brownie which alone draws me bake in here. I do wish they would get a little more adventurous with their coffee selections and try out some specialty coffees to bring in bigger crowds but they do the basics well. If you can find seating it is a great place to people watch from the patio or relax inside with a great atmosphere. Also wish that they would be open later as it would be a great spot to grab a coffee on a date after a meal in the market, just a suggestion. read more

I really like the coffee at Planet Coffee and am also a big fan of their baked goods. There isn't always seating available as it's usually quite busy, but whether I sit in and read a book on a Saturday morning or just grab a coffee to go, it's a good experience. read more

I've been going to Planet Coffee for a couple of years now. I used to like their coffee but I have found in the last few months that their coffee roasts are inconsistent ranging from bitter to over roasted on the verge of tasting burnt. Planet coffee is often where I start my Byward Market shopping ritual. I find they make a decent Americano. Maybe not as strong as I would like (the beans are not dark enough) but pleasant, nutty and always topped with a nice crema. The one thing I am not fond of is the menu or lack thereof. The sweets look lovely and are nicely showcased but I am a savoury kind of a girl and tend to gravitate towards the salty breakfasts. Toasted is even better therefore, a raspberry crumble cake isn't quite what I am looking for as my first meal of the day. Because there is no menu per say, I always pass on food. Well except for the last time because they were serving hot, fresh out of the oven Cheddar Pepper Scones. Now that grabbed my attention and pleased my palate very much! I absolutely adore the outside terrace tucked in the heart of Clarendon Court. Not a five star because it really could use a bit of sparkle and shine: I have a bit of an issue with smeared dessert cases and sticky counters. read more

Just been here. Asked for a cortado. Coffee did not look like one: it looked three times the size. (Hint: cortados are supposed to be short. It is in the name.) Coffee tasted coarse and bitter. I had three sips and Immediately returned it, "I am returning the coffee. It does not taste right." Nobody said anything. Nobody apologized. Nobody tried to rectify the situation. Love this café because of the laid back, friendly atmosphere. You almost always find a spot to drink your coffee and people come both in groups as well as alone with a good book as company. The prices are very reasonable and the espresso awesome. I'd recommend it to anyone and it beats the hell out of any starbucks coffee! read more

I absolutely love Planet Coffee! The atmosphere is wonderful, the coffee is delicious, and the baked goods are just incredible. During busy times, it may be hard to find a seat but I have never had to wait more than a few minutes before someone leaves a seat open. I visited here because I had already tried all other places for coffee in the courtyard and wanted to check this place out just because. I went on a Saturday and the place was packed. I wanted outdoor seating though so I was able to find a seat. The location of the seating is not as good as the other restaurants next to it. It doesn't get as much sunlight if any and you're kind of sandwiched between the buildings and stuck in the shade. Another thing is that it smelled really bad.. Like sewer or urine smell. The coffee was ok but the dessert was bad. I ordered the double chocolate cake which just tasted really poor in quality. My friend ordered some sort of berry filled cake and she did not like hers either. Also they only take cash which I think is so silly. They have an atm inside but you'll get charged $1.75 for a withdrawal. Who carries cash nowadays anyways? The total for 2 lattes and 2 cakes was about $20. Not worth it at all for bad tasting food and sitting in the shade in a narrow path that smells like sewer. No thank you. Definitely never coming here again. Go to The Courtyard or one of the other restaurants next door and you'll have a way better experience. read more
