Bluebird Coffee is a nice and warm cafe right in the heart of Byward Market. It is a great place if you are looking for a quick cup of coffee, an intimate place to have a chat with a friend, or a quiet place to study, especially during midterm examination season. I visited this cafe not too long ago with a friend as I was looking for a quit place to study for an exam. I was quite satisfied with the service and friendliness of the service I received. Although my latte took quite a bit of time to prepare, it was well worth the wait as the baristas definetely care about producing a good cup of coffee for each and every customer. Bluebird Coffee has a decent selection of selections that you would normally find in any cafe: Lattes, Cappuccinos, Espresso, Cookies, Muffins, Sandwiches, and much more. The prices are very reasonable if you are on the lookout for a good deal. The ambiance and atmosphere is average at best as there is a need for a decor change or a fresh coat of paint towards making the place more vibrant and inviting for everyone. read more

I'm from Seattle and spend most summers in Quebec. I bring my expensive coffee grinder with me but not my coffee roaster and I do miss roasting my own coffee. I happened on BlueBird Coffee when I was in the Byward Market and when I saw that they roast their own coffee I decided to give theirs a try. I had a great conversation with the owner about the coffees he roasted and he took the time to show me his current favorite from Rwanda. I've never been a fan of central African coffee but he convinced me to give it a try so I bought 5 lbs. Talk about a great cup of coffee. I really appreciated his attention to my questions and his guidance about his own coffees. I also liked the fact he roasts at about a City style which is lighter than a full City roast. I find the lighter roast helps to bring out the chocolate flavors in the coffee and it sure did for this Rwanda coffee. I highly recommend Bluebird for your coffee beans. Super cozy! I came on a weekend morning to start my day and tried the latte. The interiors are quite eclectic, and it was pretty packed with people relaxing or studying. There are comfy couches to sit on, and plenty of natural lighting. The latte itself was made well, and came in a cute cup and matching saucer. Good coffee, lots of teas to choose from, calm atmosphere. However, the seats are not great. Most square tables have hard wooden chairs that become uncomfortable after about 15 min. Additionally, Some soft couch-looking chairs are itchy and leave dust and white fluff all over you. By the time you realize, it's too late. Especially, if you stop by before going to work. One of the bathrooms I've gone to is absolutely disgusting-- nevermind the fact you need to request a key to go in there. I don't know about the other bathrooms. For their regular clientèle to spend about 1-2 hrs there, it's surprising they don't keep all bathrooms clean and tidy. These two things have ruined my experience there several times. I go there almost 2-3xs a week, but I won't sit anywhere unless it's on a wooden chair but still won't stay there for too long due to the bathroom situation and uncomfortable chairs. read more

Bought a pound of ground coffee at Bluebird a couple weeks ago - their "Espresso Blend". Price seemed average at about $15 (my wife checked-out with her debit card) and the barista even served me a sample espresso pull before we bought - all good. Once I got the coffee home and made a few cappuccinos with our Rancilio Silvia however, I found that the grind they provided was too coarse... cannot manage a decent pull from this stuff. I also noticed that the blend seems to have a lot of very light beige grinds in it - way more than I've ever seen in any other ground coffee. Not sure what/why that is (not a coffee expert by any stretch) but it is a little disconcerting. Your mileage may vary with your espresso machine, but the Silvia does not like this grind. read more

I don't know what happened to this place, but the baristas don't know the difference between a latte and a cup of hot water with milk and coffee. The only redeeming thing about the place is the atmosphere and the people who come here. Don't order any speciality drinks, it's a waste of money. They used to have a good barista from Australia, but she left. Now those that are left have no barista training what so ever. Sandwiches were good though, last time I tried them. read more

I'm one of those shallow people who is easily drawn in by pretty colors and a cute name, so I've been meaning to try this place for awhile. I happened to be in the Byward Market today, and was reminded of this when I was scrolling through Yelp and looking for nearby coffee places to turn me into a human again. I'd barely stepped a foot in the door when many pairs of eyes lifted irritably from their laptops to glare at me. I took a quick glance around and thought in amusement, "Help... Hipsters! Hipsters everywhere!" All of them faded into the background as I remembered, "Coffee. Already noon. Haven't had any. Need." Let's start with the service, because it seems like 90% of people giving negative reviews to places on Yelp are complaining about that. Let's get real: I've worked customer service for many years. I was good at it, so I can be hard to please because I know exactly what it's like to make customers feel like it's the super-duperous thing in the world to see them, even though I really feel like eating off everyone's faces. I digress again. The pair who were working were friendly. They weren't ingratiating, which I wonder, "Is that what people are expecting when they say that the service is rude?" Me? I look for actual politeness - as in not glaring at me, ignoring me, or using a nasty tone - and efficiency. I received both. In fact, despite the fact that it was very busy and there were tons of drinks rotating through, the cashier noticed that my drink had been skipped before I did and quietly informed the barista, who quickly made my drink *and* apologized with sincerity. The drink itself was average. Not terrific, but not terrible. I want to write something better than that because the staff was so sweet and kind, but it was just alright. They have a decent sandwich menu, all reasonably priced. There were a variety of baked goods, too. My dining companion said his croissant was one of the best that he'd ever had. I guess it was, since it was freaking huge and he wouldn't share. The struggle, right? All in all, I would go back, because the employees are nice, and the environment is cozy. read more

The brewed coffee is very tame... very light roast. I've tried three bags of their beans and it is always a disappointment. I'm not sure if it is the roasting or the quality of the beans. No Oomph! On the other hand, if you like a very very light roast coffee (sort of American style) that is not strong, this could be OK. It is great to see an independent cafe surviving in amounts all the chains. When in for a quick coffee with a companion, we ended up having Caffe Lattes, I had a ham and Brie sandwich, she had an enormous chocolate chip oatmeal cookie. The food was excellent as were the coffees. The environment was friendly and low key. Almost all the others customers were working on their computers. read more

This was my go-to coffee spot in the morning. The coffee was OK, nothing to write home about. But they have some good nibble food, i was a fan of their scones. There is a lot of space to sit down and work if you're looking for a coffee shop to work from. The wi-fi is pretty decently fast and i had no problem. I wont pick this place for good coffee, but if you just need coffee and a place to cool your heels, this will do. read more

Took a really long time for a slightly above average latte. I guess with the significant and very fancy espresso machine my expectations were a bit high. I ate their twice. Coffee is really good but the food is pretty bad. The first time wasn't great. We both had potato salad and a breakfast muffin. The breakfast muffin was the worse I have ever tried. It was pretty terrible. The potato salad was ok. The second time : took a sandwich and pasta salad. Both not good.
