Planet Coffee is a cute cafe by the Clarendon Lanes Courtyard. The inside is nice but I love the outdoor seating along Clarendon Lane. Note that the address is on York St but the store does not front onto the street, you have to go down Clarendon Lane to see it. I've had several baked goods from Planet Coffee and overall they are good. I've had their vegan brownie (a bit on the dry side), chocolate crunch cookie (delicious) and carrot cake (pretty good). Service is friendly and quick. Street parking or paid parkade parking only. read more

This place is one of my coworkers most favorite coffee spots in Ottawa. This, however, was my first coffee stop in Ottawa, and I honestly have to say it's neither bad nor great. I ordered a chai latte. It was beautifully prepared but there was something missing. It just didn't have that sharp pop that most chai lattes have. However, it wasn't bad, just not the best I've had. The place is cute and the service was on par. They have indoor and outdoor seating in a very quaint part of the city. I'll go back just to give them another chance. I got a regular small coffee with almond milk and a protein ball for $5. The coffee and protein ball were fine, nothing special, a bit pricy for what I got in my opinion. I read a lot of reviews complaining about the bad customer service... I did not have that experience, but I only interacted with the staff for a few minutes when I ordered. Also apparently they do not offer wifi which is not ideal if you are trying to study here. They also had indoor seating capped at 30 minutes, but I stayed for an hour and it was fine. I am not sure if this is because of covid or if this is their usual policy. The main attraction for this place is the ambiance of the location. The coffee shop is located in a cute courtyard in Byward Market which you can enjoy on their patio. They also offer indoor seating. Overall, I would go here again on a hot summer day to grab a coffee and pastry with friends maInly so I can enjoy the nice ambiance on their patio. read more

I was skeptical about visiting this place just because it seems like there is nothing special about this place. I have this thing about feeling if the place is great or not, but maybe because I studied and worked a lot in customer service industry. Their stuff is fine, but not really welcoming and the overall atmosphere is not great. The only table that was available was next to their washrooms and I decided to take a chance. Came in to kill some time between appointments, ended up lingering over a good coffee. Busy coffee shop in Byward down Clarendon Lane. I only had coffee (good, not burnt tasting) but there was a lot of cabinet cakes, slices, muffins etc on offer which looked yummy but I didn't try....this time! I will def be back to try something from the cabinet! And yes, more coffee! Was quite busy for 10am on a weekday so be prepared for a possible 5 min wait. I had a horrible experience at this place. The customer service and drinks are okay. This story is a bit long whirled and while it had nothing to do with the owner or staff, it did take place at their business and it profoundly and negatively affected me, as a young woman. I was in the bathroom( which is gross and needs to be cleaned way more often ) at their establishment and I heard someone trying to open the door with a key. I shouted out that it's occupied but he didn't hear me and I had the misfortune of having a fully grown man walk in on me while I was using the bathroom. Unfortunately I could not get up as I was indisposed and had this man walk in on me. He didn't even apologize ; just simply said he couldn't hear me. Ladies please watch out for this guy as he's almost 300 pounds, white male, with a beard that's at least 6'5 in height, and looks like officer Piscatella from Orange is the new black ( if you've ever seen this show). I'm guessing he lives in the area and most likely , this was an accident but we can't know for sure. It completely scared and startled me so bad that I'm still upset about it when I look back cause it was a threatening situation. It is a complete stranger after all and you never know what could happen or even what the intention is;we live in a messed up world and I don't like to take chances. Although I am not blaming the owner for another person's actions and although she did treat me to a baked good, I have to say I am very disappointed in this establishment all together. Firstly, as a woman, why am I not entitled to the same safety and dignity as other people? The owner has not made gender specific bathrooms and simply runs them with a key ( that anyone can get their hands on). I'm not sure how this happened as I don't work there but the fact that they can open from the outside is ridiculous and can make for a frightful situation and encounter. When I told her to maybe make a male and female washroom, she said that it's "too much." I just love how my rights and safety don't count for anything. If she likes, she can also make a gender neutral washroom but as women our safety and dignity needs to be respected and taken seriously. I hope it doesn't happen to anyone and she has fixed this or at least made it more clear for customers. Needless to say I won't be stepping foot in there again. read more

The customer service was not friendly at all. I was with my friend we had lemonade, ice coffee and vegan cookie. Drinks were not great they were just okay. The cookie tasted good but there was a fly in the cooked dough of cookie. When I show it to stuff working there, they didn't care, they didn't even say sorry. Dropped in for takeout baked treats. Cashier finished with paying customer and promptly slumped on the CR with arms folded supporting her chin. I had been standing in front of one of two display cases to her immediate left. She completely ignored me, while a barista looked at me now waving my arms and kept walking! I said; " Hello? Can someone serve me?" She now rousing said; "Yeah, if you walk over here." I guess so we could walk back to the display where I was??? I came to the cash. She asked for my order. I said five lemon squares, Her; " Sorry, what?" I replied as if to an imbecile; "FIVE LEMON SQARES!" A woman appeared from the back to provide my request packaged. Finally!!! I'm not sure why I haven't ever done a review on Planet - we go here often in the summer. In the past, I probably would have rated them, at *best*, a 3-star, as their staff was, quite simply, snotty and verging on rude. I'm not sure what's happened, but this summer their service has improved - the staff smile and engage. It's been a pleasure going in this summer! Their coffee is good, they have some awesome baked goods for when you need a carb/sugar fix, and the decor is perfect with earthy colours (and a slight patina of wear from ever-returning customs) as well an an interesting space. Even better is the outdoor seating in what I can only call an alleyway (but is really so much more). One thing to be aware of: no internet. With their volume of traffic, this may be a very clever tactic to keep people moving. Even without internet on a beautiful day, it can be tough to find seating! Imagine what it would be like if people were lounging for hours working or surfing. read more

Great Americanos! Excellent treats! Why doesn't this place have better reviews? I've been here a few times now and I've really enjoyed myself every single time. They have a really quaint, European style outdoor seating area in the back alleyway, with cobblestone, giving it a really sophisticated café feel, in my opinion. Amazing bread pudding and yo, get your pumpkin spice squares here! Really pleasant service and ample indoor seating options, too! Definitely my go-to café in the Byward Market area! Stumbled here one night recently and this placed looked very cute, especially with the outdoor seating right into the market. If you're looking to have a long outdoor chat with some old friends without using your phone, this is the place to be. If you're looking to get studying done and you're alone, not the best as it has no WiFi and only one power outlet. The black coffee is mediocore, but the prices are fair. The staff are very nice and the place is decently clean inside with nice seating and space. Cons- Theres no Wifi Theres only one power outlet, in the corner Poor place to study Pros- Staff were nice The location is beautiful as its in the market Theres gorgeous outdoor seating Would i come back again? I'm a regular at Planet Coffee as it has some of my favourite baked goods out of all the coffee shops in town and the staff is always fun to chat with. The sandwiches, soups and salads are usually really good. I especially love this location in the summer for the great people watching in the courtyard. read more

Coffee and service are just mediocre, but this place gets 3 stars because it is open later than the other independent cafes in the area (giving you an alternative to the starbucks inside Chapters) and the courtyard patio is lovely. Lots of seating and interesting art (I like the humpback whale painted on one of the walls!), and you can pick up flyers for different art/theatre/music events in the city. I have only had espresso drinks here, but their teas look really nice. They had a selection by the cash, so you could see what they look like and smell them. Most recently, had the carrot cake, which was moist and flavourful (cinnamony and also had a hint of banana, with a creamy chese frosting). However, for desserts, I still prefer Moulin de Provence. read more

It's the second time I take coffee here and it hasn't gotten any better since last time. It's not even cheap. The service and the sweets are okay though. However, it was nothing cozy on the inside - the tables were dirty and ours had crumbs on it. The prices at Planet Coffee are very comparable to other coffee shops (Starbucks, Second Cup, Bridgehead), the selection of coffees is great and the food is always fresh. Cookies are made and baked in-house on a counter behind the cash (in plain sight of customers...I found this to be very neat). All sandwiches and baguettes are made when ordered on freshly baked bread (in contrast to big-chain coffee shops which pre-make and refrigerate all their sandwiches) The atmosphere is amazing...Planet Coffee is located in one of the side courtyards in the Byward Market...this makes the outdoor patio lively enough with people coming and going....and quite enough to read a book or the paper outdoors. Most coffee shop chains have pay-per-use wi-fi "hotspots" (affiliated with Rogers, Bell)...while Planet Coffee doesn't have a dedicated wi-fi connection, you can still access the internet free of charge courtesy of the condo residents living near by. To sum things up: if you're tired of big-chain coffee shops and are looking for a refreshingly different atmosphere and setting with good coffee and good food then Coffee Planet is definitely worth a try. read more

Establishments in the ByWard Market can be expensive enough, but enjoying any of the ones inside the various beautiful and historic courtyards can border on ridiculously expensive. However, Planet Coffee is an option for people who want to avoid spending more than $10 while still enjoying this area of the market. Their prices are comparable to Starbucks, Bridgehead, etc., but the quality of their food is better. There are a number of comfy spots to sit within the cafe, but I'd recommend taking advantage of their outdoor seating in the courtyard whenever it's possible. This is a wonderful spot to be on a lovely summer evening, drinking tea and sharing a dessert with a loved one. read more

The food and drinks were good but the customer service was appalling. I ordered a london fog and didn't know there would be syrup in it and when I asked if it could be remade without the syrup the response from the barista was not very friendly and a little patronizing (because I didn't ask for no syrup to begin with). Then, the drink was remade with the wrong milk and the barista wanted to me to just accept it because "he already made it". When he overheard me telling my friends about what happened with the drinks he responded rudely to our conversation. I'm not sure if he was having a bad day or that's just generally how they roll. I work as a barista at starbucks and I worked as a barista in a small cafe and we would never treat our customers this way. I would think that a small business would have more reason to be warm and friendly with their customers. read more

Went to get my usual coffee and lemon tea bread as this would be my spot to go to when I go downtown. Have always liked this place until today when I came with my mom and sister. We were about to settle my mom down at the table before heading in to order but this blonde lady looks at us with our labotegga bag and immediately tells us "all food must be from planet coffee." First of all, where do you want me to put my grocery bag? Secondly, are you profiling us because we aren't white and you think we want to just sit outside on your chairs by the bench filled with bird poop just because as if there aren't other spots to do so close to the market if we wanted to just sit and consume our own food? I can't say I'm a fan of Planet Coffee. I'll give them that they have a great location being in the courtyard area of the market which is a nice place full of restaurants and patios in the summer so, if you are going to be outside, it may not be a bad place to go. On the inside though things fall apart as it is a disorganized, dirty mess. I almost thought they were in renovations but that doesn't seem to be the case. Granted, if you are just grabbing something to go, this may not matter but if you want to sit in a nice café enjoying your coffee and a treat, you should keep looking. On the drink and food front, the coffee wasn't bad but the food we had was bland. On the service side, they failed my one major gripe with coffee places. If you make a latte and you don't make enough milk leaving a 1 inch gap at the top, I shouldn't have to ask you to top it up (which I always do since you're paying enough for a latte and you get a full cup). Anyways, experiences vary of course but I wasn't happy with mine. read more

The staff look strained and unhappy, there's no WIFI available, and it's cash only, making it inconvenient for paying customers who only carry plastic. This coffee shop defaults as a Byward Market favorite as there's no other place to go to in the area unless you want to visit Starbucks or another chain. Hopefully in time we'll see more independent coffee shops opening in the Byward Market that will give us happier options. read more

Discovered while still in university, this place has become one of my go-to coffee shops. I love this place's vibe. I like the variety in coffees and teas, in savory and desserts - many vegan options there, but their soups aren't guaranteed to be vegetarian, so I stick to paninis and salads. There are witty quotes hidden in plain sight all over, tall windows and the decor is urban chic. The staff is friendly, the service is personalized (ex: they call your name, rather than your order) and the music is usually nice. The down sides are it is practically always busy and seating is limited. In addition, the prices are reasonable for drinks and most food items but their prices on paninis are outrageous for their small size. You could get a huge tasty sandwich at La Bottega for the same price. Located in a pedestrian mall in the heart of the Byward Market, it's close to the hustle and bustle, but is away from traffic. It's also great to sit outside as it gives the place a bit of a European feel. read more

I'm always up for a good cup of Joe, and I'm willing to go to the non standard Starbucks or Tim Horton's to try them. Unfortunately this place didn't do it for me. Located in the Byward Market, this coffee shop has a nice location, secluded from some of the busier places in the market, it has a nice courtyard feel and would be great to sit out there on a summer's day. Inside the shop the place is kind of industrial with some trendy decor. My wife had a latte and I had an americano. The one plus to these drinks were that they were piping hot. Outside of that nothing else was good. The latte had pretty much no flavour to it, and my americano was very watered down. I also didn't really understand why they would also serve some guy a piping hot cappucino in a glass mug with no handle. You should have seen the guy trying to handle this mug. Despite all this, this place has a steady influx of patrons and many of these people were ordering food as well. I would probably enjoy their food, but coffee shops must have good coffee first and foremost, and I didn't like it. read more

Planet Coffee is basically my go-to place for coffee when I'm in the Market area. I like the coffee much better than Starbucks, Bridgehouse or (shudder) Second Cup or Tim's, but not as much as I Deal Coffee (which is more out of the way) and the food I have tried here has always been good. Espresso drinks are very hit-and-miss here, it really depends on the barista. I've had perfect, sweet milk topped with cloud-like foam on some days and a bubbly mess of a latte on others, so I've started sticking to the brewed coffee instead. For ambiance you really can't beat Planet Coffee in the summer. They have an amazing patio under the trees in Clarendon Lanes that's great for eating, drinking, relaxing and people watching an afternoon away. Inside is very trendy/cool, with random advice printed on the walls and furniture. The music is always good and normally at a reasonable volume so it's good. Do be aware that they only take cash BEFORE you come so you're not stuck paying to use the overpriced ATM. There's no wifi here, so it's tough to get work done if you need the Internet, but great for getting work done if the Internet mostly distracts you. It is also typically busy, so while you will probably find a spot for a group to sit even with the diverse seating options don't count on getting, say, table space. When i feel like something hot: drip coffee or green tea. When I feel like something cold: iced coffee, iced assam tea. And the rhubarb bars. Oh, the rhubarb bars. Also a good place to grab soup, salads and sandwiches for lunch, if their offering that day appeals to you. read more

Went here for some coffee and catch ups yesterday. It proves to be a lovely place! I like café lattes in bowls and a bowled latte I got! It could have been a little warmer, by the time I got to the bottom it was cold and I'm not a slow drinker. Maybe the large bowl is too large? I don't know; I drank it all up anyway. Coffee shops can run together so it's all in the details, like providing a little spoon for me to scoop up the frothy milk on top. We shared a corner piece of a lemon square and the servers knew to include two forks. Intuitive. It was nicely caramelized with powdered sugar on top. The shortbread crust on the bottom was delicious and buttery goodness but took a sharp stab with a fork to get a piece off. And the lemony part was tart and creamy- just the way it should be. They serve food here too and only do cash. Take note of the interesting music, as well as the cute sayings and messages to you that are scattered around the walls and furniture. read more

The espresso drinks are not very good. The drip is passable. The baked goods i.e. molasses cookies - are great. I always get those. This business is a testament to location, location, location. Since there's no pressure to up their coffee game, even if it's in their name, why would they bother? Then again, most people aren't used to good, or strong coffee. The staff that recognize me are great, the ones't that don't aren't. From what I've seen at other patrons tables...the food looks decent So, When I have to meet someone in the Byweard Market, I get a tea and a cookie, no coffee. read more

After being away for two years, I was walking back to my favourite coffee shop and realized they renovated. The place looks great - definitely more spacious and I thought "I can definitely work on some stuff here". The only problem? No internet. But maybe it'll just encourage you to read a book or pick up one of the many magazines they have on the rack. The coffee here isn't bad and the cookies are pretty fresh. Just like the sandwiches (I recommend the veggie one, exact name has slipped my mind). The staff is friendly, the prices are the same as any other coffee shop, and the location...amazing! It's tucked away in the courtyard, secluded from the market, which makes for a pretty wonderful outdoor patio. Coffee is okay, but the pastries are good, panini are mediocre though. The food is expensive for what you get like 7$ for a panini.. Pastry prices are not bad, pretty standard pricing. But no wifi ...... In the summer they don't even have AC and have the windows opened which makes it seem like you're having your coffee and dessert in a sauna room. I love supporting local coffee shops and I would stop by once in a while to grab a cup of coffee and dessert to go. Service is good and fast. read more
