Dulce de leche and vanilla filled churros
Kate M.

I was in the mood for some sweet treats so I decided to try La Catrina's online ordering and delivery service. I ordered 6 filled churros - dulce de leche and vanilla and 2 slices of tres leches cake. Ordering process was super easy and the food was delivered right on time. The churros were still warm by the time they were delivered! They were crunchy on the outside, plenty of filling on the inside, covered in cinnamon as sugar - soo soo good! I prefer the dulce de leche churros but both are good. As for the cake, I was surprised how delicious it was! It is soaked in milk, and where this might sound different, it worked so well and gave the cake this amazing texture and taste! The vanilla cake with cream cheese icing (I think?) was fresh, fluffy and a delight! Sorry I ate it too fast that I forgot to take a picture! I am already looking forward to my next order!

Overall: Great tasting churros and friendly service, a quick late night bite! Food: Churros were made to order, fresh and hot. Great texture and taste Drink: Hot chocolate was large and pretty good. They put cinnamon in it though so make sure you ask for no cinnamon if you don't want that Service: quick and friendly, order at the counter and get your order at a table Atmosphere: Cozy with some eccentric Mexican art Pro-tip: it is one of few quick bite spots open late to satisfy your sugar craving

The art and decor makes this lil dessert restaurant so unique and interesting. The churros are also pretty good. I received it warm. It was fresh and not ridiculously overpriced (2 for 5$). I love condensed milk and wish they stuffed even more condensed milk in the churros. I would definitely come back.

The one thing I will mention right away: this place is NOT accessible for those with disabilities. However, you could sit at the small tables outside and have them bring you the order. We ordered the 5 small churros and a Mexican hot chocolate (about $16). The churros were amazing, fresh, delicious and warm! The hot chocolate was spot on! It is more of a dark chocolate, so If you don't like that, It's not for you! The large is actually rather small - keep that in mind as well. Overall, I'd return for the churros alone. Parking: byward market street metered parking Staff: friendly

After having appetizers at Patty's on Friday, I only needed to walk a few steps to arrive here. The interiors are really well decorated with wall art and frames. You walk downstairs to order, and you can sit on their patio or upstairs. I tried a "regular" churro, one filled churro (with condensed milk), and one specialty churro (with chocolate and almonds). The dough itself is not that flavorful, it seemed to lack much flavour. It was a yummy treat but at about $3-4 for each, was pricy for what it is. Very cute concept though, as the specialty churros and churro bowl looked very pretty.

It's an okay churro place. Staff is kind but when we arrived on a Tuesday around 8 pm there wasn't much left or too many choices. They have very few ice creams. The churros aren't that special but the atmosphere is okay. The churros are given with the dulce de lèche on the side. It's not inside so you have to dip it on the sauce they provide. It comes with ice cream but it's not that great. They have some purses that they sell but they are made out of plastic and too expensive. Experience ok but staff kind. Atmosphere as mentioned is nice. You'll see the photos.

Study date with my churro bits covered in chocolate :)

Best churros in town!!!! There aren't many dessert places in Ottawa, which is sad. This one is definitely my go-to. It's small, but a perfect date spot or a place to study.

My husband, kids, and I really adored this place-the sandwiches and churros were "out of this world"-DIVINE!!

This was an amazing end to our awesome day. We had just realized the little crêpe place in the Byward Market we were planning on for dinner was closed and I had had my heart set on a crêpe and I thought no food could make that disappointment up to me....but alas, we stumbled upon the AMAZING churros (and sandwiches!) of la Catrina!! I have to admit, having lived in Spain, I was hesitant when the lovely owner told me hers were better....but she was RIGHT! The four of us highly recommend everyone add la Catrina's churros to their "must-eat" list for Ottawa. We will certainly return there whenever we visit-and I will tell my students about it for our future school trips!

Moo Shu Ice Cream & Kitchen - Vietnamese coffee & brownie ice cream sandwich in packaging

There's also a small public square with some benches outside that will absolutely be useful for busy summer nights. My recommendation is to grab an ice cream sandwich bar from one of the freezers where you line up to order - great textures, fresh flavours, and lots of fun. Easy to split with a loved one! Prices are a bit high, but Moo Shu sources local ingredients (with the names of local farms on the flavour signs!), and pays employees a livable wage. It's a great place to stop by and support, while trying a delicious new flavour. Their new location is absolutely a step up :)

It really pains me to write a partially negative review of a really cool place like Moo Shu Ice…read moreCream & Kitchen, but if a flavor is inedible, that's a pretty big deal. I showed up around 9:00 on a random Tuesday and the place was impressively packed. The line was snaking out the door but it moved quickly. I've always been a huge fan of French Onion Soup, so when I saw a flavor called French Onion Scoop, I obviously had to get it. It's not good. The quality of the ice cream itself is top-notch (i.e. it's super creamy) but the flavor is just kind of gross. Plus there's a lot of sautéed onion in there and I think there's a reason onion and ice cream have never been combined before. I ate some of my cup but wound up throwing most of it away. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, Moo Shu was so preoccupied with whether or not they could make a French Onion Soup inspired ice cream flavor, they didn't stop to think if they should. (I should note I also tried a couple bites of their DunkaMoo's ice cream sandwich and it was really delicious, so obviously they are capable of making an excellent product.)

Ended up getting the pistachio and Dubai chocolate croissant. As for the drinks, we got the matcha and the Hojicha with espresso shots. They serve coffee from Hatch (which is probably one of my favourite back in Toronto). Unfortunately, we didn't get to try the croissants fresh but they were still tasted buttery and flakey. The flavour and sweetness was the right amount (perfect for my Asian tastebuds). The drinks were also really good! It was pretty busy inside but there's plenty of seating (might not be great if you want to chill and study but great for hanging out with friends). Service was good, staff is friendly and our order was made fairly quickly. I would come back and try other things on their menu if I'm ever around the area.

Plus, their croissants are big in size and are great for sharing. Their place is beautifully decorated with lots of seating. The workers were kind and friendly. We ordered the Croissant au Pistachio Rose and the Dubai Chocolate Croissant. Both had the perfect amount of flakiness and softness. The Dubai Chocolate was decadent while the Pistachio Rose was nutty with a delicate taste of floral.

I was in the mood for a Sfogliatella (lobster tail pastry), so my husband and I went to Little Italy to get one. Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana has been around since 1979, but I had never been there before. They had a large selection of desserts and gelato. We took our pastry to-go, but they have some seating both indoors and on their raised front patio and street-level side patio. The Sfogliatella was $7.49 which is the most I've ever paid for this pastry. Fortunately, it was delicious. Very crispy and flakey on the outside and softer on the inside with a generous amount of cream. I prefer the ricotta cheese filling slightly more, but I like the cream filling too. It was light and airy and not too sweet. Service was efficient and pleasant. The shop has a one way flow, you enter one door and you follow the arrows and exit a different door. The area to wait for service is narrow, so this process prevents congestion and crowding. I like it. Great for the occasional treat, but a bit too spendy for me. (77)
