TL;DR/The Short Version: Little takeout joint that sells…read moresweet and savoury crepes, choux pastries and other French sweets. Crepes were tasty. The Longer Version: Le Petit Paris just opened up September 2024. It's very hidden and I would have never just stumbled upon it, especially considering I'm rarely out in Kanata these days. Luckily I'm a weirdo and one of the things I like to do is poke around on Google Maps zooming in randomly on areas in and around Ottawa looking for new businesses to check out. That's how I found Le Petit Paris. It's tucked in behind a bunch of businesses and is not visible from the street. Fortunately the directions on Google Maps lead me there correctly. They are currently takeout only. The space is very small and there is absolutely no place to sit down and eat there. I got the Parisienne Crepe ($10.90) which contained ham, cheese and mushrooms. The crepe was made fresh. However, they use frozen mushrooms, which they microwaved (in the plastic bag it was packaged in, their space is open so I saw this). I get it, they're new and are still working out how much supply they need, but I feel fresh mushrooms would be better. Also, I'm not a fan of microwaving plastics for health reasons. I also think this crepe would taste better with some fresh spinach. Nonetheless, the crepe was tasty. The crepe itself was soft and had the right amount of chew. The ham was nice and smokey and the cheese provided a nice cheese pull ;) The crepe maker, Nene, was lovely. We had a nice conversation, en français, since she told me she was more comfortable in French. The man at the cash register (I think his name was Guy, because that's what was printed on the back of his shirt, lol) was equally nice and told me about their business and products. He was fluently bilingual, so I spoke in English with him ;) Their choux pastries looked good, but it was the end of the day, so they had limited selection left. I'll need to return earlier in the day to try these. There's free parking available in the lot that's shared with neighbouring businesses. I have a soft spot for small locally-owned independent businesses. I hope they do well and can relocate to a more visible/less tucked away location and maybe even have some seating for dining in, in the future. This was my first time having a croffle, but as a croissant lover, I definitely enjoyed this more than a regular waffle since it had that flaky texture of a croissant. The croffles were a treat to have, and made fresh after you place your order so it's still warm when it gets served. There are a number of flavors/toppings to choose from, and a few simple drink options (water, tea, coffee, pop) . We ordered the Strawberry and Buenos flavours. The person behind the counter was friendly, and the interior was quite cute with its black tables and chairs, and pink walls.

When he showed me what he got me, I put my nose up to it and said "just a waffle" This is not just a waffle , it's croissant pastry baked in a waffle iron, which takes it to a whole other level in the dessert game. But I wish the signage had been there in the first place. Even looking past these aspects of the experience, I just haven't been impressed with the actual cinnamon buns. They come in an awkwardly small box, and the plastic silverware on premise is far too flimsy to be used effectively. Eating a cinnamon bun should be the best part, but struggling to eat it really sours the experience for me. And then it didn't even taste very good. I think I won't try it again.

The drinks are mediocre. For instance, they charge almost 8 dollars for a small seasonal drink. It's not even good at all, as if tasteless. The overall atmosphere isn't welcoming due to the constant smell of burning, unfriendly stuff, and some of the kitchenware seems to be not cleaned well, for instance, the toaster, there is a lot of soot on it that constantly burns. The stuff isn't suitable for working in hospitality. They seem to not be interested in what they're doing, and that's why they do it badly and don't put much effort. That is what happens when the owner hires students for whom working in a cafe isn't a profession but just a side hassle. Also, their appearance wasn't nice. By saying that I mean their clothes didn't look neat and tidy, and their hair was uncombed and loose. To sum up, Red Door Provisions is just another overrated cafe that might make an impression of a cute and cozy place with delicious drinks and pastries at first but it turns out to be even worse than mediocre. Note that the address is on York St but the store does not front onto the street, you have to go down Clarendon Lane to see it. I've had several baked goods from Planet Coffee and overall they are good. I've had their vegan brownie (a bit on the dry side), chocolate crunch cookie (delicious) and carrot cake (pretty good). It has a relaxed cafe vibe where you can actually sit down, unwind, and get a little work done without feeling rushed or crowded. The service was friendly, everything tasted fresh, and the atmosphere made it easy to linger. It's a great little spot to treat yourself and recharge while wandering around Ottawa.
