This place has been here for decades and lots of people swear by it. And I'd love to give it 4 stars, but I just can't walking you find that it is smoke friendly. I am asthmatic, so we did the best we could finding spots in the back. Our waitress asked what we'd like to drink I asked what they have on tap. "Coke, Dr. pepper, Sprite." Their food was quite reasonable but the chicken fried steak was thin as a pancake and so overcooked that I could barely cut it. On the other hand, their mash potatoes and cream gravy was top notch. Overall I'll just chalk this up to catching them on a bad night. read more

I found this very unique restaurant out of desperation. I was in town working and had worked late.....on a Sunday no less. This meant my options to eat ANYTHING were severely limited. Thank God they were open. Because I really didn't want to chance McDs or 10pm gas station gut grenades. To start with the ambiance and decor is crazy cool. It's made up of multiple buildings connected over probably more than a century. One of the girls there told me originally the building was the first grocery store in Wyoming. When you walk in there is an old dinner vibe with a counter to the left and both seating to the right. There's multiple additions in the back that I think include a casino but I'm not quite sure. To the far left is a really cool old school ice cream shop. I was really tired when I came in so I just walked right up to the diner bar and grabbed a menu. I didn't notice at first but this is still a smoking restaurant. Well, as I'm looking at the menu I notice, the waitresses are chain smoking, the other customers are chain smoking. And as an ex smoker, I think they have that right. I just wish it weren't up front. They may have had a non-smoking section but did I mention I was really tired? So I just sucked it up. I ordered a Spanish omelet with hashbrowns and toast. It was good, solid but typical diner food. Not spectacular or anything but good. Great building to check out, decent food and open late in Douglas WY. What more could you ask for? read more

At first glance the food looks very simple , but these chili cheese dogs were the best I've ever had. It was the perfect combo of fresh onion, savory chili on a delicious bun. The hot dog itself was bursting full of flavor. Don't forget to try their Onion rings too. The food was hot and fast. You can tell someone took a lot of pride in making me this delicious meal! Wow, words do explain how bad this place is. Walk in and a guy 5 feet in at the end of the bar is smoking like a chimney (illegal). Hostess is at the counter. Never greeted, never offered a seat. I would love to be invisible, I really would but I am not. Dirty, disorganized, foul smelling. Place is about empty, not a shock given the environment. In hind site Is m glad they smoked us out and had horrific service. Probably saved us many trips the bathroom tonight. what an experience to be able to eat in such a piece of Douglas' history. family owned and ran, met one of the daughters who proudly shared their story, beginning with her great grandmother's log cabin. The food was hearty and fabulous with generous portions. the service was quite pleasant, friendly and prompt. I even bruised in the ice cream parlor to take a look at its charm, and the worker warmly greeted me as he was quickly serving up a small group waiting for their iced cream. I appreciated that they are never too busy to be hospitable. I'd highly recommend this place -- and save room for iced cream !! read more

I don't understand how people be eating here. Bone Steak taste boiled, the roast beef sandwich was sad, and the fries were still a little raw. Also, whole place stinks of cigarettes. Came by with our middle school track team after the "Best of the Best Track Meet". This is my first year acting as an assistant coach. The head coach said he has been taking the kids here for the last several years to celebrate finishing the track season with some ice cream. The staff members were very patient and friendly with a busload of hungry middle school athletes. The ice cream was good and the service great. I will definitely return on my own if I ever find myself back through Douglas. read more

Strange, rather spooky place, part of a complex of different old buildings. To get to the dining room you have to walk through the bar, which allows smoking, which was an appetite killer for us. And even though there is no smoking in the dining room, you can still smell it. It is very dark, and the decor is a mix of faux Tudor/gay nineties (think Shakey's Pizza circa 1976), with fake flowers strewn around. The only booths we saw were two obviously taken from a fast-food restaurant (hard curved plastic seats with attached table). The menu is a bit strange too -- for example, the club sandwich and patty-melt offer a choice of "ham, beef or tuna." Once we ordered, it took quite a while to get our food. I had the hard tacos which were fine -- totally basic but the lettuce and tomatoes were fresh. My husband had a ham and cheese sandwich (he wanted the chicken sandwich but it only comes breaded) which was also fine, with a nice thick slice of ham, except that apparently the only cheese they have is American. They have several different kinds of fries and he chose the crinkle-cut, which were undercooked and limp. I asked for extra lemon with my tea and the waitress explained they only had lemon-juice packets -- I haven't seen those for a while! And they were out of mayo -- Miracle Whip only. The good: super-friendly waitresses, one of whom even lent her phone to a clearly out-of-towner family so they could get wi-fi from her hotspot, and the funky ice-cream parlor next door. read more

This place has character. It kind of feels like a diner from a movie: friendly waitresses, colorful locals, interesting decor. The food was exactly what I expected. It was fried and greasy, with flavored aided exponentially by copious amounts of ranch dressing. I want to go back and try out the ice cream parlor. And yes, you can smoke in there. Not sure if the wind, the pickup trucks, or the giant expanses of yellow grass were any indicator, but you're in eastern Wyoming. Douglas is a railroad town, a cowboy town, a spittin' and swearin' town. Don't act all surprised when there's no braised oxtail or baby arugula on the menu, and the sweet old lady sitting at the counter next to you lights up a Marlboro. (the spaghetti pie she ordered looked bomb as hail.) If you don't like it, then you can git out. This is coming from a quinoa-eating, Pilates-planking commie who voted for Obama. But I do love a strong cup of black coffee in one hand, and a smooth, refreshing Kool in the other. read more

This is a 24 hour restaurant in Douglas, Wyoming of all places. Really amazing interior set up, like, I really should have taken some pictures here. Douglas is the home of the "Jack-a-lope" a jackrabbit antelope hybrid cryptid animal, and the Plains pays homage to it in style. The inside of this place could be like the cover photo of a Wyoming travel guide, it's that authentic and really cool. And it's cavernous, just goes back and back eventually to the bar. Real good food, too. I got in late (around 11pm) and ordered a burrito that was filling and delish. The friendly bartender even gave me information and helpful directions to a natural sight that I wanted to visit the next day, Ayers Bridge Arch Rock, about ten miles outside of town. I went back for breakfast and it hit the spot. The menu has surprising variety and I'm pretty sure breakfast is served all day. This is the type of place you dream of stumbling upon on a cross country road trip. Hopefully, one day I'll be back. read more

Love this place! It looks like they took parts of old buildings from the area and cobbled it together . Great atmosphere. We are breakfast people and travelers, so we have tried places all over the country. The Plains Trading Post ranks at the top. The pancakes are sublime. If you like licking ash trays then you'll feel right at home with all the thick smoke and horrid smell. We asked for a non smoking area and there are only three booths in the front. DO NOT COME HERE. I hardly ever give 1 star because I personally dismiss it from other reviews thinking the experience certainly could not be typical. However, my experience is with the food, which I imagine doesn't change much. For starters I got the nachos. Never get this. I received a plate with a reasonable amount of chips and loaded with canned cheese. The chips were stale, and the cheese was cold and not even close to being warm. My 11yr old daughter could have gotten this right. My entree was a burger (appeared previously frozen and was unseasoned) and I chose the spiral cut fries. The fries took up 2/3 the plate and were clearly fresh looking like it was just cut by some spiral potatoe cutting thing they must have in the kitchen. I was very hopeful with the fries. Finally something fresh. The fries were so soggy with oil, i'm guessing they dropped them in cold oil while it absorbed all the greese as it waited on the oil to get hot. In addition, the fries were not crispy or appeared to be cooked long enough. There are very few options for dining in Douglas, but during my 2 week stay this was the worst. I suggest making a trip to the Crick Water tucked inside the gas station (Sinclair?). read more

Run of the mill food, it won't upset you with the quality but it won't thrill the taste buds either. Not too expensive but for the price I would expect better with some of the dishes. Good little bar on the backside but limited selection on hand. However, the ice cream parlor on the western side of the building is TOP NOTCH, and it is my absolute number one spot for a cold cone in the county. If you happen to stop in for ice cream I most definitely suggest a scoop of the 'Beach Comber'. read more

An oddity on the road, The Plains Motel & Trading Post includes a bunch of buildings that are a mash-up of historic and/or old structures saved from the wrecking ball. The restaurant is diner/bar/dining room, and we choose to sit in the diner. Wyoming seems to allow smoking indoors, and so we found the non-smoking section...though of course, smoke has a tendency to wander. The kitchen was challenged to get the food out at the same time, and my companion's all-you-can eat salad was over and done with by the time my tuna melt arrived. There was a mountain of curly fries accompanying the really tasty tuna melt - bits of celery and onion were chopped into the finely minced tuna, served between slices of chewy rye bread. The tuna melt was delicious, and the curly fries just luke-warm by the time the plate arrived. Unfortunate, cuz they would have tasted even better hot. There's a fun old-fashioned ice cream/soda fountain connected to the diner/restaurant. Fun place to go with family, or to hang out in the bar, if the smoke doesn't bother... read more

I stop here every time I pass through. This restaurant is a great place to stop in, relax, and get some good food. The staff is always friendly and very helpful. I especially love that they permit smoking. It gives this place a very rustic and antique feeling. I have been coming to the plains on and off for a few years now. The pros are that if you want a basic burger and get the buffalo chips fries you won't go wrong. Sometimes the green chili is too hot and kills the taste and the put it in their Mexican dinners to heavy but mostly it's pretty good by Wyoming standards. Breakfast basics are good too. A big plus is the attached ice cream parlor. If you drink they have an attached bar and if you've had more than your fair share of booze you can go to an AA meeting upstairs every night at 7:30 pm. The cons are as such: food is way over priced, especially on dinners. It's the only restaurant open 24/7 and I know if the truck stop would open their cafe 24/7, they would give this place a run, but maybe Douglas is just too small to support 2 restaurants that way. Overall it's not bad, but don't expect fancy gourmet food. Waitresses are friendly enough but seem to be forgetful on things you ask for and I've never had one come to check on me. Their phones seem to be more important. read more
