Stopped in for a quick bite before a tour. Super fast service. Really enjoyed the anchovies pizza with capers. Def a must stop if you're in the area.

tl;dr the adventurous but poorly executed pizza al taglio simply doesn't live up to its legendary hype Even a fairweather pizza fan could tell you that one of the most famous pizzerias in the world is just blocks from Vatican City. This tiny, takeout-only shop would barely catch the eye if not for the massive crowd stretching out the door. The proprietor is Gabriele Bonci, dubbed the "Michelangelo of Pizza" by Vogue. He rose to celebrity status in Italy on the basis of his ambitious pizza al taglio ("by the cut"), made with premium, oftentimes surprising ingredients. In fact, Bonci claims to have developed over 1,500 different topping combinations. Although he has mostly retreated from public view, Bonci has recently been featured in Chef's Table on Netflix. The flagship store is tucked underneath an apartment complex. Sliding glass doors are sandwiched between faux brick walls littered with skateboard stickers. Just outside the door, a cardinal-red Take-A-Number distributes numbered tickets. Patrons are packed shoulder-to-shoulder within the warmly lit shop. The subway-tiled walls are minimally decorated with wine bottles, Bonci-branded pizza boxes, and a chalkboard with daily suppli specials. The main event is the pizza display, decked with a rainbow of varieties, each more vibrant than the last. My family arrived close to lunchtime on a weekday, and the crowd, while present, had not reached peak. I took my number and craned my neck to see the display case while waiting. While the pies were all unlabeled, a staff member patiently explained each to us once it was our turn. We decided on a wide variety of fritti and slices to split. The former, unfortunately, weren't particularly appetizing. The Mozzarella e Nduja Fritti was gummy and undercooked in the center, while the Carbonara Fritti was unpleasantly eggy. Across the pizza, the crust ranged wildly from extra-thin to focaccia-thick, with textures spanning crispy to fluffy to gummy. Of the varieties, I loved the Mushrooms & Truffle and the Mortadella; however, the remaining slices were either good-not-great or actively off-putting. The Zucchini Ricotta was surprisingly citrusy; the Prosciutto & Potato ran on fatty; the Rosa was eyebrow-raisingly spicy; the Eggplant was loaded with a heavy, baba ghanoush-like puree; and the spaghetti-stuffed pizza was gluttonously hearty but otherwise bland. At nearly $60, and with a crowd trailing out the door, I was expecting Bonci to be life-changing. However, it was just alright. The slices were inconsistent and only lukewarm. Unfortunately, Bonci Pizzarium feels like little more than a tourist trap at best; you can easily find better (and cheaper!) al taglio elsewhere in Rome.

pizzas of the day from the line to order

After visiting some tourist attractions we walked out to Bonci to try some local authentic pizza. The line was out of the door, but it moved at a decent rate, i'd say about 15-20 minutes. Once you order your pizza inside it's baked in the oven for a few minutes to heat it up so there wasn't much waiting after ordering. We tried three different pizzas and enjoyed each of them. We also tried the orange and blue sodas they had in the fridges. There's not much room to sit down but they had some bar tables to eat and stand. We ended up walking nearby to a bench area to enjoy our food.

I was looking forward to eat at this place. I traveled about an hour. Out of my way. Just to stand in line for an hour to get some slices that made us all feel sick and nasty afterwards! The ambience is not so great. And you are in a less than ideal neighborhood to eat your pizza. Either on the curb, or against the building somewhere. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and they were really stoked on their pizza. I really appreciated their strong sense of pride in their craft. Overall, they use top notch ingredients, and the quality of ingredients in the pizza is excellent. According to their menu. I basically spent $100 for six slices of pizza! No joke! Be prepared to pay a lot as you pay by weight, and you have no idea the weight of the pizza, and what is laying underneath the cheese. The margarita pizza, and the meat sandwich was the best pizza of the ones that we ate. The zucchini was also nice, but the cheese was less than flavorful. It would be awesome If there was a bathroom in this location.

Had some great pizza here in Rome. I got the potato & egg, porchetta & burrata anchovy pizza. They were very good and very flavorful. There was so much variety and choices for pizza types and ingredients to choose from! They ask for how much in weight do you want in pizza, so keep in mind what and how much you want. They will then reoven the pizza and it will take some time to get your pizza, especially when the lines are long which is often. The staff is very patient and helpful in guiding you in which pizzas are available and they also have suppli balls which I had more stomach to try. There isn't much seating so I walked to the park next to it to eat and relax.

On our last night in Rome for our last meal in Italy, my mom and I came to Bonci for some slices of pizza. Because it was a Sunday night and most people typically lineup for a slice at lunchtime, we walked straight in to the counter and were the only ones there. They had a wide variety to choose from, and we ended up asking for some recommendations from the staff. They cut us a slice of the meatball pizza and a white slice that had prosciutto and pecorino. The crust was crisp and crunchy which I appreciated because it held up to the density of the toppings. We both felt the prosciutto pizza was slightly better than the meatball, but both had great flavor. Although a bit pricey, this place is definitely delicious and worth a visit if you find yourself in Rome.

A bit out of the way and hard to get to without a Rome day pass, but definitely worth it if you're trying to get a bite to eat after visiting the Vatican! This was the best takeout pizza we had in all of Rome! They have so many selections and you order by taking a ticket and waiting your turn. You'll see both tourist and locals grabbing a bite here. Make sure to arrive before the 12 clock lunch rush or you'll be waiting over an hour in line. We came at 1130 and only had to wait 15 min. They change their rotations of pizza as they run out so you might even want to order twice! In order to make sure you get all the slices you want. A piccolo slice comes out to 8 euros and I recommend 1.5 per person.

Bonci was by far the best pizza I had in Italy, and probably the best I've ever had period. We walked about 30 minutes from the center of town and it was absolutely worth every minute. We ordered a few different cuts of pizza from both the recommendation of locals standing outside and what looked good through the glass. They cut and weigh your pizza right in front of you which I found really cool! I didn't get a great picture of the suppli alone which is telling of how amazing it was. I can't wait to go back one day just for this. 10/10

Pumpkin and onion on the left (that didn't work for me). Salami and cheese on the bottom right. Mozzarella cheese on the top right.

Highly regarded pizzeria that is take away only, other than some counter space to stand and eat your pizza. You must take a number and approach the counter once your number is called. There will be numerous pizza options in the case to choose from, as you cannot place a custom pizza order. All pizza is sold by the weight, not the slice. The actual breading of the pizza is great, but the topping combinations may or may not work, depending on what is available on a given day.

Nothing fancy but a roman palace for pizza

First off you ok I can't go to Rome without stopping by this gem . The walk up ordering is slightly stressful if you don't speak the language . We were fortunate to get help from a young lady who spoke great English . We did our best trying to speak Italian but she was amazing in her demeanor and patiences . This amazing small spot was clean and ambiance is perfect for an Italian eatery. The pizza was perfect and by far the best roman style pizza we have ever eaten . Great little area just next to the pizzeria. This is their take out place only.

Mushroom pizza and Pumpkin pizza

Got here a little before noon and luckily escaped the crowd! There was basically no line and got to order almost immediately. I will say it was difficult to order since there weren't any signs, but I ended up getting the mushroom pizza while my friend got a pumpkin pizza. The mushroom one was overflowing with toppings and had the perfect ratio of mushrooms to bread. My friend found the pumpkin pizza to be incredibly unique and loved the addition of rosemary as a topping. Food was amazing, but I must admit that it was pretty overpriced. I feel like I could easily find the same quality pizza for half the price, and I'm a little confused how this place got so famous. There were also hardly any spaces to eat, both inside and outside, but the food makes up for all of that.

I DONT UNDERSTAND THE HYPE This place was featured in a few YouTube's as I was doing my research on good eats by the Vatican. Walked up & there was a line down the block. The place is SMALL. Literally just meant to order & go, no seating outside of a few standing tables. You pull a ticket then Wait to be called. Wait was about 45min, we came on a Saturday Afternoon. You order by slice. Annnnnd the food was COLD, even after sitting under heat lamps. Sauce lacked seasoning. My friends tried the cheese balls & were not fans

You have to go to Bonci if you're in Italy. Honestly, any slice would probably be good. My personal favorite was the original (just tomato and mozzarella) and the one with anchovies. I didn't wait very long since I can pretty early for dinner but I heard there is a line typically. Nowhere to sit so most people stand and eat.

Everyone needs a trip to Italy, if nothing more than to enjoy all of the food…read more When you've landed, you're hungry, and it's not lunch time, and it's not dinner time, you may end up, selling for whatever you can find is open We were absolutely starving, and wanting to indulge in our first Italian meal, what do you do when you're in Italy?! You may want to indulge in pasta or pizza! We walked in, and we were immediately seated. Air conditioning is nonexistent, and on a hot summer day, it would've been cooler to dine outside. had that been an option, and it was 95° out. As soon as we were seated, we were immediately told that Pizza and some of their baked Italian dishes were not going to be available. Boo. The wait staff seemed fairly nice, and offered to bring us glasses of water. The glasses were super tiny, and thankfully the waitress brought over a carafe of water. We asked for a few suggestions, since both of us had been craving pizza, and she suggested the Carbonara. She said it was one of the best dishes. While we were waiting for our food, several other tables were immediately filled up with other customers, families and friends alike. It was interesting that those tables were served pizza... I'll just leave it at that. The carbonara Was anything less than delicious. We both found the pasta to be barely cooked. Not al dente, but barely cooked. The seasoning was mediocre, and there was very little pork, which is supposed to be the highlight of this dish, in this dish. Diners tip: if you are not a local, keep in mind that your version of Customer Service may or may not fit what Customer Service is in Rome. Despite being hungry, I had a hard time, finishing the food, let alone actually eating it. The waitress only came over at the end to drop off the check, and when she noticed that I had barely eaten anything, first gave me a strange look, and then asked about it. It was definitely one of those situations where saying something was wrong would've been met with unwanted attention. This is in a place to add to your must try list... There are plenty of other places, even in and around this area that more than likely would be a better choice.

Bufala pizza with red sauce and lasagna was excellent. Seating was fast and good serviceread more
