I stopped into Back 9 while passing through Oxford on my way to an event in Jackson with some…read morefriends in entertainment. It was later in the evening, and I wasn't sure how many places would still be open that late elsewhere in the state, so stopping in such an iconic college town felt like the right move. Unfortunately for me--but probably great for business--it happened to be a home game for Ole Miss Rebels baseball, so the entire area was packed. I tried a few places before finally managing to grab a single seat at the very end of the bar at Back 9. The atmosphere was immediately fun and energetic. Between the sports simulators and TVs broadcasting games throughout the space, it felt exactly like the kind of lively college-town sports bar you'd hope to stumble into on a busy game night. The staff was clearly stretched thin because of the crowd, so I don't hold the slower pacing against them. If anything, it reminded me how differently high-volume bars function from city to city. There are probably a few things college-town bars in general could learn from the efficiency of Nashville's Broadway spots, but that's more of an observation than a criticism of this restaurant specifically. The menu is exactly what you'd expect in the best way possible--handhelds, flatbreads, comfort food, and crowd-pleasing bar favorites. I ended up ordering the Chipping Cajun pasta, and honestly, it completely surprised me. The balance between the spice and cream sauce was excellent. The bell peppers, onion, and garlic added depth to the flavor while also giving the dish a nice variety of texture. The seafood was evenly cooked and genuinely delicious throughout. It actually reminded me of one of my favorite dishes back in Nashville at Darfons Restaurant & Lounge, which I definitely wasn't expecting from a busy college-town sports bar. Overall, Back 9 ended up being one of the highlights of my drive through Oxford. If you're passing through town, especially on a game weekend, it's absolutely worth stopping in and trying for yourself.

Ordered 3 times and has been great every time! It was a learning curve at first because being authentic NY pizza some of the toppings just weren't for us... but we asked questions and figured out what we like and don't. Got the mulberry sandwich the other night and it was fabulous. My heart goes out to these owners!! They are opening a new style restaurant in such an UNBELIEVABLY difficult time to own a restaurant. First off opening a new restaurant has a learning curve for owners and employees. Second the terrible labor shortage crises makes hiring enough good employees impossible. Third the extreme rise in food cost makes it hard to compete with big corporations. My family thinks the food and service have been great and we will keep coming back. read more

I found this gem of a pizzeria on a recent trip to Oxford while visiting my son at Ole Miss. I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at the menu. This is not your ordinary, everyday pizza place. Everything on the menu looked delicious...I had a hard time deciding. So...I left with 3 pizzas, a hefty helping of lasagna and sandwiches on homemade foccocia bread. Needless to say, my son and his roommate were very happy when Mama showed up! During the times we are currently living in, I try to support small businesses...they really depend on us. Best place to get pizza in Oxford. Pizzas are made with real ingredients and can be easily customized with authentic NYC pizza taste. The only "downside" is that there is no fountain drinks, but anyone who has ever been to NYC will know that this is the norm. All and all 5 stars and this place is sure to be a hit to both locals and visitors to Oxford, Mississippi. read more

It's unfortunate because the experience and the food was so horrible, that our entire party has vowed to NEVER return. I will say that our waitress ( #Poo ) was wonderful. She did the very best that she could, given that she was not informed of any details surrounding the party before we arrived. She was called in to work our party with no help AT ALL. I had to personally go upstairs and ask that someone, anyone, come help her take orders. Upstairs, the restaurant was practically empty, therefore one of the two girls standing around should have been instructed to stay downstairs and assist. I should not have had to go beg for help. The blonde girl sent the very pregnant young lady downstairs to help take orders. And bless her heart, she was running up and down the stairs all night trying to make sure we were taken care of. Things had gotten so out of hand, my sister, literally grabbed a tray and help wait tables!!!! Yes, you read that right, my SISTER started running drinks and helped bring down food! And between food and dessert, I was bussing tables!!! Yep me, heels and all... But let's get back to the food. No one received hot food. Out of all the steaks, fried catfish, pasta, appetizers, etc, the only hot thing on our plates were the baked potatoes!! Dry baked potatoes at that (no butter, sour cream, nothing). But hey, at least they were hot!! And the pasta was flavorless. We were finally told that since we ordered from the menu it caused the process to be slower. So I asked what we were supposed to do, if not order from the menu. One of the waitresses stated that parties the size of ours are supposed to order platters only. Well this would have been great information to have at booking right?!?! NO ONE told my mom this when she booked. And if this is what they typically do, why were the trays or platters not started as we were arriving and getting situated???? This could have helped out tremendously. The $150 plus tax my mom and her siblings spent to reserve this space was like flushing money down the toilet. Because everyone there left hungry and having to go to drive thru somewhere on their way home. Oh and my steak was given to our Dobermann puppy (Scooby-Doo loved it) And my poor granny (the bday girl) said she was happy to see all her children and grandchildren, but she NEVER wants to see Montgomery's On Main again!!! And to top it all off, when my mom called to speak with the owner today, he blew her off, had an attitude, claimed he couldn't hear her, and told her to call him back some other time, and hung up!!!! Cold food, missing food, children starving because it took forever for their food to arrive, and the birthday girl was literally served last!!!!!! Like WTH. Her food took so long she was asking if her order could just be canceled. I'm all for shopping and eating local, but this, this was ridiculous and uncalled for!!! Wife loved the chicken and dumplings, good flavor and tender chicken. She got a side of sweet potato casserole and loved it. I had a bite and it was delicious for certain. Step son had the fried catfish, he is not a big seafood eater but he absolutely loves the catfish. I had a big piece and it was cooked perfectly and tasted great as well. The staff was outstanding, the service was great and the food was excellent sans the cornbread. Ajax is a neat little diner in the heart of Oxford. It's a little pricey as is everything in this college town, but it was worth the visit.
