I like Pizza King, but it seems the brand has lost some of the quality over the years. Some locations are able to make tasty pizzas, while others are just average. I don't know why, but the Pizza King pizzas taste better in Muncie, Indiana. Regardless, Pizza King is expensive. Other pizza brands make great pizzas at half the cost and we tend to use those brands more now than Pizza King. I just wish I had more complements to say about this Pizza King. Maybe someday, but it takes change and commitment. read more

I grew up in Muncie where Pizza King was founded. On a weekend trip last week I stopped at the Pizza King in Carmel IN ands got a 16" royal feast. Well is was horrible. It is what it is. And what it is is a thin pizza with no crust edges, cut into squares. You either like this type of pizza or you don't. I happen to not particularly enjoy Pizza King pizza, but I wanted to give it a shot because a) I heard that each Pizza King is independently owned and a little bit different, and b) I was looking for a dinner that was somewhat chess-themed. You see, I was doing a chess-themed movie night for my children, wherein we'd watch the 1993 film "Searching for Bobby Fischer" while eating Pizza King (king chess piece -- get it?) and eating Pepperidge Farm Chessmen butter cookies for dessert. I'm so clever, aren't I? It was either Pizza King or Burger King or Dairy Queen for dinner, and because I had never visited this Pizza King in Carmel, I settled on Pizza King. This Pizza King also has tacos on their menu. How could I not order a dang taco at a pizza joint if they offer one? So I ordered three hard tacos, and they were exactly what you'd think hard-shell tacos would taste like from a Pizza King. The tacos came with ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream. The shells were a little weirdly chewy. Sometimes, you do things for the lulz, and this was the case with the tacos, which were a fun experiment, but I don't think I'd order tacos from a pizza place ever again. I called to place an order for delivery, and they tried to tell me I'm out of their delivery zone, when I tell them I fall directly in their map on the website, they back tracked and said oh ya we can deliver. Then they tried to play the "sorry we can't hear you". Everytime I tried to speak. I had full bars of service, and in a quiet room. I've never had issues with my phone, so I thought maybe it was me. I called back & they didn't answer. I called my husband to check my cell connection, and he could hear me crystal clear. No issues. Sounds like Pizza King workers were being lazy and didn't want to do their jobs. If they were short staffed, and couldn't deliver, then I would have understood and been happy to pick up. But the fact that they pull this shit is unacceptable. Instead I called again, no answer. I call on a different phone number and they answer right away..I honestly can't believe how unprofessional these guys were. If you don't want to deliver and make pizzas, maybe don't work at a pizza place. Hopefully the manager/ owner of this location can correct these behaviors. I'd forgotten just how good this pizza was from my days in grad school up in Muncie (Ball State). I don't know why other pizza shops don't finely grind their sausage and pepperoni to provide edge to edge coverage like Pizza King does. Each Pizza King franchise seems to make their pizza slightly different. The Carmel location makes a very good Pizza King pizza. My favorite is the sausage. I like the teeny tiny bits of crispy sausage that they cover it with. The man working the counter was super nice and appreciative when we picked up our carry-out order. Only slightly negative thing that stood out was the price. I wasn't paying but 2 pizzas for $50+ seemed steep. Check this location out and support your local pizza king! read more

Every pizza king brings their own personal flare to their recipes. For me, pizza king has a special place in my heart. My hometown king pizza was always a must when I went home. Since we live in a new city, we figured we had to try our local Pizza King. We placed a takeout order for the 10" Royal feast, 8" mixed sauce cheese, and an order of breadsticks with nacho cheese. We ordered on a Friday night and they said it would be about 30 minutes for pickup. The breadsticks were doughy goodness on the inside and the nacho cheese reminded me of the nacho cheese you get at the ball park. The pizzas were good! So disappointed with the service at this location. We have went several times and have not been treated well. We have continued to give them a chance and order again. Tonight Jeff (owner) was more than disrespectful. I've never been spoke to so rude and ugly by any business. After ordering I called back to let them know I had ordered at the wrong location. We drive over 30 minutes to get to this Pizza King as it reminds us of the one we grew up with on the East side of the state. They are friendly and even on busy weekend evenings can get your pizza ready for pickup within 30 minutes. Plus it is wonderful to eat cold and doesn't turn into cardboard like other brands do. What makes Pizza King different, it's small toppings so you taste all the ingredients in every bite. Some say it's the best tasting pizza ever, it's one of my favorite and satisfies like no other. I file Pizza King under, "all pizza is good". That being said, it is not my first choice. Positives are that they load the toppings, breadsticks are better than average, and they have good ranch. Negatives are that there is little to no crust, the texture is a little soggy because of the amount of toppings, and it is just kind of a basic recipe. I have been a huge fan of Pizza King pizzas for decades. I had never tried this location. My thin crust sausage pizza was just ok. It had way too much corn meal on not only the bottom but dusted all over the top. The pizza had a slight sour taste and a slight bitter taste. VerdicTL;DR: What is with Indiana and its love of badly implemented Chicago-style thin crust? This place is like Bazbeaux, with a similar style of pizza, and the same veritable cheese avalanche problem. Except there's less sauce, the sauce is very neutral in taste, and the cheese is provolone for some reason. Apparently this is a franchise out of Muncie IN and is well beloved there. If you grew up eating something, chances are you will have fond memories of it; those memories themselves become part of the way that you interact with food for the rest of your life. There's a little ramen-ya in Canton MI called Matsuchan that will always be my benchmark for ramen, even though by now there are objectively better choices (like Kizuki here in Carmel IN, for instance). It's clear from many reviews of Pizza King that there's a similar phenomenon happening here. So I ordered a large cheese pizza for our family dinner. Large pizza here is 16-inch, tavern-cut. The crust is not as soggy as Bazbeaux and not as crispy as Some Guys. The sauce is all the way to the edge and it tastes like pure crushed tomatoes with a ghostly hint of salt and oregano. The cheese is provolone and -- while not what I'd expect on a pizza -- isn't unpleasant. The problem is that there is way too much of it. This is cheese at OVER 9000 BEHOLD THE POWER OF CHEESE Super Cheesian Level. That makes the slices thick, greasy to the point of freely dripping oil, and likely responsible for a good chunk of the cardiovascular disease in Muncie. So if you like that -- and clearly there's a market for this kind of pizza here -- then by all means order from Pizza King. The problems for me are as follows: (1) Some Guys does this concept better; (2) they are pretty expensive for what they are -- $20 for a large cheese pizza; (3) if you don't absolutely need a Chicago-style thin crust, there's superior pizza at Mellow Mushroom a few blocks away; and (4) ZOMG CHEESE APOCALYPSE. I grew up near Muncie (Cowan) so Pizza King was a staple of my growing up years. Those of you from the area will certainly remember Clara's/The Mug on Madison Street in Muncie. I have no idea how many hours I spent and how many pizzas I ate there. But I digress. This often happens. Pizza King restaurants can vary widely in quality and taste, and not all of them taste like Muncie. (or whatever town you grew up in) This one, my friends, tastes like Muncie. The Royal Feast is spot. on. Every time, it's spot on. It's a small store, so sometimes they're swamped. There have been times there's been a bit of a wait to get our pizza, but it's never been terrible, and we understand that right at peak hours, a small store struggles to keep up. I love Pizza King pizza. So much so that I overlook the inconsistency of service that this one has. Sometimes you will call in an order and it will be ready right on time. Other times they won't even start your order until it is supposed to be done, so you're waiting for 20 minutes. I can overlook this kind of thing because the food is so good. But this week I had a terrible week and decided to grab some Pizza King as a guilty pleasure after work. So as normal, I called to place my order from the car so it would hopefully be ready when I got there. No answer. I called again, no answer. Waited 5 minutes, no answer. I was so close I just decided to go and see what the problem was. When I got there I was disappointed to see a sign posted "Closed - Oven problems". I get it, stuff happens. And I get it, Pizza King isn't the most technologically advanced place and isn't award winning cuisine. But I can't believe they couldn't at least have an answering machine or voice mail or something informing loyal customers of the issue. This tells me they just don't care about the inconvenience they caused their loyal customers. And honestly given some of the attitude I've dealt with there, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.
