The meal came with a baked potato, steamed vegetables, and two dozen steamed clams, all washed down with a cold bottle of Briar's root beer. Pub 199 feels like walking into a natural history museum inside a hunting lodge, surrounded by taxidermy and rustic decor. The service is consistently excellent, the atmosphere is comfortable, and the prices remain very reasonable. If you enjoy classic New Jersey spots with character and reliable food, this is one worth visiting. If you've been here, feel free to share your experience or leave a review.

Tonight I ordered the 2 doz calms (always a must) and the steak and lobster tail. It was AMAZING as always. My normal order is the whole lobster but now that they offer 2 tails I always will get that. I'm excited to try the lobster bisque which I didn't try tonight. My only complaint tonight is the waitress came over with a dish of fries for my husband who ordered the baked potato (omg so good also order the baked potato) and apologized for selling out of the potatoes. 5 Minutes later we see the table next to us get their baked potato's with their dishes. My husband was so mad. Don't lie to people when we love your food. Fries could be better. (We left them). And their vegetables are always soggy and not worth eating. Back to the positive the seafood and steaks are always worth looking over the sides. Not the baked potato, keep doing what you're doing with them. Except stop lying to the customers.

Food: We started with garlic bread that was absolutely awesome, followed by grilled octopus with a perfectly balanced, succulent marinade. I had shrimp with pasta, while my mother-in-law enjoyed a fillet of sole stuffed with crab meat and my wife had the cavatelli with broccoli. Everything was flavorful, well-prepared, and satisfying. Service: Our waitress, Casey, was excellent. Always checking in and very polite throughout the meal. She made the whole dining experience feel welcoming and attentive without being overbearing. Aesthetic: The restaurant has a warm, inviting look with stonework accents along the walls and an open barn-style concept. The lighting creates a comfortable atmosphere, and there's plenty of seating for both small groups and larger gatherings.

My husband and I split the Florentine Omelette with hashbrowns and the Ricotta Pancakes. The omelette was tasty, though the potatoes weren't quite my style. The pancakes, on the other hand, were a standout--light, fluffy, and full of summer flavor with blueberries and a hint of lemon zest. The restaurant itself has a bright, open feel and would make a great spot for a private event.

In a world where corporate-owned and franchised seafood restaurants are multiplying like.. guppies,…read moreit's getting harder to find a good, independently-owned seafood restaurant in the area. Denville Seafood / Codmother's Cafe on Broadway in downtown Denville stands out for all the right reasons -- with incredibly fresh and tasty locally-sourced fish, a welcoming midscale atmosphere, and staff that actually cares about the customers and food they're serving. Denville Seafood / Codmother's Cafe operates as a seafood market and restaurant. The market offers a variety of fresh seafood all of which is locally-sourced from the New Fulton Fish Market in NYC as well as seafood-based soups and salads prepared on-site to enjoy elsewhere. The other side of the shop offers a sit-down restaurant where the chef can prepare anything sold in the market in a variety of ways for diners to enjoy in the indoor or outdoor dining areas or to go. The menu is extensive and any of the fresh fish -- from bass to tuna -- or shellfish sold in the market are available in the restaurant in a wide variety of preparation styles -- baked, broiled, and fried with white wine-butter sauce, rosemary, lemon-caper, scampi, or teriyaki sauces. Dinner platters (which range from $28 to $45 as of December 2025) include coleslaw, steamed vegetables, and your choice of fries, rice, potatoes, pasta, or extra steamed vegetables. Your imagination is the only thing limiting the number of iterations available. For diners who don't enjoy seafood, Codmother's Cafe offers linguine with or without broccoli, chicken tenders, and the New Jersey-staple Chicken Parmigiana. The atmosphere in the dining room hits that perfect "midscale" sweet spot where it feels special enough for a nice night out, but still relaxed and welcoming for a casual meal with friends and family. The high-energy servers are clearly on top of their game and make the whole experience fun. We'll definitely be back. PRO TIP #1: Be flexible with your order. With all of the seafood sourced daily based on what's available at the New Fulton Fish Market and sold in both the market and restaurant, there's a real risk they might run out of something on the menu so make sure you have a back-up in case your initial craving is 86-ed for the day when you order. PRO TIP #2: Free street parking is available on Broadway and 1st Avenue as well as in the Denville municipal parking lots located on 1st Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue.

The sword fish was excellent, huge big piece of succulent fish cooked to perfection on a bed of mixed root vegetables. The sauce was light and bright and a perfect pairing. The coleslaw was crispy and fresh and not too much mayo. Wait service was excellent and super friendly. Would definitely come back.

This review is a complete mixed bag for me as there is pros and cons to the experience. Pros: The Argentinian chicken wings were really tasty and crispy and good. Both of our burgers were really good. The waitress was pleasant and quite good as well. so for these reasons, it was a pleasant experience and rather tasty. Also, we didn't wait too long for a table with a 7 o'clock reservation. Cons: Only six wings come to an order for the Argentinian chicken wings and they charge $15! I think that's rather expensive. Although the French onion soup had great flavor, it was a salt bomb! I couldn't believe how much salt was in it! Also, the lack of substitutions for certain things like fries without enough charge for an already pricey burger is a bit much. Beers were expensive as well. 7 bucks for a 4 ounce IPA? Not thank you. So if you don't mind paying top dollar for a ver good tasting burger and wings, then this spot will definitely deliver on flavor. But would I choose to spend this much?? No. Not in the least. The choice is yours on what you are willing to spend for pub food at steakhouse prices.
