Both times, I ordered a small four-square pizza with pepperoni and black olives, and Loui's absolutely knocked it out of the park. Don't let the word "small" fool you either -- this is a seriously filling pizza. Even a hungry customer is likely to leave full, satisfied, and already thinking about the next visit. What really stood out to me was the generous amount of cheese, the substantial weight of the pizza, and that perfectly crisp crust. It's rich, hearty, and exactly the kind of pizza you hope for when you're craving something substantial. The service was fantastic on both visits as well. My servers were friendly and attentive, and I also really enjoyed the old-school interior. It has that wonderfully dated, nostalgic feel that immediately brought me back to the good old days of going out to restaurants around Detroit as a kid. To me, that atmosphere is part of the charm. If you haven't tried Loui's Pizza yet, trust me -- you're missing out. After hearing about it for years, I can definitely see why it has such a loyal following, and I'll absolutely be back.

We called ahead and reserved a space for 17 people and they were very accommodating. The pizza here is FANTASTIC. The cheese pull was something to behold. The Greek salad and antipasto salad was excellent and a HUGE recommendation and endorsement on the garlic cheese bread. First time visiting Michigan and my friend who is local wanted to try this place. I'm not a huge…read morepizza fan to begin with but photos looked promising. The building is super cute, staff were really friendly. Unfortunately, can't say that I'm impressed by the pizza. My friend and I both ordered the Hot Honey Ricotta-Roni, one as is and the other no meat. We both felt the pizza lacked sauce and flavor. There was more bread to eat through than toppings and that was disappointing. For the pizza where no meat was requested and they said they couldn't do a substitution, you would've thought they'd add extra cheese or whatever other sauce they put on the pizza. I did request this over the phone but the background was extremely loud, so it may have been missed. Overall, the next time I visit Michigan, I'd be interested in trying another of their vegetarian pizzas to give it a shot. Thanks to the staff for being so friendly.

My wife first took me there in 1985. We had to go up to Detroit for a funeral. She grew up in Roseville so we always went to the one on 10 mile and Gratiot. This location was close to my hotel so I went by figured I'd grab a sub on the way to the airport. I had never been to this location before but they said they made steak sandwiches so I said give me a large one with everything on it which to me includes lettuce, tomato and banana peppers. The lady working behind the counter took outstanding care of me. She said it would take 10 minutes. I told her no problem you can't rush genius. We both laughed. She packaged this thing up nicely and I was out of there probably in less than 10 minutes. To say she took good care of me, felt like I was one of her kids cause that was the way my mom took care of me when I was little. I had to run a couple of other errands and finally got a chance to bite into it about 30 minutes later. Outstanding doesn't say enough. Definitely will hit this location again. Pro tip, if you're in the area, Saint Clair Shores has a great bakery, Bomarito's. If you need something sweet after the sub, they're a great place to go.

Tonight we ordered the large pizza with slab of ribs, fries, and coleslaw. We were informed that…read morethey were cooking more ribs but it would be two hours until they were finished (which would have been around 9pm) or they could give us 3/4 slab they had ready and reduce the price by $5. We decided to do that so we could eat dinner before 9pm, figuring they must sell a lot of ribs so they must be good. On the pizza, we ordered pepperoni/green pepper. After getting the order home, we discovered that the ribs looked more like just over 1/2 slab (8 bones starting at the small end of the slab) and were dry with lots of fat. Definitely needed more sauce because once you got past the initial thin coating, it was dry pork and endless chewing to try to process the dry meat. We all agreed we wouldn't order these again. Fries were OK, coleslaw was inedible, it had either gone bad or they added too much vinegar, either way no one ate more than a first bite and it got thrown away. We had ordered a pepperoni/green pepper pizza but received a ham and bacon one instead. We ate it anyway, although this combo isn't our thing, it was ok but the slices were cut so there were skinny slices mixed with larger ones. It would have been more helpful in dividing things out of they would have at least been more uniform. Some may ask why we didn't call back up there and correct the situation, but at this point we had just spent over $30 and the time it took to go up there, we decided to deal with what we had since the family was hungry. The place was empty when we picked up so not sure what was going on tonight. Two stars - one for the pizza and one to recognize them for trying to give us a deal for the ribs they had available at the time of our order. It's a bummer that this meal wasn't more of a hit.

I will preface this by saying I didn't order a pizza. That being said I ordered the grilled cheese…read morewhich touted mozzarella, pesto, baby spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes on sourdough. I opted for the garlic fries upcharge, bringing my total to $19.00. Somehow I justified it because I like these toppings and these toppings weirdly weren't available on a pizza. Or at least I didn't see it via the phone based ordering system. Yes, that's right, this is all of the future check with wrist bands and pour your own beer situation. Don't look for a paper menu, they ain't here. My sandwich wasn't a grilled cheese. It was basically pesto toast with large sun-dried tomatoes and scraps of mozzarella. Baby spinach was just missing. I did inquire to the host (perchance the only actual employee?) and he did talk to the kitchen and I guess they were out. With that information I turned to my friend Robert and said, "You know why we have servers? So they can let you know they're 86 spinach." I suppose I would have adjusted my order had I known this too. What's nuts is, they have ingredients to make a better grilled cheese. I mean, step one: add cheese. Why not mix the ricotta and pesto together and then add like havarti or something that may actually melt and have flavor. The sun-dried tomatoes should be sliced smaller. The garlic fries were fine, but also could have had more flavor. Robert's and neighboring table's pizza looked fine. Is it better than any other place offering Detroit style pizza? Hard to say. I guess I'm not in a hurry to go back. The kind host did make an adjustment to my bill for lack of spinach--but having a server would have prevented that being necessary.

I was heading home hungry when I passed Elephant & Co, a restaurant I had on my radar for months…read more It was way past lunch and well before dinner, so I was surprised by the steady stream of customers in this pizza/tap/game room, a difficult genre to define. Upon entering, the staffer explained the set-up to enjoy a variety of beers, poured and priced by the volume. Located at the back of the restaurant, customers can select beer flavors and serve themselves, no bartender needed. A tab is started and charged based on usage, tracked through the wristband provided to you. I ordered over mobile via a QR code, selecting pretzel sticks with beer cheese dip and a large, Detroit-style pizza. The soft pretzels were tender with a lovely crusty exterior. I inhaled the first pretzel since it was past lunchtime, savoring the salty, cheesy bites. I must admit, the pretzels' saltiness temporarily affected my taste buds because the pizza had little flavor, even with the pepperoni, sausage, and olives. I definitely did not taste the hot honey drizzle. I want to praise the light, airy crust. For a deep dish pizza, it did not sit heavy in my tummy. I also appreciated that the pizza was served on a rack, to allow air circulation and to prevent sogginess. The space was dark and had both large communal tables and smaller, intimate tables. This allowed for larger groups to enjoy community beyond a friend group. The other plus is the board games that are available to pass the time while enjoying various beers.
