A selection of tapas
Louisa K.

We wanted a light lunch and took advantage of the 3 Tapas for 5£ offer. You just go to the bar and pick the tidbits that look most tempting to you. I've lived in Granada, the home of tapas, and think I'm permitted to say that Pix are good at what they do and present some pretty decent and original tapas.

Very nice mix between bar and restaurant: enjoyed their selection of tapas, which are presented at the bar. There is no food menu, just pick whatever you prefer from the bar. They are making sure to bring in new tapas every ten minutes or so. Be sure not to take to much on the first serving. You'll regret it later, when new stuff is being brought out of the kitchen.

The decor is very smart, black and white art deco-inspired, which has really cheered up the site which always appeared rather dark in the past. When I think of tapas I expect a relaxed to boisterous experience, flamenco and jugs of Sangria. Sabroso caters for a more sophisticated clientele and should be very popular with the more conservative Holland Park set. Back to breakfast, though, which was great albeit not particularly Spanish. They offer a choice of pastries and cooked options. I have never been given the choice of half an English breakfast before and just couldn't resist I'm scared to imagine what size the full portion would have been as the half was very generous and good value at £4.95. A vegetarian alternative is also available (full size only), as well as the usual egg-based dishes. Sabroso offers a soothing alternative to the aforementioned cafes which are dominated by yummy mummies and their offspring at this time of day. The service was particularly friendly, and I will try and find an excuse to visit again soon.

I've never quite understood the politics and have decided to ignore the local gossip, as far as I'm concerned they are both just as good (or bad) as each other. They are also both about as local as you get around here, and busier than ever since their only true competition down the road fell victim to celebrity-fronted gentrification a while back. Most importantly, they have kept us in food and wine throughout this weird summer of 2020. Tavistock Square is not the prettiest but add some sunshine and you feel transported to an average Spanish village. Nothing about La Plaza is all that special, but the tapas are tasty enough. Service is a bit of a mixed bag, so possibly not your first choice if you are in a hurry.

Ignore the stir though and head to La Plaza on a hot day or warm evening to sit in the square for hours on end with a good meal or tapas selection and some Estrella Galicia or a good Rioja. These guys do the standard tapas favourites very well, very succulent chorizo al vino or spicy patatas bravas, for example, but the real gems are their full meals. The best meal here by far is the Galician-style cod (bacalao de gallego), which will get you several massive hunks of cod cooked in paprika with potatoes, peas and other assorted goodies. The paellas are also fantastic and proper sharing food for a romantic dinner or date! Don't be put off by the vast number of regulars/locals you will see dining and drinking here, this is the kind of place that people come to night after night after night and for good reason.

Sangria was a good but a bit sweet, so decided to switch it up to beers for round 2 which hit the spot! Service was a bit slow for what I'd expect from food in a mall, but we were tiered and not in a rush to get back on our feet. In fact, we were so tiered we didn't even bother to browse the menu, and ordered the set menu for 2 to share for £11.50 per person. It was a nice way to try a bunch of items and a good value and perfect for two to share. There is also a fancier set menu for £15.50 with a bit more meat options. Overall, I thought it was a fun way to end a day of shopping. Set menu included: Pan con aioli (bread and olive oil) Tortilla de patatas (traditional Spanish style egg omelet with potatoes) Paella de mariscos (seafood paella, very tasty!) Chorizo al horno (good 'ole chorizo. Yum) Albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce - I think the meat was lamb) Patatas bravas (crispy roasted potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce)

Los Molinos - Bread and olive oil. It would be nice if the oil was infused with herbs.

We did four tapas and a liter of sangria for dinner and left very satisfied. The sangria is delicious and I've only had better in Valencia, Spain. A lovely day with brunch in London and a show followed by what was meant to be a lovely Spanish tapas. Issues 1 - when we got there we had booked for 7pm but there were no tables free. The way they looked was as if they hadn't reserved our table. We were asked if we wanted to sit down in the basement bit which was ok but not much atmosphere. Not great when it was booked weeks ago and booked under birthday celebrations. Issue 2 - the service was very slow. We ordered half a bottle of wine and tap water. The wine took 10+ minutes and no water. We said we were ready for food so she said she'd be 1 minute. 10 minutes later she returned. We had to ask again for the tap water. In the middle of eating the waitress also put her handed over the pouring part of the jug to check if there was water left... why would you touch it? Issue 3 - the table behind us who ordered after us get received all their food first .. where was ours? 10 minutes later she tried to give them one of our dishes, then we finally got it. But that was it. Fed up of waiting for the rest we ate the one tapas and then I complained to the waitress that it was now nearly an hour and 15 minutes since we ordered and we had got one dish! Issue 4- 10 minutes after my complaint about the time she came over to tell us one of the 4 dishes we ordered wasn't available. This was an hour and 20 minutes after we ordered! Ridiculous! We ordered a different choice; to be told a few minutes later this was available either. What Spanish tapas restaurant doesn't have chorizo...? ‍10 minutes later the rest of our food arrived, one hot, one rarely luke warm. Issue 5- a Spanish tapas meal, with 3 dishes and wine took 2 hours!!!! 2 hours!! Issue 6- I wanted to speak to the manager about the service, being put downstairs, the time to get food. His response, well that dish is popular... why take an hour and 20 minutes to tell me it isn't available! The rest he brushed aside and didn't have time for us. We paid the full bill, we got nothing as an apology and even were given a bill with a service charge on which we asked to be taken off! To still no apology and a disgusted look. I will absolutely not come here again, nor will I recommend it to anyone else. Absolutely appalling service and not an ounce of accountability or apology!
