Needed a gas valve replaced. They did a great job and were $200 cheaper than my first estimate with another company.

Wow. I'm not sure I've found a hidden gem, because they seem pretty well known in the area. That…read morebeing said, boy am I happy I found them. I had been searching the interwebs trying to find an indoor firewood rack for our Southern Vermont cabin. I kept finding things on Amazon, Lowes, Home Depot and/or other websites, but I've grown tired of the cheap steel you get with those sites/stores. Sadly my generation really don't know what quality metal is because of these websites and stores. Craftmanship? Not so much. Enter a local business that churns out quality metal work. After a few conversations/emails with Evan, I stopped by the shop to finalize the plans. After putting my deposit down, Evan gave me a call letting me know my firewood rack and some bathroom towel racks and toilet paper holders, were ready. In addition I ended up ordering some fireplace tools based on the quality. Overall all great experience and I'm looking forward to taking one of their classes one of these days.

A few years ago, I visited Morrell Metalsmiths during an Open Studio tour, where my family and I…read morewere captivated by the blacksmithing demonstrations. Fast Forward a few years through a pandemic, and I needed a unique gift for my dad's birthday and remembered that Morrell Metalsmiths offered blacksmithing courses. I booked us spots in their 1-day "Taste of Blacksmithing" course. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that our instructor, Justin, was not only a skilled blacksmith but also an engaging and patient teacher. His passion for the craft was obvious, and he made sure everyone had a fun and informative experience. There were about 5-6 students and 1 instructor. We each shared a forge with another student but had our own anvils that were adjusted for our heights. Throughout the course, we each crafted a functional and well-designed fire poker (photo attached), which I have since put to good use. My only feedback to myself after using it a few times, is that I should have gone with a slightly shorter design but it's a good length for bonfires. I think that the end result was still impressive, considering it was my first attempt at blacksmithing and it is feels good to use a tool that you made. Despite the challenges we faced as beginners in the course, Justin was always there to provide guidance and encouragement as well as guide us through fixing our mistakes so we all went home with a functional piece. One thing to note is that communication with Justin may require some patience, as he can be quite busy. However, rest assured that he will respond to your messages. Additionally, due to the popularity of the classes and the small class sizes, you may need to book your spot a few months out. Also if its a cold day, dress in layers as it gets hot quickly when you are working. Overall, the "Taste of Blacksmithing" course at Morrell Metalsmiths was an unforgettable experience that left me eager to continue exploring the world of blacksmithing. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking for a unique, hands-on experience that you'll remember for a lifetime. Whether you're an aspiring blacksmith or simply seeking a fun and educational activity, Morrell Metalsmiths will not disappoint. PS Ask Justin to show you some pictures of an amazing staircase that he built which looks like it is made from tree branches growing out of the floor.

In late spring 2017 we asked Northeast Fabricators to give us a price estimate for some simple…read moresteel weldments and a few miscellaneous parts needed for a project we had planned for summer shutdown. We first contacted the owner of the business, Peter Kirchner, but the woman who answered the phone said Mr. Kirchner was away and said we could talk to a Jim LaFrance about what we wanted. Mr. LaFrance asked us to email our drawings to him and he said he would give us a quote within a few days. We did as he asked but we never heard anything from Mr. LaFrance again, even after we called and emailed him several times. We asked another shop for a quote and we received our quote the next day. We've since talked to many other project leaders at other businesses who had the same experience with Mr. LaFrance. They all said they were completely ignored by Mr. LaFrance even when he said he would get a price to them. They also had to choose other shops to quote their work. We can't believe Mr. Kirchner allows Mr. LaFrance to be so unprofessional and ruin chances for Northeast Fabricators to acquire new clients and show themselves to be responsive and reliable when asked to quote work. We spoke with a man who works with another business in the same building as Northeast Fabricators. He said that Mr. LaFrance has made a habit of ignoring many of their quote requests for a long time. Unfortunately, Mr. Kirchner either doesn't believe the truth or just doesn't care that Mr.LaFrance is lazy, incompetent and unreliable even when others complain about him. This kind of thing is very poor practice and seems to be destroying Northeast Fabricator's reputation. We'll never contact them again and will advise our colleagues to avoid them, too. We have given this business a one-star rating only because Yelp won't allow us to choose a zero-star rating.
