Gave Pitfire another try, and had a much better experience. Every staff member was friendly and seemed intent on giving us a good experience. The person who took our order noticed that my friend had a reusable water bottle and offered to fill it up. She was informative and let us know that water would be brought to our table. I ordered the Burrata pizza and a Strawberry Blonde ale (didn't catch the name of the brewery but it was delicious). My friend and I sat in a booth. The tables are generously wide, plenty of space for all kinds of pizzas and drinks. The food came out quickly; I didn't even notice a wait at all. The Burrata pizza is definitely worth a try; it feels healthy (yay arugula) but is definitely still tasty. So many of the pizzas on the menu looked great, so I'll have to come back and try some more. Had high expectations due to word of mouth of my friends. Got the "Just Say Cheese" pizza which boasted 4 cheeses. Got the pizza and there was hardly any cheese on it! This was 1 ugly pizza. Fortunately, it tasted better than it looked but not enough to recommend. I will go back and try something different next time. Also, the service was a little lacking. I'm not a huge fan of saucy overwhelming pizzas, so Pitfire was my go-to because I love their simple quality ingredients. Unfortunately, it's always a gamble when you get takeout or delivery here at this location. I've never had an issue here with a pizza dining in, but 4/5 times my takeout pizzas are burnt to death, and sparse with ingredients such as cheese (ESPECIALLY WITH CHEESE). The staff knows better than to send out these pizzas for dine-in customers, so why send them to go? Today was the final dealbreaker for me ("I can change him syndrome") when I decided to try one of their seasonal pizzas to go, the heirloom tomato. The tomatoes were flavorful, but of course the pizza itself was an oily, soggy, cheese-less mess. So I'm breaking up with you because at this point this relationship is toxic. I did Not order gluten-free crust for my pizza, and maybe it wasn't, but that's exactly what it tasted like. I ordered Zoe's pepperoni, the crust had a weird consistency & was an overall bland pizza. I've never had a wood-fired pizza I regretted eating before until now. Normally I love them. Perhaps the style of mostly just tomato sauce & not covered in cheese like most pizzas (even in Italia) created the higher emphasis on just the taste of the crust? After having a meal here, I understand why it currently has a 4-star rating and not a 5-star rating. The photos of the pizza look great, and the expectations of a special artisan taste experience are high, but when you eat it, it falls short of how good it looks. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but it doesn't wow you and is definitely not memorable. We had the wild mushroom pizza and the honey pizza, and both of them were underwhelming. The chicken meatballs are also "just OK". However, I have to say the chicken mushroom pasta was pretty darn good - we really enjoyed that dish and found it to be the best of the items we tried. So anyway, I'm comfortably giving Pitfire a 4-star rating - I wish they could earn a 5-star from me, but they'll need to make that pizza taste as good as it looks to earn that rating. read more

I am going to begin with the customer service aspect since it is the main reason prompting me to write my review. The Manager, Ian at the Costa Mesa location is hands down one of the best restaurant managers my family and I have had the pleasure of coming across. He not only goes out of his way visit our table and talk to my kids each time we visit, he makes our dining experience that much more enjoyable each and every time. (so much, that we miss his friendly face when he isn't working). This restaurant became part of our rotation early on, the delicious food, nice beer selection, relaxed atmosphere, friendly and accommodating staff allowed go out to dinner with little ones and actually enjoy it. They even kick the kids down some clay to play with which may sound small, but those with little ones always appreciate. We have twins.. so clay.. can.. save the day. Now for the menu: The choices that the seasonal menu / regular menu offers satisfies our sometimes different preferences. The kids: always want pizza and pasta, so that is easy. But the salad, pasta, pizza, app and beer selection is big enough, that even if pizza isn't what you're feelin', there are other fun options. We try it all and it never fails, it is always excellent. We dig this place. We are happy to have them in our Costa Mesa neighborhood. read more

Honestly aside from the $10 single beer I mistakenly added on to my to go order, this place is a hidden gem. The Honey Bear pizza with pepperoni instead of sausage is my go to, I can eat the entire thing in one sitting, my dog insists on having a bite or two as well. The Brussels Sprouts salad is also amazing. I have never ordered something here that I didn't enjoy. The cost of a single beer is a little ridiculous. You can buy a whole 6 pack for that. Wedding Rehearsal dinner for 50! Not a huge space, but very workable. Cody was so helpful in the planning of food and beer choices, and allowed us to come in early to set up our decor, and put a personal touch on the room. Everyone loved the food, so. much. food! Appetizers of cheesy bread, charcuterie and beet salad, then the food kept coming...spaghetti, mac and cheese, more salads and many great pizza's. Friendly staff, and then after party at the bar in back, now that's a cool spot. All our guests left well fed and really enjoyed the night. Great pizza, beer, and good tasting water paired with consistently friendly and helpful service (after visiting three times now). I'm pretty sure that everyone working tonight asked me if I was doing ok and/or needed another beer or bottle of water. The pizza was carefully prepared and cooked. The only thing I would suggest is that they either cut the pizza at the table or bring a cutter with the utensils to keep the crust from drying out before it gets to the table. I didn't have a good experience with a large $73 delivery order. I ordered a margarita pizza w/cauliflower crust & it was terrible! It was soggy & crust tasted like cardboard. Not everyone can do a good cauliflower crust. I warmed it up in the oven but couldn't save it. The chopped salad was bad too, bad quality lettuce & I didn't like the dressing. Salad didn't last one day as leftovers, even in the frig in Tupperware. I didn't like the white bean soup but the meatballs were good. I don't recommend. read more

AMAZING PIZZA! Been looking for a neapolitan style pizza place in the area and I am glad my boyfriend took me here. I tried the Honey Bear pizza and was so satisfied. I am currently obsessed with the meat + hot honey combo (they used sausage + honey + calabrian chile). It goes so well together! If you haven't tried it, I would highly recommend. The only comment I had about the pizza was that it went cold quickly- I think they transferred the pizza to a metal plate after taking it out of the oven which didn't keep the pizza hot/insulated through our entire dining experience. I honestly don't see how they are still in business. Quite possibly the worst service I have ever experienced. The first visit we made our order at the front counter, sat down and then waited 20 for our drinks, after I approached the obviously stoned out of his mind server asking if they were coming. The food took another 20 minutes. This was a Saturday lunch with only 2 other tables occupied. What do they do if it gets busy. Maybe the plan is horrible service so they don't get too many customers? Anyhow, food was ok, but a bit high priced for what you get. The beer is equally over priced. As I was drinking my beer, I thought it had an odd taste, never had that particular beer so maybe it's the beer. No, it wasn't. Once the beer was 3/4 gone I see large chunks on the bottom of the glass. Mold from beer lines that probably have not been cleaned since they opened. I'm guessing Stonerman was supposed to clean them, but then got high instead. Tonight was the second and last try. Reserved the back room for a soccer party. They even charge a $50 deposit for the table, so we figured it was set. Called back the next day and another bad server said it was all set. So we have 2 inept servers. Showed up for the party to find out the first guy messed things up so bad, he couldn't charge the card because he took the number down wrong and couldn't call us back because he took the phone down wrong. They did manage to correctly take the reservation and payment for the other group that called a day later. The other party had about 3 people already there when we arrived but they wouldn't move them. It was like pulling nails to put in another drink order. You guys want more money, right? To the owners, I'm sure your losing money hand over foot. Stop digging deeper and just give up. Your heart is obviously not in it. Let someone that can run a restaurant have that prime location. I've been to the restaurant many times and it was a lovely place to get food. Unfortunately the manager changed and since then I haven't received the same customer service. I was ignored by by an employe and gave me attitude when he finally acknowledged me. Then he got the manager and then the manager sided with the employee even though the employee was in the wrong. I am not even the type to say that "the customers always right" because I understand that some people can be rude and I would not want my employees to be treated like that but in this situation I did nothing to deserve the lash back that I received. I really cannot believe how downhill this restaurant has gone since the previous manager left, so unfortunate that I won't be coming back here and I wish that someone from upper management can do something about this. read more

How shall I begin? I always try to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt when making minor mishaps, however today just seemed like a slew of constant mistakes by the wait staff. Although the food was - if you will, alright. The service was awful. It's your typical Saturday afternoon, not too busy. Two chefs on shift, two servers, an assistant manager and what seems to be the GM. Yet, our pizza was forgot to be made, and then TWICE came out incorrect. Not to mention the measly side salad I ordered came out wrong as well. The girl at the front, who was dressed like she rolled in from the night before, was so distracted when taking our order, so it wasn't surprising for multiple items being wrong or missing. What really did it for us was the fact that not one time did a manager come up to the table and say "I'm so sorry for all of the mistakes and the fact that you've now waited an extra 30 minutes, can we do anything?" Sadly to say, probably won't be coming back to this location. By far the worst I've been to out of the few that are out there. Here's to hoping that the GM that's sitting directly across from us on their laptop sees this and learns to address issues when they occur. But after seeing the service after today - that's highly unlikely. read more

This is our first time here. I'll start from the beginning, the young man who took our order (Cade) was extremely nice. Give that guy a raise, first impressions are everything . We started by splitting a Caesar salad, yummy. Now the pizza, they only come in one size, so two splitting the salad and a pizza is just right. Reasons for 2 stars are the following is their unacceptable service starting with the cashier who was a young lady that seemed upset to see us walking in to the establishment and going all the way to the cook who gave us a bad attitude because the cashier made a mistake on the order. **UPDATE** - I always order take away and its always the same exact item. Thus, I'm always charged the same amount every time - $11.64. This weekend, I was reconciling my credit card statement and noticed I had been charged $16.64. I immediately KNEW someone added a $5 tip. I called the restaurant and asked to speak to the Manager. (Don't recall his name now) I explained what happened. He looked up the transaction and said "Hmmmm. Says here that there is a $5 tip. I said "Yeah. I would look into who did that because it DEFINITELY wasnt me." Instead of apologizing profusely for the fraudulent behavior, he just said plainly "What I can do is refund you the $5." YES.
