Great surf shop here. Brodie helped us. He was a really cool dude! I noticed that Yelp had given them a Yelp Award on the wall behind the cash register. They did not have much in Ernie's size. We were a little disappointed about that. Most surfers are of a younger and smaller stature, so, they don't get too much full size sweat jackets and shirts, which is understandable. They had a wonderful selection of clothing, jackets, a kids section of stuff, sunglasses and hats. I see they also rents surfboards as well. That's what it's all about, right? This is our 2nd year vacationing in St. Augustine. Last year we rented surf boards from the Pit Surf Shop and thought we'd be able to wing it on our own. Boy did we underestimate how difficult surfing is! We decided the next time we were in the area, we were going to book a surf lesson. Scheduling was easy, we did it over the phone but I believe you can also book online as well. We had a group 4 that included 2 ladies and 2 girls (age 11). For groups of 4, the cost was $60 per person and included two instructors. We had EXTREMELY windy weather conditions and the instructors did their best to ensure we still had a good time and stayed safe. Our instructors were Shelby and Nevin. It was very hard to carry the boards with all the wind and both Shelby and Nevin helped us gals out. This was much appreciated! Shelby went above and beyond to look for good waves and not push us to take just any wave. While we definitely didn't "hang ten", everyone enjoyed themselves and we made some fun memories. Having such strong winds did make it hard for the instructors but they were troopers! read more

I didn't blow out my flip flip, but I could not cruise on back home because I made a amateur mistake and left them in San Diego when I visited Margaritaville (Saint Augustine Beach) I've had leather Rainbow Slippahs (Hawaiian word) for 30 years. Will at the shop pointed out a pair of Hemp Rainbows that until recently weren't even legal. I figured an extra pair of Zories (Japanese word) never hurt. So I bought the Flip Flops (Florida word) and I love them. They have a different feel on the bottom of my feet, not slippery even when wet, kind of like burlap. The softer burlap strap didn't even give the usual blister. We'll see how they hold up at home in San Diego when they get wet, dry, get wet, dry, etc. etc. But for now thanks Will for the rec., I love my new beach shoes (NY word). read more

So friendly, knowledgeable and helpful! There are quite a few surf shops to pick from in St. Augustine, but this should be your first stop!

Visiting from California my boys wanted to surf and boogie board on the east coast. Staff was super friendly and efficient. Best of all they offer a wide variety of surf boards all for the same cost of $15 for 4 hours; boogie board was $10 for same amount of time. (Another store only offered 7 and 8 foot foam boards for $15 for 2 hours). My son chose a 7 ft hard board as waves were only 1 to 2 feet and he had a great time at the beach down the street. The beach had a lifeguard on duty after 10:30 the day we were there. There is a free public parking lot next to the shop that has bathrooms ( we didn't use so not sure about them) and an outdoor shower we use that was great. read more

Great surf shop. Since leaving SD I haven't really found a board shop that had a decent selection of boards and good prices. The people running the place were also really nice. The shop itself is pretty cool. Stuffed into an old house, the main area is filled with clothes, suits etc. Then there is a 2-story smaller house-thing with longboards upstairs and shortboards downstairs right out back. read more

Have had mostly good experiences with The Pit, my nephews have attended surf camp there the past several years. However, last year, one of the instructors had an extremely short temper and yelled at my seven-year-old nephew, calling him the r-word in front of the rest of the camp. We came here for surf lessons and had the BEST time! The waves were small when we went but it was still an amazing lesson. My wife and I both were still able to stand up and ride in lots of waves. Couldn't have gone any better! There's no direct parking at the surf shop unless you're parking 30mins or less so if you're going for lessons and are staying close by your best bet is to walk! Parking gets crazy down there early. We will definitely be back for some more lessons! read more

I walked in at 7:45 pm after the beach to get a new pair of sunglasses, and as I walked in the door some rude man came up to me and said "we are closing in 2 minutes" obviously this store does not care for its customers. I understand it's close to closing hours but i knew exactly what I wanted and was going to be quick. Was glad to see that they close at 8pm on saturdays and me being 15mins before closing was such a burden. The staff here is unbelievably friendly and knowledgeable. They took my NY boys in like family. They are 11 years old and did surf camp. The instructors were amazing. Great time at the Pit! We had scheduled a lesson for our 12 year old son at another local business but unfortunately the instructor had a conflict come up. We scheduled a lesson at the Pit after visiting their shop. The team there was very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about both surfing and skating. After making our appointment we met up with Will, our instructor. He was great and very accommodating to our son being as it was his first surf lesson. He took his time to cover the basics with our son and then they hit the waves. It took our son a few times to get used to the water but eventually Will had him standing on the board and riding the waves. The kid is hooked now!! Thanks again Will and The Pit! read more

Their customer service is awful. They don't allow returns. When we purchased a men's hoodie they did not inform us of their no return policy. We went back the next day with a receipt and a young female employee who was helping us had a major attitude when we tried to return it. After convincing her to at least give us a store credit she proceeded to explain to us that we would not get the full purchase price on our store credit. She asked us if that made sense and we told her it did not. After rolling her eyes she rudely responded with, " yes it does." Unfortunately we have to go back one more time to use our gift certificate credit, but after that we will no longer be patronizing the pit surf shop. read more

Mostly younger kids working there, but all very cool, and all of them have good customer service skills.i had to do a return on a watch the other day that I had bought 2 months ago for a mother's day present. Although the policy is 30 days with a receipt, the manager allowed me to do the return. Nice not to have to jump through hoops to do business with people. Also the young blond hair girl( I think her name was Mallory) was a pleasure to deal with. She made it seem like she had all the time in the world to answer questions, and show me things. I recently moved to town and have always wanted to try surfing. The first time around, I made the mistake of renting a board, and giving it a go on my own. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to figure out the basics of surfing and how to defend against the waves without knowing any of the tricks of the trade. The next time, after my friends suggested, I decided to take a lesson at the Pit Surf Shop. My instructor was Roy, and he was super cool from the start. He explained to me surfing etiquette, safety and the basics of popping up and standing on the board before we even got in the water. He was very patient and an excellent teacher. Each wave I caught, he gave me simple instructions on how to improve. I was close to getting up the whole time, but when it was time to walk back to the place we had drifted from, I still hadn't ridden a wave without falling. When we got back to the place we started, Roy asked me if I wanted to try a few more waves as we had a few minutes left in the 2-hour lesson. I of course agreed, and on the very last wave, I got up and rode the wave the whole way. It was an awesome experience and a great workout! For new surfers, a lesson is the way to go, and Roy at the Pit is a great instructor. read more

Good products but horrible customer service. I have been a loyal customer for over 3 years despite their higher-than-average prices, but today--less a week after purchasing some of their Waterman's sunscreen, I was applying it for the first time and realized that the it was expired. If you are unaware, sunscreen is quite literally useless after its expiration date, so as any knowledgeable person would, I brought the receipt to the store to possibly exchange it. I was informed by a store associate, Casey, that since I had used it prior to bringing it in, I could not return it for another. The negligence does not fully rest upon his shoulders, but be aware that they are selling products with no assurance that it will work or be useful after you walk out of the store with it--which, if you ask me, is proof of their lack of caring whatsoever, and I am sad to say that I will never be doing business with them again. You have been warned. read more
