Fortunately for us, all we wanted was a quiet therapuetic beach getaway so that we could get our tan on. We got half the deal, but sadly it rained for a good part of our get away. So what to do when it rains? Call Down to Earth and make an appointment to spend some time with Heather. If you get a her voice-mail, she is quick to respond. Make an appointment even if it's not raining! You can build in an hour of your time to do something very worthwhile! Her pottery studio is right by Break Awayz (read my review and go there too!) It's small and parking is across the street on the beach side. I already liked her studio when I walked in and heard country tunes playing on her Bluetooth. She was very patient with my 3 girls and was attentive when each one needed help with a particular skill. Even my 4 year old was able to independently navigate the potter's wheel after Heather guided her and gave her thorough instructions. (The step by step instructions are also listed on a board if you forget. ) The girls half way finished bowls looked worthy enough of Pottery Barn dishware. They have yet to glaze them, but I know they'll turn out beautiful. Not only do we get to walk away with lovely art work, but my girls enjoyed a rainy afternoon together as well. Trust me. Spending a little time here and then heading over next door for a hearty oatmeal stout and poke nachos, will be just as therapeutic as your time laying on the beach.

The furniture is fabulous! They have a great selection of paints, stencils, handles, knobs and pulls and more for furniture makeovers. They also have plenty of art throughout the shop. Resin art and mixed media were plentiful and they teach classes on various mediums. My friend wants lessons on resin art. I picked up a whimsical pull for a piece of furniture at home- the knob had broken off a few months ago, so I was so happy to replace it with something fun and my style. Tiff grabbed a couple of Christmas gifts and a schedule for classes. On the furniture side, I was very interested in a couple of pieces, but there weren't price tags and I wondered if they were more for those doing classes or if they were sold outright. You're always greeted with a smile and assured everything will be taken care of. The problem? They don't follow through! My youngest son has always been an A student. Not to suggest he's perfect. He isn't. His A's have been hard won, and it's required a balance of teaching, parenting and great communication, which we've always had with his teachers. When he would start to slack off or not hand in homework, I made sure teachers knew that I was there, ready to respond. We recently received an email from his Math Teacher saying he was missing 9 assignments. (FIRST QUESTION: Why did it take getting to 9 before anyone contacted me?) I immediately contact the teacher by email requesting a list of the missing assignments and a meeting. To date, I haven't heard back. A little back story: My son started the year at a different school and was on the waiting list at Imagine. I guess they expected him to know their rules even though he wasn't there for orientation. As it turns out, the math teacher sends home a list of the weeks assignments every Monday for parents to sign, which was the reason we were supposed to know our boy was missing homework. The problem is that we didn't know she did this, and had NEVER sign one. You'd think that would be enough of a reason to email us and let us know something was wrong. My wife and I called to talk with the school about the situation and finally got a response from Kristy, the school's Assistant Principal. She explained that Imagine has a 24 hour contact policy, and that we should have received a call or email within 24 hours. Very sorry about the entire mess, she promised to look into the issue, have a meeting with everyone in the department and get back to us with the specifics of on my son's issue(s). That was well over a week ago and I haven't heard back from her either. My son recently came home with his progress reports, which contained several C's, two F's and a D. We signed and returned the progress reports with a request for a meeting with the teachers in each class. We still haven't heard from a single one. If you're looking for a great school that will educate your kids and communicate with you, this place isn't it. "Charter School" may sound nice, but going from an A student to a D student in just a few months and being ignored through it all... Enough is enough. We have many friends that teach in the Flagler County School system and when we told them we were moving our son to Imagine, every single one of them told us to be very careful. Some even described this exact situation. I should have listened. I didn't, and now my son is paying for it. I'm moving him back to Bunnell Elementary this morning. ----------------------------------- UPDATE: After enrolling my son at his new school, I returned to Imagine to let them know and make sure my son didn't owe them anything. I ended up meeting with Kristi Kendall and having a good talk. While there were attempts made to contact us, she agrees that we should have been called and that there is definitely a problem, even if only this time. There's a lot to this issue, and my review of one start still stands, but I couldn't walk away without doing everything I could to make them fully aware of the situation. No child or parent should have experiences like this. Particularly when they're so involved. I wish them luck and hope they fix this, and quick!

They seem knowledgeable and sensitive to our kids needs. I've had good experiences with the administrative staff as well. When we needed to rearrange our pick up schedule, the principle and vice principle were extremely cooperative. You probably will not find another school in Utah where all teachers are graduated and took TESOL classes. I took their TOEFL classes and I was able to get an amazing score in the exam AND be accepted into university (BYU). All of their classes are very useful and will help you be prepared to become a college student. I studied in another language school and I didn't have a good experience because the teachers were not as prepared as the ones who work at Selnate. Don't choose a school just because it's cheaper! If you take your education seriously, choose Selnate! They won't disappoint you!

I mean, you've got Embry-Riddle, but not everyone's cut out to be a pilot you know? Luckily, locals who are in need of education have DBCC, and for a community college, it's pretty nice! Small Classes: Most classes here only have 25-30 people, and many people like that sort of individual attention. Personally, I am a big fan of huge lectures, but of course that's more of a university thing than a community college thing. Right to work: Most people who graduate from DBCC have little to no problem finding work. Two friends of mine graduated from here and were able to secure jobs fairly easily. So if you're looking for oppurtunities beyond community college, it seems DBCC is a great place. Nice Campus: The Daytona campus is very convenient and is right off International. It's a bit small, but very nice overall. The Bad: N/A The Daytona campus of DBCC is a very nice place, and I have spent some considerable time there and I find it to be quite agreeable. So if you need some neighborhood education, you can;t do much better than DBCC Overall 9.5/10= DBCC Do Bother Coming to Class

So, when my friend came to visit us we figured what better than surfing lessons? My husband met Ryan Ragan of Vast Oceans when Ryan was teaching another class. Ryan was patient, thorough and prepared. Our experience was that Ryan was not only prepared for our children with right size boards, but had a tent up for the parents to relax in the shade on a very hot day. (Chair not included. So bring one!). Ryan went over board safety, how to fall properly so as to not get hurt, when to exit the board so as to not get hurt, proper board care, style and grace, how to get out into the surf, the steps of getting up on the board. He helps the kids get confidence and comfort. He does not push them to go beyond comfort zone but continuously reminds them what steps they will be doing. He is patient and kind. Definitely wants kids to have the joy of surfing and solid instruction. What to bring: long sleeved sun shirt (aka rash guard) sunscreen for legs and all other exposed areas, towel, chair (if you want to sit) your cell phone or camera for some great photo opportunity's if you are watching. Bring a snack and drink. You will have a break and it's a great time to get hydrated and apply sunscreen on legs again. Don't forget to tip!

I was hoping I could get in that afternoon because I was going to be busy with work the rest of the week. Ryan got back with me before I landed and was happy to say he'd fit me in a couple hours after I landed. He said he's been at it all day, but wanted to fit me in (we ended up going to 6.30 or so). I had read around at some lesson reviews in the area, and I saw numerous ones that gave me the idea that I probably wouldn't even be standing up on the board that day -- but hey, I was gonna get in what I could. To my amazement, Ryan had me up on a board and riding within the hour. I was ecstatic since I wasn't even expecting to get up on the board at all. At the end of the set, he was sure to push me to get a good one in so I could end it on a smile instead of a fall. Killer lesson, had a blast and I'm hooked now. Really wish I could've made it back for more that week. Anyway -- super personable and nice guy. Thanks Ryan! I'll definitely swing in again the next time I'm through there.
