Had a great experience. After buying a used epoxy board from someone on marketplace, I took it to Surf Station for a professional opinion. The board had several spots where the coating was flaking, that I was hoping it was cosmetic, but wasn't sure. I normally surf shaped ploy/glass boards. A staff member, Curren, was there and very helpful. He confirmed it looked like cosmetic issues only. He gave me advice to lookout for any water damage after surfing and blessed my path forward. Saw a Google ad for a surfboard that specified free shipping. I bought it to see $675 in shipping in the checkout screen. I called and emailed them the ad they had running in Google and they basically said "oopsy". That certainly isn't how I run my business. Not a company I would do a big purchase with. read more

Trying to get help with surfboards was like pulling teeth. I'm looking for 2 boards, the help I did manage to find told me he'd get someone, couldn't find any one then seemed bothered to help me, wasn't forthcoming with much info at all. Felt like I was a bother to the sales person so I left irritated, went to another shop where I was actually helped and spent a bundle. read more

The moment we walked in I said to my husband (who was there to look at wet suits), "Wow, this looks like the surf shops on The North Shore in Oahu. (We were fortunate enough to live in Hawaii for 2 years about 6 years ago.) They had a good selection of surfboards, board shorts, and other water-sport gear. They even had gear for skateboarding and a good selection of beach/surf related clothing as well as coolers, sunglasses etc. The Surf Station reeks authentic beach shop. My issue was was with the personnel. Most of the staff were not wearing masks, and they did not require patrons to do so either. No one even asked us if we needed help or if we were looking for something particular. I understand leaving customers alone to browse, but we were not even acknowledged, and the shop was not even too busy as it was mid afternoon on a Wednesday. We looked through the wetsuits and we were unable to find what we were looking for, unfortunately. They only had O'Neil and their own Surf Station brand. Pros - Great authentic surf shop feel Lots of boards and accessories Nice selection of beach/sun related clothing and sunglasses Good selection of tumblers, coolers etc. Cons- Not COVID friendly (only a few employees wore masks) No acknowledgment by staff; no one even offered help and it wasn't super busy Only 2 brands of wetsuits during this visit We'll check it out again; perhaps there wetsuit stock was low. I think it would be a great place to find gifts for the water-sport lovers in your life. The fact that masks were not required and we were not even acknowledged accounted for the 3 star rating. read more

I've waited a few weeks to do this review, because I was very angry & didn't want to make an emotional review. On June 3, 2023, some friends & I (adult women) were heading to the beach when I realized I left my suit at the house. We stopped here & bought an incredibly overpriced bathing suit & 2 of my friends bought souvenir shirts. There were 3 young people working - a girl, older boy, & young boy. I was checked out by the girl & my friends were both checked out by the older boy. None of them gave us a bag for our purchased items when we checked out. No big deal, right? We're all trying to cut back on plastic. As we were getting in our car, the young boy & the girl came running out asking if we paid... I've never been accused of stealing in my entire life. I was immediately disgusted, but ok, people make mistakes. We showed our receipts & they went away. THEN as we were in line to pull out of the parking lot, the older boy came running out & flagged us down again. I backed up & again we were asked to show our receipts. At this point, I was pretty much fuming so I went back in & returned the bathing suit. I decided I'd rather go to the beach without a suit than give these people my money. Never ever will I go back & I certainly don't recommend it. Note to the owner: 1) You have unprofessional children running your store. You should hire some supervision. 2) This wasn't a busy store & these kids had JUST checked us out. How is it possible that they forgot they checked us out that quickly? 3) If you are concerned about people walking out of the store with items in their hand without bags, GIVE THEM BAGS! read more

There was a slight mix up- google maps couldn't find the 2nd location so my nephew & I were a little late for our lesson but we had a good time. The water was really rough for our first surf lesson but Blane is a really strong swimmer. Grabbing my board & take us out over & over. His stamina seemed endless. After our lesson we went back to the first location where someone (I didn't get their name but he said he was new but had been skateboarding for years) helped me pick out my first skate board! He was extremely knowledgeable & welcoming. read more

A small strip of surf shops right by the entrance of Anastasia State Park selling some of the trendiest surf gear in the area. The store located on the top called Linen & Waves has the most beautiful clothes priced moderately. The sale rack wasn't your usual neon and unattractive printed tees either. The best part of the store for me was actually their sale rack as they had wonderfully selected dresses and blouses with a top notch feel at 40% off the marked price. You can't beat that. I bought a beautiful blouse with a printed Birds of Paradise pattern on it that can easily double as a bathing suit cover up during the warmer months. The outdoor section has a few retailers selling different goods. The inventory here rocks and is definitely worth checking out. read more

My granddaughter and myself had an incredible lesson with Stephen. Stephen was very thorough and explained step by step what we would be doing. He had us do a warm up before surfing. We had a blast. I would highly recommend Stephen. My granddaughter says that he was the best teacher and was very helpful she highly recommends him. I stopped by once again while en route form St Augustine down to Crescent Beach and Surf Station is as awesome as ever. Great selection of surfwear, tees, boardshorts, and decent selection of skateboards but the real deal is their expansive selection of Channel Islands surfboards--supposedly the largest on the east coast and I'd believe it. Andrew F's comment (see his review) on the staff being disinterested never has reflected my own experience and I've been here many, many times. The kids who work here are surfers, chill, and low-key. They won't come and follow you around and try to show you stuff, but if you need help tell one of them and they'll certainly be helpful. I needed a shirt brought down from its perch on a display far far up in the air (I'm 6'2" and couldn't reach it so . . .) and I told a girl working here and she very gladly got a pole to fetch it down with for me. No problem there. They still have their two cats roaming around the place and they sponsor events like surf film premires--the one they had last year for Innersection was an awesome event--and the love the local core surf community has for Surf Station is very obvious. Purchased a bodyboard online through Surf Station. Fairly priced and neatly packed, board took 3 - 4 days to arrive via FEDEX. The store has a wide array of bodyboards for beginners to advance riders. Swim fins and associated accessories are available too. There's a "chat" capability on the website, that allows customers to correspond with staff online, during regular business hours which was helpful. Will return and purchase more items as needed. read more

Man, this place was neat! And perfect for what was needed. I was visiting Florida for a few days and wanted to get in the water really bad, so I could know what west coast waves are like and say I understand what East coast waves are like. I didn't pack any swimming trunks with me, and I didn't want to borrow any family members because most of those had nets on the inside, and those are uncomfortable for me now. So only Surf Shorts or Board shorts do me well now. Walking into this place, I didn't know what to expect, but they had PLENTY of board shorts for me to choose from, so I got some really cool ones to wear and was able to get in the water 15 min later. While visiting the St Augustine area, we took our 5 kids (ages 12-22) to Surf Station, where they had a surf lesson with Blane. The kids had a great time and Blane coached all 5 of them to be able to get up on their boards and ride some waves. They all had a great time and honestly it was the highlight of a great trip to the area. Surf Station provided the boards and Blane was a great hands on instructor. read more

If you need sandals this is a great place to find the best. They have a big selection at prices much lower than you will find online. If you love the beach stop in this place. Clean store. All the employees are friendly and very helpful. If I was 35 years younger I'd spend a ton of money here. read more

I have purchased 2 surfboards from these guys. Unfortunately, the 2nd one was damaged in transit. The shipping manager, Jared, was very quick to respond (late night on a sunday), found me a new board and had a tracking number sent to me within a day. Updating this review. I got a message from Surf Station with an apology which I think was a nice gesture. Everyone can have a bad day and I would imagine this was a one off. Unfortunately I was affected directly. But I'm sure they offer a great experience for most customers. Tried to buy a surfboard online, bad experience. I found a board I liked at Surf Station online. It was a used board so I had a few questions. I called and they sent me in circles to call other numbers. Austin was nice. Pat I believe was the other guy I talked to seemed always in a rush. I didn't get my answers over the phone. I tried the chat feature in their site. Got some answers but not all. Tried emailing them several times. No answer. Finally after more than 10 days of chasing these guys Pat gets back to me. I send him the info to compete the purchase. Pat sends me an email: sorry but the board sold yesterday. 1 star for poor customer service. read more

One of the best collections of boards for sale I've seen. They have so many surfboards to choose from here and so much variety! It's not just a big pile of white short boards like most FL shops, they have all kinds and sizes. I loved seeing all the beautiful, fancy longboards - Bing, Takayama, etc. The people working there were laid back, but friendly and helpful. I'd happily make the drive to shop here for my next board. read more

I grew up in Hawaii and love to surf. I now live in Washington state and have to plan my warm water surfing adventures. This year, I am heading off to FIJI with friends for a epic surf adventure. I was in the market for a board that is in between a fun board and a short board. I wanted something loose, that could handle pretty hollow waves, but with paddle punch too. I combed the web obsessively for weeks researching what board would fit the bill. I visited more websites than I care to admit, sent a lot of e-mails (that were never returned) called a number of well known board manufactures and I just was not very satisfied. Then I came across the "Surf Station" website at surfstationstore.com. First thing that struck me is they have a huge selection of boards. Everything from Stewart to Chilli and tons more. As I clicked on boards, Austin from Surf Station fired up a live chat session with me and asked if he could help me. I explained my surf style, my upcoming trip, and what I was looking for. Austin validated what boards I should explore and was extremely helpful. We narrowed down the list of boards and I ended up purchasing a 7'4" Channel Island M13 which fits exactly what I was looking for. I rarely write reviews like this, but I was so impressed with Surf Station I felt compelled to spread the word. I will be back to order more surf gear from them for sure. They rock! I went surfing for my 28th birthday and It was more then I had ever imagined! St. Augustine is beautiful, warm, and delightful! The true hero of this morning session was my instructor Blane! Young spirited and kind, but had ages of knowledge and guidance! I was able to conquer almost every wave and ride it to the inviting shores! His help has given me more then enough confidence and tips to take to the waves when I return in the summer! A large thank you to this amazing shop as well, the cost was very worth it and they were very kind and inviting! Brought my surfboard to the surf station for a small repair on the nose of the board. It took them a week to get back to me and let me know my board was done. What they failed to let me know was the fact that I brought my board to them with minimal damage paid them to fix it and then they gave me back my board more damaged than when I got it. 3 massive gashes on the rail and no refund nothing the best that they could do for me is to fix it again and hopefully not damage it more. Horrible surf shop 0 integrity. If you want your board to come back more damaged than when you gave it to them and have them tell you to bad, this is the place for you. read more

The SurfStation is a true surf shop - not tee shirt shop that sells surf boards. The owner and the staff are knowledgeable about every aspect of surfing and can help you find the "right" board for you, which is what a true surf shop should do. You will find whatever you need for your surf adventures here. Not to mention a great fish taco in the parking lot.....but you can't buy gas here any more like you could in the 70's !! I've purchased items from the shop and I've also ordered from The SurfStation online and was very impressed with how easily and quickly the order went !! Board selection is second to none in northern Florida, and maybe the entire state of Florida. From short boards to longboards, you'll find the right board at The SurfStation!! read more

I had an amazing surf lesson with Blane at the Surf Station. My friend and I might have picked a cold time to take a lesson (back in December) however we had a blast and were even able to catch a few waves! Blane was a great surf instructor, all the way from explaining correct form and helping us into the waves. I will definitely be taking another lesson in the future and the employees were just the best! read more

History

Established in 1984.

Tory Strange opened the Surf Station in 1984, it was a surf shop and full service gas station. Gas was eliminated in 1995 and in 1998 a new focus on surf reporting began. In 1999 the first surf camp was established. We also have the Girl Next Door, a women's specific surf shop, and the Surf Station 2 in Crescent Beach, dedicated to used surfboards. We continue to expand and contribute to our website and surf report Surf-Station.com

Meet the Business Owner: Tory S.

Tory grew up surfing at the St. Augustine pier in the early 70s. He was a surf rat who hitch-hiked from beach to beach. He opened the Surf Station in 1984. He has two sons and loves them very much.

I don't know if it's because i'm brown, but I was watched like a hawk by the associates while older white guys were free to roam the store without harassment. I had two girls in close proximity to me at all times while I browsed. All items have a security tag on it so it doesn't make sense to be watched like that. I had two girls watching me as I returned from the fitting room and pulled out the pieces that I wanted. The women's fitting room is exposed to the public so husbands and male associates can directly see into the fitting room when you open the door and are in your underwear (asking for another size, or wanting a full-body view in a mirror). I had the pieces that i wanted in hand, but decided to get a different bottom. After spending $250 (I found the ONLY 3 sets in my D cup and Large size bottoms) I asked if i could look at the sun glasses at the register. The girls at the register said they'd keep my bag (that i just paid for) at the counter. I felt eyes on me and saw both girls at the counter staring at me while they checked out other people at the register. An older white guy was at the counter and the girl asked who helped him today he said "nobody." It was so creepy. I also paid full-price for frayed bikinis, and an over-reach of surveillance (even tho it's all tagged) just because they are the only shop in town with bikinis and i'm visiting. Just order cheaper sets online before your vacation here. Save yourself the humiliation and save on your budget. You could make some money if you want to document, and sue for racial profiling and harassment.

It's $2 to walk out on the pier ("Sightseeing", per the sign) but it's worth it. It's a beautiful view! Today was incredibly windy - so bad that I had trouble holding my binoculars in place while looking for birds. But I was able to log 9 bird species while there, just watching them fly by and/or on the beach. There are benches for sitting, but they did have the end of the pier blocked off. See other reviewers for speculation on why. There's also a pretty popular Farmer's Market that sets up every Wednesday in the parking lot in front of the pier. It's popular enough that we witnessed traffic bottleneck there, so be mindful of that.

You can book online and pick your start time and how many hours you'd like to go out on the boat. You also have the option of a captained or non-captained boat (but must have an experience driver with boat training). We opted for the 3 hour sunset cruise and it was perfect. We enjoyed a 20 min boat ride before anchoring at driftwood beach (island) and lounged around on the water mat. We made friends with some locals and had the perfect view of the sunset. As it got dark we rode around the coast and had a beautiful view of downtown St. Augustine at night. This was a perfect way to end day 2 of our Bach trip and I will definitely be booking again in the future for the Christmas light experience. Thanks so much!

It was glorious). The water was nice and cool. The beach was clean. It had some small shells, but not many. It was mostly free of seaweed and great for swimming. There are also more waves on the east coast of Florida than on the west coast. I expected them to be bigger than they were. However, once I was in the water I realized that they were mightier than they appeared. Some of those waves can knock you over! I may have swallowed a lot of salt on the day I was here. The waves were a lot of fun. We did get attacked by some bugs floating in the ocean as the sun set. I would recommend watching that from somewhere else. On this coast, the sunrise is more predominant anyhow. There is a pier on the beach that has some incredible views. It also is popular with fisherman. We came back and watched the sunrise on the pier the next day. It looks like there is normally a charge, but not if you are there early enough. It was no charge at 6am on the day we used it. The view was incredible. You can see the Lighthouse lit up from the pier too. We loved the beach in St. Augustine and we will definitely visit it the next time we are in town.
