I signed up my three children for lessons this past weekend; my children are 20, 18, & 13 (nearly 14). The care that was taken by the staff helped assure my children as they have never surfed before. They were taught safety & basic skills before even entering the water. Once in the water, they received corrections that helped two of my surfers to actually fully stand & ride for a bit. My 18 year old has a broken big toe, so finding balance was a bit harder for him. He was nearly up a few times. Following the session, they were taught to care for the equipment properly. We booked a second session immediately after the kids changed into their dry clothes. My daughter ended up being the only one of my crew to take the second lesson due to my oldest having sun poisoning (we left surf lessons and spent the remaining daylight on the beach). However, my daughter learned even more the second day. While they learned a lot in the 60 min session, I highly recommend 90 minutes for the first lesson. The value for the time was great! I'm sure classes are wonderful, but having a 1:3 or 1:1 ratio was so much better for my kids. The kids enjoyed it so much they want to come back again. Amazing customer service in the shop as well. Our Kids had the best time at Surf Camp with Jax Surf and Paddle staff !This is the 3rd year we have attended this camp and by far it was the best. My kids are 12, 9, and 6 and all of them had a good experience. It was well organized, the instructors were diligent and patient. They made sure even my 6 year old, who was unsure of surfing, had a great time. My husband and I even had the opportunity to book a private lesson through the shop. It was very reasonably priced. Our instructor, Connor, was absolutely fantastic! He was so patient and encouraging, with his instruction we were able to stand up on the board during our first lesson-incredible. I had an awesome 1-hr individual surf lesson with Matt! I had surfed a few times growing up but didn't really know what I was doing. Matt was a knowledgeable and patient teacher, knew how to read the waves and fix little things to help me stand up on waves and feel safe. Also had a lot of fun chilling at the Bodega later on with good drinks, friendly locals, and that beach atmosphere you can't find outside Florida. If I had been in Neptune Beach longer I would have tried more classes. read more

This is a very nice little surf and paddle board shop. The young lady working was very polite and helpful. She did say she had been working for ten hours straight and that she was tired. I loved the baby wall in the back. I also loved the benches outside the store. You can sit down and rest for a minute. Take a load off. Lol. They had items from little bags, to socks to bathings suits, shirts and a lot of other items for sale, I also noticed that they had a few full size tops, which pleases me. My friend had been dying to try stand up paddle boarding so when I saw a Living Social deal pop up a few months back we decided to grab it up and give it a shot. Having no idea what to expect, we showed up ready for something new on Sunday morning at 8:45am. They alternate between the class being held on the beach or at the Intracoastal waterway depending on the weather conditions. For our class it was going to be at the beach. They set us up with our boards and paddles and our group walked out to the beach to get ready for some instructions on what to do. I was a little unprepared for how heavy the boards would be, or the fact that we would be carrying them 2 blocks to the ocean, but other than that everything was pretty straight forward. The ladies that lead our group were very knowledgeable, patient and fun. While I'm not sure SUP is my thing, I did enjoy myself and would recommend this place to anyone looking to try it out. read more

Beginner surfer here - I had gone once before with a friend and was unsuccessful at getting up on the board, so I figured it was best to take a surf lesson. Reservation: this was pretty smooth - I called the day before to schedule a lesson and it went pretty straightforward. Heads up that they will charge you at the time of reservation (they took down my credit card information), which wasn't an issue for me. They were accommodating of my schedule (7 AM start for a 90-minute lesson), which was much appreciated! Arrival/Setup: I got to the shop at 7 AM and it was just Connor there. He lent me a rash guard for free, which was nice. We grabbed the boards (10-footer for me - I'm 6 feet tall) and walked less than 2 minutes to the beach. Lesson: we spent about 10 minutes on the sand practicing stand-up technique and then the remaining time in the water. Connor was great - lots of great tips and guidance on the three things that make you successful at standing up - balance along the center line, staying low, and having a wide stance. He was patient and was willing to share lots of tips on identifying/timing waves, balance, and all the nuances of surfing. We started in the deeper part of the water but moved closer to the beach to ride the whitewaters when I wasn't able to catch a wave. By the end of the lesson, I had rode probably 10-12 waves for 5-15 seconds each, so absolutely a solid lesson! Verdict: strongly recommend surf lessons here! read more

So, I tried learning how to surf on my own a few years ago. Found a secondhand surfboard on Craigslist for cheap, got a little bit of gear and felt like I was ready. Couldn't be that hard, right? Boy was I wrong. I flailed around in the water as waves came crashing over me, and not once did I stand up on the board. After a few more unsuccessful attempts, I figured this wasn't for me. Fast forward to summer 2016. My wife convinced me to take a surf lesson at Jax Surf and Paddle with her, and I'm really happy I did. She'd been raving about it as she'd done a lesson a few weeks earlier, and caught the surf bug. Our instructor, Mark, was kind enough to reschedule our lesson to a day with better conditions. We met up on a Saturday at 7am with decent waves, just north of the old Atlantic Beach pier. Mark had the boards ready and gave us a short and simple rundown of what to do. His solid instruction and laid-back personality made it a great experience. Mark had us paddle out just beyond the whitewater and gave us a little push as each wave approached. Within minutes, we were popping up on the foamies and riding the waves. The little pointers and bits of advice that he gave us were invaluable, and made the entire hour worthwhile. Almost half a year later, I'm constantly in the water and working on improving. I'm forever thankful to the crew at Jax Surf and Paddle (and my encouraging wife) for sparking my interest in surfing. The employees are friendly and the rates are pretty affordable (taking into consideration that private lessons of any kind are rarely "cheap"). Our instructor Emilia was patient, friendly, and enthusiastic. Though after 90 minutes I can't vouch to be a pro, I definitely enjoyed my lesson and will be back to rent some boards! While I had originally thought I was signing up for SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) lessons, I somehow ended up signing up for surf lessons. Being in an adventurous mood, I decided to keep my appointment and went anyway. For a fair price I got to spend an hour along with four other adventurous spirits in a quite choppy Atlantic trying to make my instructor proud and actually stand up on the board. It took me several attempts, but I actually did make it to standing upright a couple of times before the end of the lesson. The instructor - who's name fails me - was great. Personable & enthusiastic. She didn't push anyone too far out of their comfort zones but encouraged us the entire time with a smile. I will definitely be back as the weather warms up again. Jax Surf Camp - Awesome camp! This surf camp is amazing. My son (10 yr old) wanted to try surfing. We signed him up for the week and he had a blast and gained both surfing and safety skills. The camp is run so well, they provided the boards and rash gaurds, daily snacks and drinks for the half day session, sunscreen, etc. The kids are always kept safe and are well taken care of, they are all in very good hands. The instructors were so interactive with the kids and were great role models and instructors. I was at the beach during the camps with my other smaller children, and I was amazed at how much time all of the kids spent with the instructors, as well as all of the kids' enthusiasm. They didn't waste a minute, the camp had the kids in the water almost the whole time minus scheduled breaks, and my kid loved it. Best kids camp I've ever taken my kids too. I recently took a public beginner surf class with Jax surf and paddle and had a great time! This was my second lesson (first was elshwhere on vacation) and I did stand up. It might not have been pretty, but I stood and rode in waves! The staff was friendly, knew their stuff, and very encouraging out in the ocean. I've never had a yelp account until now, but my experience was back in August. It was on my boyfriend Kyle's bucket list to learn how to surf before his deployment to Iraq. I got us lessons which were reasonably priced, and we came down on a Wednesday to learn how to surf. We had the greatest time ever. The owner was our coach for the day, and we had a blast with him. He let us use the surfboards for the rest of the day. After the 90 minutes was over we felt like we had learned enough to stay out there on our own for a couple more hours. After our surf lesson we spoke with the owner for about 20 minutes, he recommended, if we have time, to go check out a place called Ginnie springs a couple hours away. We decided to be spontaneous and check it out, we ended up camping for three days out there! I am so appreciative of the memories I was able to make with Kyle before he left, and I owe most of them to this company and their employees! We will be moving to Georgia when he returns in May and will absolutely be coming back to Jax's surf and paddle! read more

I followed up 3 weeks later and they apologized for forgetting and said they were glad I called to remind them and they would email me within a few days with the shipping confirmation. Well, a week later still no contact. I had to call today and ask for my card to be reimbursed. At this point the manager said they contacted me. They didn't. She then said the product came in late, which is fine, these things happen, but just call your customer and let them know. We had a great experience and learned how to surf! This place exceeded our exceptions, and took such great care of us. We took a 90 min public surf lesson for our group of 7. Our family age range is from 7yrs old to 40yrs old and they were able to work with each of us and give us undivided attention. I booked a 2 hour private lesson for my 16 year old son and I. We had taken lessons from other places are were very impressed with our instructor, Emelia. She was great and provided a lot of helpful feedback, tips and pointers about how we could improve. We decided to book an additional lesson for the next day with Emelia because we learned so much on our first lesson. The second day with Emelia was even better because it allowed us to really refine what we learned the previous day. We recommend the private lessons and if possible to book multiple days.
