I cannot believe that I haven't review this place until now. I have been a regular customer even before Jay and Steve took over this place which was over 20+ years. I've brought my fifth car to Jay and Steve. Some were used and some were new. Jay has been the most honest mechanic I ever met and he really does take care of you and your car. We bring our cars for an inspection and oil change whenever we can ( We moved so we live far from his business.) since he inspect the cars so I can fix it before it gets major issue. We tried to use someone local but they told me one thing when Jay told me what I really needed. I really value his honesty and his skill as a mechanic. Let me tell you that he might not be the most friendliest person at first but he is really nice person once you get to know him. I tried not to be biased but I guess I am since I drive an hour to bring my cars to him. I recommend him if you want a mechanic who is honest and good at what he does. read more

One of my biggest stressors in life is finding a good doctor and finding a good mechanic. I'm so thankful that I was able to tackle one of those problems. This place is an absolute treasure. I spoke to the owner about a sound I was concerned about coming from my car. He was able to take me in the same day! He offered to take a look at the car which took about 10 minutes. Afterwards, he explained to me that the issue doesn't affect the functionality of the car and if I want to get it fixed, I could but it's not necessary. I really appreciated the honesty and transparency as I would have trusted him even if he told me it was a major repair issue and would've paid for it anyways. I know that I can come to this place alone with my car and not fear getting ripped off because I'm a woman. The review is long overdue but I initially found this place on Yelp and I decided to check this place out. The first time I went, I brought my husband along because I never want to go to garage without a man because many years ago a garage tried to rip me off so I have learned from experience not to go alone. This was before Yelp existed and I'm so glad it exists now because I would have not known about this place. I met the owner who was there and he seems like a decent human being and my husband also thinks so and he's a good judge of character more than I'll ever be. He was straight into the point and told me what was wrong and how much it cost and he didn't try to push anything on me or try to upsell anything on me, and they had the car fixed a lot faster than I expected. Not that I was going to complain if I had to wait because it is a car, but they gave me an estimated time and they actually called me earlier then the estimated time to let me know it was done. Needless to say I returned to have my car checked up, I had to return alone this time and I was still nervous ever since that other garage tried to rip me off many years ago. But the owner was there and he was really nice about everything and also told me how I would be needing new tires. He never try to rush me or make it sound like it was the complete end of the world if I didn't buy the tires RIGHT AT THAT MOMENT. I ended up buying the tires anyway because I was going on a long trip and again the service was faster than I expected. I was also pleasantly surprised one day because before I brought the car into the shop I didn't have any more windshield wiper fluid and when I went to fill it up, it was actually full and they had secretly refilled it for me and I had no idea. I'll be very blunt, been a long time regular customer here at this garage. From time to time due to circumstances have used other places over the years (out of state on the road etc.) and nobody beats the Pit. You don't have to be an auto hobbyist like me to gauge this, they do a great job of diagnosing the problem and fixing it. Parts they get are OEM equivalent and if you want or have to get dealer parts, they don't do a crazy mark up. Labor rates are fair and honest from these guys. I used to religiously go to the dealership back before my Pit days. Didn't think the quality of work would be worth if the non manufacturer certified guys charged a lot (had some bad ones I've run across over the years, and thankfully most of them went out of business.) Back to that point they've been around a long time and do great work. Steve is a walking Car database. Jae is super dude too. Some of the staff have turned over the years but the work has still been great results. Never made me do something I didn't need to even when they could. Integrity in your mechanic, that's something you don't find most shops. So bout time I gave them a review they deserve the recognition. Support your local mechanic! read more

Called a few days before and found they don't do appointments which is in my favor. I came in as soon as they opened so I was the first. I cant speak much about how crowded it gets after that. So it looks like your typical mechanic's garage. I asked the mechanic if he can check a few things out on my car. Long story short, he took his time to check everything in detail and the one thing he didn't check said it was risky to fix and would have cost $400-$500. Overall even after checking everything, I wasn't swindled into buying and or to prematurely replace anything. All I ended up getting was an oil change and he even let me used my own oil filter without complaint or extra charge. Second time around here and looks like this place will be my TO-GO spot for my Astro Van. First time I went, they changed my tires. Years later, I decided to go back and this time I had them swap out my old Wheels/Rims for new ones. They even went out of their way to get the proper lug nuts for safety! They didn't just slap the old improper ones back on and called it a day. I was going from STEEL RIMS to ALLOY RIMS so the lug nuts are different. They did such a great job, I highly recommend them! Picking out your go-to garage is like picking out a strip club; the shadier the better. Pit Stop Garage is a shady looking shack on the corner of Murder St and Rape Ln. I've been here for general inspections, state inspections, and whatever potential problem my paranoid brain could think of. You don't need to wait long for service here, unless you come on the first weekend of the month. They are honest and to the point. Other garages were ready to tell me how imminent my doom is if I don't cough up 500 bucks to fix every scratch on my car, but the guys here will give you a humanly reasonable analysis. They could have gotten a lot of money from me poaching my paranoia but so far, it has only been a few oil changes and recommendations on future checkup times. read more

Best place for ALL your car needs. I've been going to this location for 20 years. First when it was John's Auto Body and then when John left, I felt no need to change and worked with Jay and Steve. Now honestly for the first few years, it was just inspection once a year, oil change 3000 miles and a tune up and routine maintenance. But then I got a company car (2003 PT Cruiser) with a dashboard that lights up like the Times Square on NYE with problems. Every time I drive in, Jay and Steve are courteous, nice, professional and honest. They quote you a fair and reasonable price and If the cost is ever more than what they quoted, they'll call you before they start anything. If its more cost effective to go down to Citi Field, they will advise you to do that too!! ( uh yeah I'll take that $50 rim and tire at Citi Field than $200 for a new one Thank you!!!) They know I have a company card and that I can charge whatever work I want but they have never suggested I fix anything other than what I need. This garage totally saved the day! I was forty weeks pregnant (due any day) when the driver's side window came off its track and wouldn't close. If we couldn't get it fixed before I went into labor, we would have to take an Uber from Queens into Manhattan, and with my history of fast labors, I was worried I would have the baby in the back of a strange car! I walked in to get ask about a possible repair to my Hyundai. The manager saw me walk in (NO Greeting) and continued to walk around with the phone to his ear. After asking others who was in charge. The manager finally decided he could be bothered. Only to completely blow me off. "We don't do this type of work" But if we did. It would cost $2,500 -$3,000! Since I found these guys thru Yelp, it's only fair I add to their reviews. Came in for the annual NY inspection and oil change. They found an issue with my brakes and explained several possibilities and options - the worse of which would have required a return trip to replace the entire caliper. Nonetheless, they took the time to inspect the various parts (I was watching them and they had no issues showing me what they were doing) and eventually concluded that a simple brake pad replacement should fix it. From chatting with Steve, they are a very honest business and mainly rely on word-of-mouth for their customers, so I'm pretty certain they're not out to gouge anyone.
