I'll admit, I was a little nervous coming in after reading some of the lower-rated reviews. A few of them were pretty harsh. Of course, every restaurant can have a bad night, but after reading them, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Our experience was anything but disappointing. We started with the steamed oysters, and as someone who has played oyster roulette and lost one too many times, I was thrilled to see fresh steamed oysters on the menu. They were delicious, perfectly prepared, and honestly had already altered my mood before the rest of the meal even arrived. And then there was the view. Spectacular. I kept looking around thinking what a privilege it was to sit down to dinner somewhere so genuinely beautiful. We ordered a cup of clam chowder to split because we'd heard it heralded as some of the best, and it absolutely lived up to the praise. Buttery, flavorful, not too thick and not too thin. Just really, really good chowder. For dinner, I had the ribeye topped with crab meat, and my date had the wild salmon. Both came with the most incredible creamy mashed potatoes and a salad. Even the salad service impressed me: chilled plates AND chilled forks. Such a small, thoughtful detail, but it immediately told me how much care goes into the dining experience here. My steak was phenomenal. The fat was rendered beautifully, the steak itself was cooked perfectly, and the crab on top made it feel completely indulgent. The salmon was equally delicious. Not a bite survived. We absolutely did not need dessert. And then our waitress brought out a massive tray of house-made desserts. Cheesecakes. Tortes. Crème brûlées. An entire parade of poor decision-making staring us directly in the face. So naturally, we took two desserts to go. We knew we'd regret it if we didn't. I also have to mention the service. Our waitress was absolutely incredible and, along with just one other server, was holding down the entire dining room. Despite how busy they were, the service was warm, attentive, friendly, and never felt rushed. A fabulous meal, genuinely wonderful service, thoughtful little touches throughout, and a view that is very hard to beat. Whatever experience led to some of those harsher reviews, it certainly wasn't the experience we had tonight. This wasn't just dinner. It felt special. We will absolutely be back. read more

I first visited Pirate's Cove back in 2011-2012 and still dream about their coconut French toast -- easily one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. So on a recent trip I was excited to come back. Heads up: their hours online don't always match what's posted on the building, and it seems they open when they're ready. We were lucky they opened at 12, but they weren't serving breakfast anymore (sadly, no coconut French toast this time). That said, the food we did get was delicious. The house clam chowder was light, not overly thick, with good potato and clam chunks -- definitely house-made. I ordered the salmon club and it was outstanding: smoky bacon, fresh salmon, tangy tartar sauce with a hint of BBQ, and all layered into a triple-stacked club sandwich. A little messy, but absolutely worth it. Overall, I was disappointed not to find breakfast, but the seafood dishes made up for it. If you're coming, don't count on breakfast hours -- but do try the salmon club or chowder. read more

I hated to do this since I have had great experiences in the past. That said a recent meal here was highly disappointing and very costly. 2 stars are for our waitress (she deserves more-Service was good). Food awful, overcooked, tasteless. I'm thinking they changed chefs or possibly their vendors? Steaks completely overcooked (ordered medium), bread very dry, soup lacking nearly any broth, onions on steak chopped and raw (not sauté). Prawns deep fried and tasted as if were out of a box. Drinks were tasteless, literally watered down. Luke warm even. $100.00+ was spent on 2 deserts to go (good), 2 drinks, 1 calamari (also undercooked and flavorless)...charged us for the complimentary bread. They offered to remake the steaks; at which time we were done with the experience. They did remove those (steaks) from the bill. Won't be going back. read more

Pirate's Cove was a supreme breakfast establishment. There is an almost nostalgic feeling the moment you walk in the door. It screamed Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve, or Kellerman Resort (Dirty Dancing) with the wood paneling, historic photos and memorabilia on the walls. The booths/tables are large and spacious. The view is Pacific Northwest perfection. We spent a large chunk of our breakfast watching boats, people fishing, and crabbing. It did take a moment to be acknowledged or seated, but it is worth the wait. I think they only had one very sweet host, and she was also taking orders, and running food. I ordered the coconut french toast (half order), and a side of the crispiest bacon. I also order crispy bacon, but rarely does a location truly get it right. There tends to be floppy flaccid parts, and flaccid is never a preference, especially when it comes to crispy bacon. This bacon was crisped to perfection. The french toast was very good, but quite sweet. I couldn't have handled more than a half order. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak, with a side of biscuits and gravy. He annihilated his. We appreciated all that Pirate's Cove had to offer, and will return should we find ourselves in the Rockaway/Garibalidi area. read more

I spent one day on the coast and wanted badly to eat good seafood and this was incredibly disappointing. They didn't have oysters and no fresh or local seafood. Big Booo from me. Driving along the Oregon Coast on the way back to Seattle, we were looking for a nice spot to have lunch, past Tilamook, we ended up at Pirate's Cove. First off, Holly's welcoming smile and cheerfulness was very warm. We were not too hungry so we just had clam chowder and split a shrimp with melted Tilamook cheese on sourdough. That is all good but Holly brought out the dessert tray and we ordered this lemon blueberry cheesecake which was something that will be hard to forget. So delicious! I have passed Pirate's Cove often. The location and view seem great from the outside. Good parking spaces. And one rainy night I decided to stop by quite famished. Extensive seafood menu. BUT... However...when the rest came, it was such a let down :(( LUKEWARM food almost cold.... - Watery oyster soup that needed much more seasoning and more creaminess to it. - So underwhelming crab cake entree with one small cold baked potato. The butter I put on didn't even melt! The crab cakes were the worst I have ever had. They were cooked with OLD OIL used way too many times so the smell was just awful. Bread, yes, bread is one of the key ingredients. The menu is mostly seafood, and it even has a large section dedicated to Halibut. I had the Blackened Halibut, a 6 oz filet prepared beautifully. It could have heen a little spicier, however. I got a side of Garlic Cream Cheese mashed potatoes and it came with a small amount of fresh fruit. The wife had the Halibut with Crab, and it included a decent amount of crab, and was also very good. We split a Cheesecake and Berries dessert, which was rxcellent and WAS BIG ENOUGH FOR FOUR PEOPLE! We loved the environment. It felt like we were eating in a seasoned seafood house and we were! Clam chowder was delicious! I ordered the oriental sauté and it was huge and tasty! (Pictured here!) we also had shrimp Alfredo, crab melt, and crab cakes at our table. Not one complaint! Our server Trellis did a great job taking care of us and it was nice to have a little southern hospitality to make us feel at home. She brought out this amazing dessert tray. We were looking for a burger joint after eating seafood for 4 days straight but this place was overlooking the bay with big windows. I am glad that we decided to stop because the food was excellent. My husband had more seafood, shrimp cocktail, and the chowder bowl. I had the burger, which came with a really nice salad. They make all of their own dressing, etc. They have a huge dessert menu. I've read other reviews demeaning the food, the service and the ambience here. This isn't Michelin star dining, but it is good, fresh seafood. The decor isn't fancy, but who needs it when you have a view of the bay at sunset? We were greeted promptly by our server who was witty and friendly and very efficient. The menu offered a list of fresh items and we ordered from it. I ordered almond crusted halibut and a cup of clam chowder. Other reviewers complained that the chowder is too thin. I think that's a matter of preference. This chowder was tasty and just the right consistency for me. (Some people like their chowder more like wallpaper paste.) The halibut was tender and the crust just right. I ordered the Mario berry cobbler for dessert. (When in Oregon...) Plan to share it. It's delicious but built for two! If you love seafood, you'll enjoy Pirate's Cove. And, as for price, yes it's a bit high. Consider that you're getting a specialty food, that you're not paying sales tax, but that the owner has to pass along income taxes and property taxes to customers.. or go out of business. Property values on the coast are soaring. Owners have to pay qualified staff. We prepared food in our condo for breakfasts and one dinner so we could splurge at Pirate's Cove. Yummy roadside restaurant. Not a lot to look at but oh my goodness, inside was a completely gourmet restaurant with fantastic service! Waited 10 min on a dark and rainy night so missed the view right on the bay but found ourselves in a big comfy booth for date night. Unlike other expensive restaurants the portions were hearty and substantial. It's spendy but worth it! Standout was the steamer clams with the unique and flavorful broth made with porter, bacon, garlic and butter. It was amazing! Just get them, you'll thank me later. We split an order of the fried Razor clams. Local, fresh and perfectly cooked and served with mashed potatoes. They were among the best I've had. Sad we were too full for the dessert tray but they looked amazing...next time! So glad we took the recommendation from our front desk person at the hotel. read more

Listen... coming from someone who works in the service industry, I have to say that this might have been one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. Michelle was our waitress and she was very short and quiet with my friend and I. We are from out of town and wanted to try some local food. And everyone in town has been very kind and warm welcoming! But when we first walked in there was no "Hello", just a woman who said "two?" Then turned her back and walked us to a table... i didn't think much of it at first. Then Michelle, our serve wasn't very hospitable with us either. She was quiet with us for some reason and it made us very uncomfortable. But she was engaging with other tables which made my friend and I question did we do something wrong? We use our manners, maintain eye contact, smile but we did not get that in return. And that sucks when you go out and the server makes you feel that way. And on top of it I was also NOT impressed with the food either. Which sucks because of the prices and I understand inflation and what not, but I'm just overall unimpressed. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE ! The calamari was not that great, it was not cooked correctly. Also why are my crab legs taken out of the shell? That made me feel like they weren't fresh. We are by the ocean!! Waitress was very friendly. Menu varied. Meal was disappointing. Plated nice but portions were small. I got halibut and chips with a clam chowder appetizer. The clam chowder was watered down and the portion small and watery little ingredients traditionally found making clam chowder more like a consumme.... Halibut may not have been fresh but were three very small tidbits vs actual pieces of fish and very few French fries were provided. I almost said something, but didn't. Even the tatar sauce was watery...for $23.00...it was not worth the setting or service offered. I won't be going back soon.
