The business owner Erica gave me detailed and competitive quotes at the beginning. Saved me time and effort from bargaining. During the whole project, she was quick responding, followed every steps and organized the whole team well. I tend to keep adding or deleting terms in the middle of the projects and she was patient and understandable. The painter Daniel is an reliable expert. He made sure the working areas were well sealed before painting so after it was done my house was still clean. He touched up all the very minor parts I feel imperfect without complaining. His partner "Menu" is also a good guy and did me favors like moving my furnitures. My hardwood floors were installed by Mr. Wu and Yao. They have decades of experience in this field. Since we speak the same first language, we get along with each other well and I really learned a lot from watching and talking to them. They worked methodically and pretty fast. My second floor is uneven and I insisted nailing down my 7.5 inches planks rather than gluing down. They did their best prepare the subfloors and the final performance is super. When you step heavily on it, the rattling sound spots are little, way beyond my expectations. Btw, I didn't experience any 'bullying' or hidden costs. We hired Derick to remodel our rental home. Quotes, negotiations, and initial walkthroughs all went…read moregreat. He is extremely responsive and easy to work out details with. We appreciate that Derick is reliable and stands by his work. Working with D&E could have easily been 5 stars - pricing and communication are excellent. However, the on site manager for a few main phases of construction marred our experience. Mr. Miao led the external and internal painting of the house and did not do a good job. In addition, he was verbally aggressive (tried to bully us into doing more work), ethically questionable (wanted us to go around Derick for some materials), dismissive (or just fails to listen), and a chain smoker (but he didn't smoke inside the house). Externally, we needed the walls washed, patched, and painted. This was covered multiple times during our conversations with Derick. On the day of external painting, they washed and painted. It wasn't until we complained about the lack of patching that they went back to patch and paint again. Internally, we had three paint issues. In large areas, like the ceiling, the paint layers are uneven and in certain light, you can clearly see the uneven paint. Second, despite Derick reminding Mr. Miao that we wanted the same color walls in the kitchen as the rest of the house, he still painted it the original color. Lastly, he painted the water-based paint directly over the old oil-based paint in the bathrooms, doors, and kitchen. This resulted in peeling before the job was even over. To top it off, we added canned lights to the kitchen. The electrician had reminded Mr. Miao of this, but when Mr. Miao framed the kitchen ceiling, he placed the 2x4's where the electrician wanted the lights. The electrician didn't find out until after he opened the ceiling and then had to open up additional holes in the new ceiling to add his lights. The holes were patched up, but it's aggravating to put unnecessary holes in your new ceiling and have new the lights asymmetrically aligned. On the positive note, the job finished just a few days after the original schedule date. The delay was due to the Lunar New Year holiday weekend (and the workers took NYE off, too) and window installation was a few days late. Once they arrived, though, the doors and windows were installed quickly and cleanly. If you choose to work with D&E, make sure you don't work with Mr. Miao. Other than that, you're in good hands. For all the issues we've encountered, Derick had them fixed and has promised to correct any issues that arise.

Ed took our kitchen dimensions and design ideas and provided us with a clear layout, complete with detailed elevation drawings and 3D renderings. I simply abhor having to pen a negative review about a business and it's owner that we had chosen…read moreto trust to act for our expressed benefit. However, if a single person takes the requisite time to read this review and heeds to what I am about to delineate, the value of this review will have served it's designed intent. First and foremost, if you should decide to go with Rustico Renovations, GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING (down to the smallest detail) because, even if David promises you a something (an anything), if it is not in writing, he will claim that his promises were "never part of the contractual deal." In brief, you're screwed! if he asks you to trust him--DON'T!!! His spoken words appear as empty and meaningless as the promises he crafts out of them. David is charming. There is no question about that, but he is a TOTAL shill, dripping with pleasantries and "trust me's" and way many "group hugs" to boot. As aforementioned, get every little detail in writing, because David appears incapable of rising to the crown of his spoken word. A few examples? Oh sure--why not? David promised (in word, not in writing) that our new baseboards would be painted by the subcontractor before they were installed. Not only did I end up having to paint them, in order to move the project along, he charged us for the work I performed, and we had to pay for the paint. The same held true for the wall one of his subcontractors repaired and was supposedly "paid" to paint. Once again, in order to move the project forward, I ended up painting both the wall and the trim, and we had to buy all the paint. Yet, he still charged us for both the paint and my labor. His original "spoken" promise was that of assuring us that the project would only take a week. But then, it got pushed into 2 weeks, due to his mis-measurements and mis-calculations which, once again, we were led to have to pay for. The reason why I ended up painting the baseboards, the better portion of the repair that was repaired and the trim was simply because I did not want his "promise" of 1 week to stretch into 3 weeks, where our project appeared to be heading. When one of his subcontractors discovered a leak behind our pedestal sink, he and I made a deal for him to return back and resolve the problem for $150.00. When David got wind of "our deal", even though it was NEVER a part of the original contract, he not only called up this subcontractor and act to ream his ____, but had the audacity to call me up and demand that I go through him for EVERYTHING. Apparently, David not only thinks he owns his subcontractors, but his customers. Moreover, David ended up charging us 2X's the amount for the repair of the leak and an additional $325.00 to repair the flushing mechanism on our toilet. (We could have purchased a brand new toilet for what he charged us). it is a truly sad tale that you have to go through Rustico Renovations to get at the subcontractors, because their workmanship was rather brilliant. Okay . . . There did appear a few glitches and some inconveniences here-n'-there but, as aforementioned, their workmanship was spot on. Reiterating: Get everything in writing (to the detail). Expect delays. Expect to pay more for David's inability to take proper measurements or live up to his spoken word. If there is a something extra you discover you want fixed or repaired, once you project is set in motion, find a handyman to take care of it at a reasonable cost. Otherwise, you will pay waaaaay more than what the repairs are actually worth. And, good luck with your project!

This time, the challenge is to replace the carpeted stairway with hardwood to match the stairs with the rest of the home that already has hardwood floor. And, like last time, Daniel's team went above and beyond to ensure the project was on time (finished it in two days!) and with top notch quality. Our floor vendor screwed up and told us to order fewer stair nose pieces than we actually needed. Daniel's team took the initiative to create the stair nose out of our spare floor planks to finish the project on time and actually ended up saving us some money on that.
